Dear friends at St. Louise, Our culture places a high value on the rights of the individual. But the rights of each person need to be balanced with the common good. The Church too ascribes a high value, even a sacredness, to each person, since each is created in God’s image; and the Church holds as sacred both the well-formed conscience of the individual and the common good. As people of faith we see that the individual and communal human search for what is true and good is ultimately a search for God, who is truth and goodness itself. The word “conscience” has Latin roots and means “knowing together." For people of faith, this means that we seek to “know together” the divine law of love that is written on the human heart, to hear the Holy Spirit speaking with the “inner voice” to guide the daily choices that we make. We are challenged to use our conscience to make moral choices with a “true conscience” and to avoid an “erroneous conscience." A true conscience is informed by the truth that is beyond oneself. A false conscience is one that operates with the individual as the reference for moral decision-making. Three primary limitations can lead us to operate with an “erroneous conscience”: · ignorance; · thoughtlessness; and · an actual decision to substitute the false conscience, of the

sovereign rule of self, for the true conscience that refers to an ultimate truth. (“My truth is as good as your truth” and “There is no morally binding truth beyond ourselves.”)

Christians through the centuries have looked to God and the teachings of Jesus, God’s Son, as the ultimate authority for moral -decision making. How can we know what God is saying to us? Bible-based churches see the Bible, the holy scriptures, as all the teaching humans need; in these churches the ultimate authority for determining the message of truth usually rests on the interpretation of the Bible by a single preacher. Numerous “mainline” churches (the historic, established Protestant denominations) look not solely to the Bible, but also to the teachings of the early Church Fathers (Saints Augustine, Ignatius of Antioch, Origen, etc.). St. John Henry Newman was first drawn to the Anglican Church because he saw that the writings of the early Church Fathers offered a profound and ancient wisdom to interpret the scriptures, and so had a more universal view than the Evangelical churches to which he was initially attracted. He later noticed, however, that most of these churches were too closely tied to a country or culture where they were founded, which also places limits on universal understanding. His search for universal truth was satisfied in the Catholic Church because its teaching was “universal” – that is to say, a faith for every time, place and people.

Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 9...

...Fr. Gary’s article continued For that same reason, when Catholics search for the truth to inform our conscience, we look to the scriptures as the basis of our teaching, the Early Church Fathers for their ancient wisdom for interpreting the scrip-tures, and the teaching magisterium of the Church which, as teacher, helps us to apply God’s revelation to the questions of today. Once a person has informed their “true conscience” with study, prayer, and proper consultation, then their individual choice in accordance with that conscience is sacred. It is possible, except in the rare cases where something can never be morally justified (for instance, terrorism, racism or abortion), that two people exercising their “true conscience” may come to different conclusions (for instance, voting for a particular politi-cal party or candidate). One of the ways in which Pope Francis encourages us, when we face difficult moral choices in our pluralistic age, is his use of the word “accompaniment.” He reminds us that we are meant to accompany one another. Jesus is the one who first accompanies us, always looking at who we are in the depth of our hearts. He invites us to walk with him, to look to him for guidance to know what is true, good and beautiful. We look to him not just as individuals, but as a community, as the Church. The mystery of the Church is not one-dimensional. Yes, we are the Church – and the Church is also our mother, our teacher. As a loving mother, the Church does not impose her teaching on society or individuals, but proposes to all the vision of the Gospel. Faithful Catholics look to the hard teachings not with disdain, but with respect and the true desire to be faithful even when we disagree or find the teaching difficult to live out. I invite you to go deeper. Bishop Robert Barron has an eight-minute message on Conscience and Morality which you can view at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYvbgOTGm7g. Blessings to all! Fr. Gary Zender p.s. Next week's article will discuss the Theology of the Body.
