The Space I'm In: Integrating Installation Art with Academics

What: The Mattress Factory Museum & IU1 are offering grant funded professional development opportunity for 20 teachers (10 schools, 2 teachers per school, with 1 visual artist as a team member) which will include:• three professional development workshops to be held at both IU1 and at the Mattress Factory museum in Pittsburgh (funding for substitutes will be provided) • the use of the museum’s The Space I’m In resource kit to explore elements of installation art in your school• admission tickets and bus costs for two classes of students from each participating school to visit the Mattress Factory museum in Pittsburgh during the project• access to an interactive on-line wiki space for the creation and sharing of lesson plans with other project participants• one (1) CPE course credit will be awarded to participants who complete the three workshops

For Whom? This opportunity is available for 10 schools from Washington, Fayette and Greene Counties to focus on contemporary installation art as a medium and The Space I’m In, as a curriculum tool. Participants will engage in hands-on, collaborative, experience-based learning as they develop lesson plans that incorporate art instruction with other academic subjects.

The Space I’m In is a collection of learning resources for teachers and students to help users explore their environments with a wide range of technologies and approaches. The use of the resources in this project will address human experience to the world around us by creating connections between our memories, sensory understanding, and physical spaces, while addressing critical curricular issues in the classroom.

This is a thirty-hour, one-credit CPE course.
