Wall Street. A mob of PROTESTERS has blocked a massive intersection. MUDDLED CHANTS blend in to one another. SIGNS. CAR HORNS. POLICE out in full riot gear.

INT. HOUSE - GARAGE - SAME (PAST)

A car engine hums as dense fumes fill the closed space.

And, as we slowly move forward, the fumes part to give us the window shield of a family sedan. Windows down just a sliver.

    2.

  • A BLOND FEMALE (40s) the driver and TWO YOUNG GIRLS (8 & 10) in the back seat. All lifelessly passed out.

    FADE TO BLACK.

    GUNSHOT.

    EXT. WASHINGTON D.C. - DAY

The Capital. The PROTESTERS have swarmed the congressional steps. CHANTS. SIGNS. The whole nine.

In the center of all this madness is a FEMALE REPORTER (30s) interviewing an ex-CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN (40s). Both have to almost shout to get above the noise.

FEMALE REPORTERTwo years into the movement and many are saying everyone out here should stop what theyre doing and get a job. Whats your response to that?

CONSTRUCTION FOREMANWhat jobs? You gotta be kiddinme, right?

    An ex-RESTAURANT MANAGER (30s).

RESTAURANT MANAGERThey want us to put our families in one-bedroom apartments instead of homes. Its ridiculous.

    A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER (40s).

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERThey want us to be happy with as little as possible while they drink from golden sinks.

    An ex-COMPUTER ENGINEER (30s).

COMPUTER ENGINEERThey ship our jobs overseas then tell us to go out and get one. Where?

    An ex-RETAIL MANAGER (40s).

RETAIL MANAGEREven the jobs were creating dont pay enough to support a family.

    3.

  • A UNIVERSITY STUDENT.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTThats why were out here. Thats what this movement is about. About this country getting hijacked and someone needing to take it back. And, trust me, thats going to happen.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - LATER

The CHANTS continue. Leading the way, KEVIN SIMS (40s), pure liberal, passionate/fanatical.

KEVINPass the bill! Pass the bill! Give us back our homes!

MALE REPORTER (O.S.)The crowd here is tenacious, Sam.They know this housing bill is coming up for a vote and they intend to do whatever they can to influence the outcome.

    INT. MODERN CONDO - DUSK

Hard edges and cold colors accent a stuffy DC cocktail party in full swing. SUITS. MINI-SKIRTS. BOW TIE SERVERS. SOCIALITES. CONGRESSMEN/WOMEN.

INT. MODERN CONDO - BATHROOM - SAME

The hard edges continue as we round a corner to see NICHOLAS MOORE (40s), staunch Republican lobbyist and MELISSA (late 20s), tearing each others clothes off.

She pulls his jacket back, loosens his solid red tie. He grips her tight, kissing her neck. She holds down in one area of the jacket pockets for a second, then releases. Grabs his belt and rips it off.

She takes his hand and caresses his WEDDING RING as he hikes up her mini-skirt.

INT. MODERN CONDO - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas moves through the party, adjusting his suit jacket and pants. Snatches a scotch from a SERVERS tray. Nods and winks to a few GUESTS along the way. Clearly his element.

    GUESTS (O.S.)Nick! Nick!

    4.

  • INT. MODERN CONDO - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas catches the gaze of JACK ERICKSON (50s), CONGRESSIONAL MAJORITY WHIP, speaking with a fellow CONGRESSMAN in the corner.

Jack excuses himself and approaches. A glass of wine in-hand and a perpetual suspicion in his eye.

They smile and fake shake as Jack leans in.

JACKSometimes I think this is the only thing you do - all day, every day.

NICHOLASGets you off the hill, Congressman.

JACKSo, you can remain on yours.

Nicholas chuckles. Nailed. Mild tension between the two.

NICHOLASYou know this bill cant pass, Jack.

    JACKWhy is that?

NICHOLASOh, let me count the ways.

JACKIf you start naming your clients--

NICHOLASLook, this is middle-class welfare and you know it. Pandoras box doesnt have a lid.

JACKIs that a direct quote from the banks?

Nicholas stalls and passes off a few winks and smiles to those around.

    NICHOLASIs it stuffy in here?

    5.

  • INT. MODERN CONDO - LATER

Nicholas and Jack move through. Pass a young Hispanic CONGRESSMAN. Nicholas pats him on the shoulder and addresses the group around him.

NICHOLASThis man will be President some day. Mark my words.

Everyone in the group DC smiles and chuckles.

HISPANIC CONGRESSMANThanks, Nick. Ill hold you to it.

INT. MODERN CONDO - STAIRS - NIGHT

Nicholas and Jack make their way down.

JACKThat ass will never be President.

NICHOLASBut, he has the Hispanic vote.

    Nicholas grins.

    CONGRESSMAN MILLS (O.S.)Nick? Nick?

Nicholas stops and turns back. CONGRESSMAN MILLS (50s), trying to be cool, but the toupee doesnt help.

CONGRESSMAN MILLS (CONTD)Ive been trying to get a meeting with you.

    NICHOLASCall my assistant, Melissa.

CONGRESSMAN MILLSIve tried. Is she here?

NICHOLASI dont know. Havent seen her.

    EXT. MODERN CONDO - NIGHT

The doors open and a flood of noise permeates the previously quiet air. The buzz of a DC night in full swing. Monuments in the distance glow.

    6.

  • EXT. DC PARK - NIGHT

The motion of a DC night swirls around them.

Nicholas and Jack weave in between random K STREETERS.

NICHOLASTheyll fight this with everything theyve got, Jack. You need to know that.

JACKI dont care about the banks, Nick. We already gave them their check.

NICHOLASYou gave them a lifeline, and theyre back, and bigger than ever.

    JACKSo, why do they care?

NICHOLASIts billions of dollars, why do you think?

JACKI think getting payments down to what the house is actually worth, instead of three times that, isnt an insane notion.

NICHOLASI dont sign things I cant handle, so I wouldnt know.

JACKSo, when the bank makes a bad investment, bail them out and when the middle-class does--

    NICHOLASThe middle-class doesnt create jobs.

Jack abruptly stops and gets close.

JACKDont be disingenuous. Im not one of your lobbying lackeys eating out of your dirty hands. You know I see the reports. Larger bonuses- bigger houses-faster cars.

    7.

  • They arent creating jobs, Nick, theyre giving their money to people who are already in their tax bracket.

NICHOLASThis bill is cancer and you know it. And, Im not talking you have two months to live cancer. Im talking you have all the golden years you want, in utter fuckingagony the whole way. Slowly watching your grave being dug one pretentious Congressman at a time as the talking points for re-election campaigns fill the air.

Jack stares out at the night, a rock and a hard place would be a softer position at present.

Nicholas pats him on the shoulder and leans in.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)You want to be on my side, Jack.

(measured beat)But, I dont need to tell you that.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - NIGHT

Nicholas jogs up the congressional steps.

INT. TOM CAINS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - NIGHT

Nicholas, scotch in-hand, sits across from DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN TOM CAIN (50s), the peacemaker - vodka, blue tie.

TOMThe middle-class is looking for a fighter, Nick.

NICHOLASI agree, Congressman. And, were going to make sure thats you. We just feel something may be a bit better down the line.

    TOMSuch as?

NICHOLASWhy not have the President issue a quarterly moratorium? Give people a three month cushion.

    (beat)

    8.

    JACK (CONT'D)

  • Three months to save, three months to pay. No penalty.

    Tom contemplates the offer.

    TOMYou think thats long-term?

    NICHOLAS(no)

    I think its fair.

    TOMWhat do the banks think?

    NICHOLAS(theyll slaughter you)

    Theyre willing to talk.

Tom stares back, understanding the underlying.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)All they want is something fair, Tom. Fairness for everyone. Thats all. We make that happen, everyone is happy. Everyone is happy, everyone gets re-elected.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - NIGHT

Nicholas speeds across the freeway in his sporty AMG. A contact high from his dealings. His cell BUZZES and he answers it through his speakers.

    NICHOLASJohn, what do you got?

    JOHN (V.O.)A flat tire.

    NICHOLASIm alone.

    JOHN (V.O.)We have a situation.

NICHOLASIf this is Victoria again, tell her to fuck off.

    JOHN (V.O.)Its not your wife.

    9.

    NICHOLAS (CONT'D)

  • NICHOLASEx-wife. Then what is it?

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Looks like a model home. Dark leather everything. Mood lighting. All the finer things that DC money can buy. They may sit around without use, but they sure look good.

Nicholas paces next to the couch. The leader of his SECURITY TEAM, JOHN (40s), solid, a comfortable distance away. Next to ROSA, the Hispanic nanny, whos in complete disbelief.

JOHNThere was a fire drill near the end of the school day. Rosa says when it finished she didnt come out.

    NICHOLAS(tempered irritation)

    Jesus Christ.

ROSAIm so sorry, sir. Im so sorry.

Nicholas shoots a glare at Rosa.

    NICHOLASDid you try her cell?

JOHNA few times. Straight to voicemail.

    Nicholas nods.

JOHN (CONTD)We tried to call you earlier, but your phone was off.

    NICHOLAS(guilty reflex)

    My phones never off.

He moves to his jacket, that lies on a rack, grabs his phone from his pocket and sure enough, its off. Confused, he turns it back on.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)I was busy. Did you call Victoria?

    JOHNShe didnt pick up either.

    10.

  • NICHOLASThis is her. Shes pissed I pushed for full custody. Did you talk to anyone else?

JOHNWe called a few of her friends to see if she had plans with them, as discreetly as we could, but none confirmed.

NICHOLASRosa, dont leave this house until I get in touch with Victoria.

    Rosa quickly nods.

JOHNWhat do you want to do, Nick?

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

Undercover cars scour the surrounding streets as it rains.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Nicholas paces back and forth, working his cell.

INT. FIVE STAR HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

VICTORIA MOORE (late 30s), stepford trophy wife, lies naked in bed, half-covered by the silk sheets. Her phone BUZZES and NICHOLAS name appears on the screen. She declines the call and rolls her eyes.

    VICTORIAHe wont quit calling.

She glances over at the bathroom as the toilet FLUSHES. Out walks Jack Erickson, a towel around his waist (thats it).

    JACKSo, answer.

VICTORIAAnd, listen to him bitch? No, thanks.

Jack approaches and sits next to her on the bed.

JACKThis bill has him flustered, Vic.

    11.

  • VICTORIA(dismissive)

Does it even stand a chance?

JACK Thats up to the people.

    VICTORIAReally? Which ones?

    EXT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - NIGHT

Undercover cars parked out front. Flashlights dance in the distance.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Nicholas sits on a leather couch with his feet on a coffee table. Laptop in his lap, scotch at his side and cell ear piece in. Fox News on the flat screen.

NICHOLASNo, its under control. Theres no way the bill passes, Jim. Trust me, were good.

(listens)Of course. But, a campaign contribution is going to cost you a hell of a lot less than this bill would. So, write the check, gas the jet and take your wives on vacation.

    He downs the scotch.

    EXT. DC PARK - NIGHT

Undercover cars continue to scour the neighborhood.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Nicholas has awkwardly fallen asleep on the couch.

    JOHN (O.S.)Sir? Sir?

    Nicholas jars awake.

    NICHOLAS(half-asleep)

    Yeah? Yeah, whats up?

    JOHNWe got nothin.

    12.

  • Nicholas runs his hands over his face.

    NICHOLASAny friends come back?

    JOHNNo.

NICHOLASThis is Victoria. I know it.

(beat)Give it till morning. Shell take her to school, and pretend she wasnt being a bitch.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Bookcases filled to the brim dominate this mahogany room.

Nicholas sits at a desk in the center, sifting through files and checking his laptop. Cell ear piece.

NICHOLASI got it, Paul. Trust me on this. Give me 24 hours and Ill have them creating a college fund in all of your kids names.

(listens)Has it ever mattered how I do it? No. Because it gets done.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - LATER

Nicholas sits in front of his laptop, his cell ear piece his closest friend. Flat screen on in front of him as pure static noise.

He yawns, a seemingly never ending exhaustion.

His cell abruptly BUZZES, grabbing his attention. The callers number is PRIVATE. He slowly answers, half-asleep.

    NICHOLAS(exhausted irritation)

    Paul, I told you--

The voice on the other end is deep (not overt, but enough). Potentially masking an identity?

    MAN (V.O.)Mr. Moore?

    NICHOLASYeah. Who is this?

    13.

  • MAN (V.O.)Can we talk?

Nicholas glances at the time on his laptop: 2:30am.

    NICHOLASIts two-thirty in the morning.

    MAN (V.O.)I understand.

    NICHOLASBut you called anyway?

MAN (V.O.)I need help with a bill.

NICHOLASDo you know how long that line is?

    MAN (V.O.)This ones special.

Nicholas gets up and pours another scotch.

    NICHOLAS(chuckles)

Look, if youre with the humane society, I dont do bills to fight the inhumane treatment of gerbils, so--

MAN (V.O.)Theres a life on the line here.

NICHOLASThere usually is. But, normally with two legs.

MAN (V.O.)I dont think you understand.

NICHOLASThen clearly you dont know me.

(beat, intrigued)Again, I didnt catch your name?

MAN (V.O.)Ive put the details in your mail slot. Id like you to start work immediately.

That gets Nicholas attention. Not in a good way.

    14.

  • NICHOLASWhat? Look, I dont know how you got this number, but you dont just call and--

    Click.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)Hello? What the... fuckinliberals. Jesus Christ.

Nicholas ends the call and rubs his eyes. Takes a deep breath and leaves the room.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - HALLWAY - NIGHT

Nicholas exits his study and moves down the hall.

Glances in Alisons room. Turns back.

    NICHOLAS(raised voice)

    Rosa? Rosa?

    Nothing.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Nicholas surveys. Grabs his cell. Dials ALISON. Straight to voicemail.

    ALISON (V.O.)Hi, this is Alison--

Nicholas ends the call, looks around. Now a little worried. Walks out.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - FOYER - NIGHT

Nicholas walks to the MAIL SLOT and stares at first. Humors, and decides to collect. Sifts through the junk: SALES ENVELOPES, PRE-APPROVED CREDIT CARDS, HIGH-END RETAIL CATALOGS, gets to a WHITE ENVELOPE that simply reads: NICK.

Confused, he opens it and unfolds a piece of paper. A POLAROID PHOTO falls out, but he leaves it.

Quickly skims the contents of the letter: PASS THE HOUSING BILL, OR SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR DAUGHTER. His face hardens.

He reaches down and picks up the photo: ALISON GAGGED & TIED.

    NICHOLASWhat the...

    15.

  • He steps back, now completely awake. Quickly moves out of the room.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - ALISONS ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas cases the room. Checks the windows. Scours the closets. Looks under the bed. Nothing. Deep breath.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - PLAYROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas enters a room filled with toys.

    NICHOLAS(wishful thinking)

    Alison? Alison?

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STAIRS - MOMENTS LATER

    Nicholas quickly jogs down.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - GARAGE - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas enters. Stares at the Mercedes AMG and SUV parked next to it. Stops, thinks... grabs his cell and calls VICTORIA. Goes straight to voicemail.

    NICHOLASShit.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas passes behind his desk. Stops and thinks. Who does he go to with something like this? Hesitation. No clear answer. He sits on his desk, attempting to get his feet back.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - DEN - NIGHT

Tucked away and hidden in the corner is this small, private room. Cabinets and safes line the walls.

John stands with his crew, the PHOTO of Alison in his hand. Behind him, THOMPSON (40s), lengthy and calm. ABRAMS (30s), short and ambitious.

    JOHNAny idea whod do this?

    NICHOLASDoesnt matter. Theyre doing it.

(beat)I need your discretion on this. This has to be kept to the chest.

    16.

  • Anyone, and I mean anyone else finds out and Im fucked. This shit spreads like wild fire itll be impossible to get out alive. Someone has compromised my position.

(beat)Make sure Rosa stays around. Keep an eye out for anything.

    (eerie beat)And, dont trust anyone.

INT. UNDERCOVER CAR 1 - DAY

Morning. Through binoculars we see the front of PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY. A modern marvel to the likes of which most elementary schools wouldnt look as good as the bathrooms.

STUDENTS enter. Not parents dropping off, ASSISTANTS and NANNIES.

DAVID (40s), teachers aide, greets. Seems to be a fan favorite. Although, theres something a bit slow about him.

INT. UNDERCOVER CAR 2 - DAY

Another set of binoculars from a different angle.

    NICHOLAS (V.O.)Anything?

John drops the binoculars and talks into his ear piece.

    JOHNThompson?

    THOMPSON (V.O.)Nothing.

    JOHNAbrams?

ABRAMS (V.O.)No dice. She isnt here.

    EXT. DC STREETS - DAY

Nicholas, dressed to impress, and ready to play like this is any other day. Cell ear piece lit blue.

NICHOLASStay out there till they all go in. Watch for anything. Anything at all.

    17.

    NICHOLAS (CONT'D)

  • He turns and stares at the entrance to the firm. Dark power and prestige.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)Make sure this shit is real.

INT. HOLLAND, MARKS & ASSOCIATES (HMA) - DAY

Theres all the extravagance and modernness of DC excess, then theres this. And, most clients here have ten thousand dollar umbrellas.

An absolute madhouse. Phones never stop. ASSISTANTS dash every which way. ATTORNEYS debate briefs. LATTES galore. CELL PHONES buzz. This is pure, unadulterated DC cachet - inside and out.

Nicholas cant get two steps before his name is shouted from every angle.

MAN / WOMAN (O.S.)Nick! Nick! Nick!

INT. HMA - NICHOLAS OFFICE - DAY

Nicholas enters the corporate room and immediately shuts the door, a little frazzled.

MELISSA (O.S.)You didnt answer this morning.

He whips around, his best attempt at normal.

    NICHOLASA little busy.

MELISSAYou worry too much. The bills not going to pass. You made sure of that.

He nods with a grin. Thanks for the reminder.

She approaches close, showing off her upper register.

MELISSA (CONTD)(throw me over your desk)

    Any way I can help?

She goes to touch him, but he quickly grabs her arm.

    NICHOLAS(distant)

    Not right now.

    18.

  • She stares at him, sensing the uneasiness.

MELISSAMaybe later. Can I get you something?

    Nicholas thinks.

NICHOLASYeah. A list of the meetings I had with everyone on the bill.

(beat)And, the names of all staff at Prescott Elementary.

    MELISSA(confused)

    Im sorry?

His cell BUZZES. BLOCKED on the screen.

NICHOLASI need to take this (alone).

She suspiciously stares as she leaves. He waits till the door closes...

    NICHOLAS (CONTD)(answers)

    Nick.

MAN (V.O.)Do I have your attention?

    Nicholas locks the door.

NICHOLASAre you sure thats what you want?

MAN (V.O.)If you want your daughter back.

A HARD KNOCK at the door startles Nicholas.

    NICHOLAS(at door, curt)

    Give me a sec.

MAN (V.O.)I understand this works in direct conflict with your firms clients being the banks and all, but we need you to forget about that.

    (beat)

    19.

  • The vote is in ten days, Mr. Moore and we need it to pass.

    NICHOLAS(real panic)

And, I need you to get a fuckingrip and realize what the fuckyoure asking here.

MAN (V.O.)If the bill doesnt pass, youll never see your daughter again. Realize that.

NICHOLASListen, asshole. If you think for one second--

MAN (V.O.)You dont control this, Nick. Not any more. Understand that. The only way you can talk your way out of this one is to get this bill passed.

    (beat)Think about Alison.

    Click.

Nicholas tosses his cell on the desk in frustration. Deep breath. He HAMMERS the desk with both hands.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DUSK

Kevin leads a group of PROTESTERS in chants.

KEVINGive us back our homes! Give us back our homes! Tell Congress to pass the housing bill! Pass the bill! Pass the bill!

    LATER

Kevin speaks with a GROUP OF PROTESTERS.

KEVIN (CONTD)Congressman Erickson controls the vote on this bill. Tomorrow we organize in front of his house, then move here.

    (beat)

    20.

    MAN (V.O.) (CONT'D)

  • Bryan, call media and give them a heads up. Everyone else, make your voices heard.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DUSK

Nicholas sits outside of Prescott Elementary watching the STUDENTS leave.

    EXT. DC STREETS - DUSK

David rides through on his bike, helmet and all. He signals to turn right with traffic and does.

EXT. DAVIDS APARTMENT COMPLEX - DUSK

David gets to the outside of his complex. A quaint, but well manicured place. He hops off his bike, picks it up and carefully moves up the stairs with it.

INT. DAVIDS APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER

The door opens and David wheels his bike in. He sets it in the corner and removes his shoulder bag, drops it on the hardwood. Deep breath. Looks around.

The size could only be compared to a Fiat. The basic studio room is immaculate though and not a hair out of place.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

A frazzled Nicholas sits across from John. A THICK FILE in front of them.

JOHNThats short background on the staff. Were waiting for more.

Nicholas peruses. John waits a second then...

JOHN (CONTD)You think theyll hurt her?

    NICHOLASThey dont want her.

    JOHNWhat do they want?

NICHOLASMe. I dont go after her and I get crucified. Douchebag of a father. I go after her and someone finds out, everyone sees Im vulnerable.

    21.

    KEVIN (CONTD)

  • Vulnerability is another word for liability - death to any lobbyist. Our clients will leave and my career is over.

    JOHNWhat about the bill?

NICHOLASI try to pass this bill and Ill be at the bottom of the Potomac in twenty-four hours.

    Nicholas thinks hard.

    JOHNWhere do we start?

    NICHOLAS...the school.

(beat)We need someone on the inside.

    JOHNWho?

    Nicholas thinks...

    INT. DAVIDS APARTMENT - NIGHT

David lies on his couch pull-out bed, about the only bed he could fit in this place. He turns the page as he reads Homers The Odyssey.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DAWN

Through binoculars: a heavily manicured BRUNETTE (40s), makes her way down the steps of her brownstone. Gets in her Volvoand starts it up.

INT. UNDERCOVER CAR 2 - DAWN

Through binoculars: a lengthy CHAP (50s), appropriately makes his way across the sidewalk and gets into his C-Class.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DAWN

Through binoculars: a gorgeous BLOND (30s), sitting in her Z3, takes one last puff of on her Marlboro. Tosses it out the window and rolls it up.

    22.

    NICHOLAS (CONT'D)

  • INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - HALLWAY - DAY

The manicured Brunette walks with a MALE TEACHER. Passes the Chap as he studies pages.

EXT. DAVIDS APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY

David carries his bike down the steps of this heavily manicured place. Applies his helmet and rides.

    EXT. ERICKSONS HOUSE - DAY

A mob of PROTESTERS has descended on the front gates. A CABLE NEWS REPORTER interviews Kevin.

KEVINWe want everyone out there to send an email to Congressman Jack Erickson. [email protected] Tell him our lives are in his hands and if this bill doesnt pass it will be because of him.

    The MOB CHEERS.

    MOMENTS LATER

Kevin speaks with a LOCAL REPORTER.

KEVIN (CONTD)Were out here for the people. Because no one represents them. Not anymore.

    LATER

Kevin speaks with a NETWORK REPORTER.

KEVIN (CONTD)This country lives and dies by the middle-class. It always has. Always will.

    INT. HMA - DAY

Nicholas stands next to a fellow ATTORNEY as he reviews a file. Stares up at the flat screen - a live shot of Kevin speaking to the reporter.

ATTORNEYSo, were looking at the file and all of a sudden...

    23.

  • The mans words fade into silence as Nicholas focuses on STAFF moving through the business. Watching EVERYONE closely. Attempting to see something. A nervous tick. A suspicious glance. Something off. Anything.

Generational golden spoon, head partner, MATTHEW HOLLAND (40s), makes his way through in head-to-toe Armani. Attracting staff like flies.

    ATTORNEY (O.S.) (CONTD)Nick? Nick?

    NICHOLAS(snapping out of it)

    Yeah. Run with it.

Nicholas moves away and the Attorney stares at him in disbelief like hes never heard that response before.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DAY

Through binoculars: a PAY PHONE. John takes them down and gets out of the car.

INT. HMA - NICHOLAS OFFICE - DAY

Nicholas sits at his desk, flipping through the PRESCOTT STAFF FILE. PHOTOS of the people we saw under surveillance in the morning peppered throughout. He stops on David.

INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - SURVEILLANCE ROOM - DAY

John, dressed in a surveillance company uniform, surveys the monitors and images currently coming through the cameras. He looks at the different angles, searching. One of the monitors is out.

EXT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - PARKING LOT - DUSK

David walks out and over to the bike rack.

    NICHOLAS (O.S.)Still ridin that thing?

David turns and surprisingly stares at an approaching Nicholas. His stutter permanent.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)How longs it been now, three years?

    24.

  • DAVID(grin)

    And, traffics only g-gettingworse.

NICHOLASWhich means youll be riding it for another three?

    David nods with a grin.

    DAVIDProbably.

(beat)I noticed Alison w-w-wasnt in today. Is she feeling okay?

    NICHOLASYeah, yeah. Just a bug.

    (beat)You got a free minute?

    EXT. DC PARK - DUSK

    Nicholas walks with David.

NICHOLASYouve been at that school, what, four years now, David?

    DAVIDAbout f-f-four-and-a-half.

    NICHOLASYou still like it?

    DAVIDI love the kids.

NICHOLASThats good. You must know everyone?

    DAVIDJust about.

NICHOLASWhat do you think of them?

    DAVID(thoroughly confused)

    W-w-what do you mean?

    25.

  • NICHOLASDo they seem like good people? People youd be around outside of work?

    They come across a bench.

    DAVID(motions to bench)

    Do you mind?

Nicholas shakes his head as they sit.

DAVID (CONTD)Most of them are t-too high of a pay grade to be outside of work with... Im just an... an aide. Not an actual p-professor.

NICHOLASWhen did they start calling elementary school teachers professors anyway?

DAVIDWhen people started p-paying a lot of money for el-lementary school.

    NICHOLASTouche.

(beat, serious)Let me ask you something... anyone, anyone at all stand out to you as a little... I dont know, whats the right word here... off?

    David stares back in confusion.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT (PRESENT)

John stands next to the large flat screen. Its split in 4 views of the school on the day Alison disappeared.

Nicholas stands in front, focused on the images.

JOHNThe call came from a pay phone near the school. Completely wiped down. The paper and ink isnt special. Every store in a twenty mile radius has it.

    NICHOLASWhat about the school?

    26.

  • INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - CLASSROOM - DAY (FLASHBACK)

The amazing glass design dazzles. Like no classroom most of us have or ever will see.

The uniformed 5th grade STUDENTS politely stare forward at their PRISSY FEMALE TEACHER (40s). The clock at the head of room: 3:35pm.

PRISSYOpen your books to page 65. Well be continuing our classical literature studies.

In the back of the room taking notes is teachers aide DAVID MARKS, who weve already met, but even in this setting he looks a bit too old to be an aide, and his stutter doesnt help.

PRISSY (O.S.) (CONTD)Alright, Timothy, please read the first paragraph at the top of the page, and this time--

    The FIRE ALARM suddenly bellows.

The STUDENTS get restless as they turn to each other.

    Prissy rolls her eyes.

PRISSY (CONTD)Everyone, calm down. Its just a fire drill.

She makes eye contact with David, as if this is unexpected. He shrugs.

PRISSY (CONTD)Alright, lets all stand and follow me out in an orderly fashion. And, no mistakes like the last time.

The students rise like robots as Prissy leads their way out.

David follows from the back, the last to leave. The line stops.

    DAVIDKeep moving... d-d-dont stop.

    David ushers them out.

    27.

  • INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - HALLWAY - DAY (FLASHBACK)

STUDENTS of different ages orderly make their way out. TEACHERS lead the way and AIDES follow.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

John plays the top right corner, points.

JOHNThe fire alarm goes off. People start moving through the halls. It gets a little difficult to make out whos who, but then I found this...

A grainy image of a young girl passes in the distance.

    NICHOLAS...looks like Alison.

John pauses the top right and plays the top left.

The same girl passes from right to left, but quickly moves out of frame. Not five seconds later a MAN, middle-aged and white, steps through the threshold she just passed and stares in her direction. Pause.

    Nicholas steps forward.

    NICHOLAS (CONTD)Who is it?

    JOHNWe dont know yet.

John plays the bottom left corner.

The schools entrance. The STUDENTS and STAFF exit in an orderly fashion and form a line. But, theres so many its more of a mass.

    JOHN (CONTD)Look back.

John points to the back of the screen where we can see a group of PROTESTERS filtering through.

    NICHOLASWheres the sound?

    JOHNThere isnt any.

    28.

  • NICHOLAS(to himself)

    Son of a...

The bottom left corner pauses as the Protesters move out of frame. John plays the bottom right. The Protesters march along the outside of the school, but the camera doesnt catch the angle that would be required to see anyone going from the school into the protest. Pause.

JOHN...they move right past the school. Past that gate.

    NICHOLASWheres the other angle?

JOHNThere isnt one. One of the cameras is being repaired.

NICHOLASAnd, thats the camera that covered that angle?

    JOHNYeah.

Nicholas stares at the screen, seething.

    NICHOLASFuck.

Nicholas turns away. If he had something in his hand it would be against the wall right now.

JOHNIt looks like he used the protest crowd to hide their exit.

NICHOLASHe knows I cant go public.

    (beat)Son of a bitch!

(beat)Who the fuck is this guy?

    JOHNYou think hes a protester?

    INT. UNKNOWN ROOM - NIGHT

Dark. No windows. A small bulb flickers to life.

    29.

  • ALISON MOORE (10), daddys little girl, hiding the blonde hair with dark dye, sits up. Shes blindfolded, with ear buds in, but not tied. Dried eye liner runs on her cheeks. Shes a little afraid, but good at masking it. Her surroundings of a bed, comforter and blankets dont exactly scream hostage.

A FIGURE steps forward and sits in a chair. CLINKS a spoon against the cereal bowl.

Alison moves to the edge of the bed and opens her mouth.

    EXT. ERICKSONS HOUSE - DAWN

Kevin leads the crowd in chants.

CHANTS (OF MANY)Pass the bill! Pass the bill! Give us back our homes!

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

John, REDSKINS CAP & jeans, walks through the middle of the protest. Middle-class of every race, creed & gender shout.

CHANTS (OF MANY)Give us back our homes! Pass the bill! Pass the bill! Give us back our homes!

    The CHANTS continue to echo.

    JOHN(soft)

    Anything?

    AHEAD IN THE CROWD

Thompson - close to the insignia on his WIZARDS CAP reveals the microchip camera.

    THOMPSON(soft)

    Could be anyone.

NICHOLAS (V.O.)Its not anyone. This guy is obsessive. He wants power... the spotlight. Trust me. I know the type.

    FRONT OF THE CROWD

    30.

  • Abrams - moves toward Kevin as he sparks the crowd with a bull horn. A small DEVICE in Abrams hand clicks as he pushes a button. Microchip camera.

KEVINWhat do we want? Our homes! When do we want them? Now! Tell the banks its time to pay! Time to pay! Time to pay!

    ABRAMSI got something.

INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - HALLWAY - DAY

David moves through staring at a note pad. He stops, glances up and through a window. Nicholas shakes hands with the PRINCIPAL (50s), studious, as they move into a room and close the door. This leaves him curious.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

John sneaks a peek at Kevin as he passionately speaks with a group of PROTESTERS gathered around.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DUSK

John drives, keeping a close eye on a car ahead of him.

    INT. KEVINS HONDA - SAME

A few cars ahead, Kevin drives a piece of shit mid-90s Hondacoupe. Peeling everything.

INT. UNDERCOVER CAR 2 - DUSK

Through binoculars: parked across the street, we see Kevin move up the stairs to his rundown apartment complex.

INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY - PRINCIPALS OFFICE - DUSK

David walks into the office. The Principal sits at his desk.

    DAVIDSir?

The Principal glances up from his paperwork.

    PRINCIPALDavid.

    DAVIDWas Alison Moores f-father here?

    31.

  • PRINCIPALHe dropped off a note.

DAVIDDid he say w-w-when Alison will be back?

PRINCIPALAfter the break. According to the doctor.

    DAVIDIs she okay?

PRINCIPALI believe so. Didnt sound serious.

    David nods.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Nicholas sifts through PHOTOS of the protesters and comes across Kevin.

JOHNTheres a few out there, but this guy seems to be the one who rallies them. Gets them going.

    NICHOLASWho is he?

    JOHNHis names Kevin Sims.

    NICHOLASWheres he from?

JOHNWe dont have a lot right now. Prelim is he moved from Jersey a few years back. Lives on the outskirts of Morgan in a small apartment.

    NICHOLASWhys he out there?

    JOHNHis company went under.

    NICHOLASWhat was it?

    32.

  • JOHNElectronics.

    NICHOLASAs-in cameras?

JOHNAs-in his company installed Prescotts surveillance a few years back.

Nicholas face hardens as he grits his teeth.

    NICHOLASHow can we get closer?

JOHNWithout being made? I dont know. Theres a lot of people out there paying attention, Nick. Especially journalists.

(beat)Is there no one we can go to?

Nicholas flips through the catalog in his head, but its short.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas sifts through SURVEILLANCE PHOTOS of Kevin as he combs the background files. Glances up at the TV and sees a news clip of Kevin earlier in the day.

KEVIN (ON TV)Were fighting every day and we will continue until our voices are heard.

He gets up and comes around to be closer, turns up the volume. It changes to a NEWS ANCHOR.

NEWS ANCHOR (ON TV)This bill is definitely gaining momentum...

Nicholas cell BUZZES. BANK OF U.S. on the screen. He just stares, without answering, because he already knows whats on the other end.

    EXT. PRIVATE AIRSTRIP - DAWN

Nicholas walks, briefcase in-hand, to a Gulfstream.

    33.

  • NEWS ANCHOR (V.O.)...and what was previously seen as dead on arrival on the Senate floor has now turned a strategic corner.

EXT. NEW YORK CITY - DAY

Financial district. A madhouse of traffic, horns and people.

NEWS ANCHOR (V.O.)Many are wondering, could this bill actually have legs?

EXT. BANK OF U.S. - DAY

A gargantuan skyscraper of epic proportions casts dark, gothic shadows on the city below.

INT. BANK OF U.S. - DAY

Nicholas passes through SECURITY as BUSINESS PEOPLE mingle. The size and scope make everything else seem small.

    ELEVATORS

Nicholas slides in through a closing elevator as we stay on the plaque above the UP ARROW that reads: BANK OF U.S.

INT. BANK OF U.S. - ELEVATOR - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas stands inside as the elevator moves up. Nervously adjusts his tie. He watches the numbers ascend. This trip is taking a while, which means one thing - hes headed to the top floor.

INT. BANK OF U.S. - CEOS OFFICE - DAY

Surrounded by all glass, there isnt a better, more expensive view of New York City. Staring out at that view is JIM DEFLORE (50s), the perfect mixture of power and obscene money, with a sprinkle of hard ass just below the surface.

Nicholas stares back from a chair in front of his desk.

    The overt silence almost scary.

Measured, Jim turns around and walks to his desk. Picks up a PIECE OF PAPER.

JIMMy daughter just completed an assignment on the marine ecosystem and food chain.

    34.

  • He turns the paper around. A marine food chain DIAGRAM: sharks on the top, phytoplankton on the bottom.

JIM (CONTD)And, she had a very astute observation, Nick. Shes seven, but absolutely brilliant.

Jim puts the paper back on his desk, comes around to the corner and sits on the edge. Stares down at Nicholas.

JIM (CONTD)She said, If sharks are at the top of the food chain, dad do they get to bully the entire ocean?

    Jim smiles. Now thats scary.

JIM (CONTD)So, I told her that the diagram wasnt entirely accurate. That, above sharks there should be people, because in all fairness, we eat sharks... every day. In fact, we eat just about everything, including each other.

(poignant beat)And, it reminded me, Nick, that no matter where we are or who we become... how larger than life we see ourselves, there will always be someone on the food chain who can open their mouth and swallow us whole. Especially, if were screwing up the water for others.

(beat)I think its safe to say, the calmer the water the fewer the sharks.

Nicholas nods, completely understanding. But no attempt to even speak at this moment.

    Jim leans down and whispers.

JIM (CONTD)Im not giving a dime back to those guppies. So, spread the word - if this shit doesnt go down in flames, everyone who pushed it through will... everyone.

Jim sits back on his desk, a quick switch to normal.

    35.

  • JIM (CONTD)We appreciate your business, Nick. And, as its always been, we know youll continue to represent Bank of U.S. with the utmost integrity and ingenuity in our efforts to better the financial world.

    (beat)Jackson has your fee.

INT. BANK OF U.S. - LOBBY - DAY

Nicholas quickly exits, the tip of a white envelope peeking out of his inside jacket pocket.

INT. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - HALLWAY - DAY

Abrams stands on a ladder installing a video camera. Dressed in a different surveillance company uniform than John.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DUSK

Nicholas speeds through the DC streets.

INT. MATTHEW HOLLANDS OFFICE - DUSK

Built for a modern King who could buy any crown. Period.

Matthew sits behind his gigantic desk, staring at Nicholas.

MATTHEWWhat the fuck is going on here, Nick? Youre off the grid and Im getting calls from Jim about a fuckin insider telling him this bill isnt DOA.

Nicholas nods, a little out of it.

MATTHEW (CONTD)Im sorry, did you just nod? What the hell are you doing about this shit?

    NICHOLASIll take care of it.

    MATTHEWYoull take care of it?

NICHOLASI always do. I always have, Matt. This isnt any different.

    36.

  • MATTHEWAny different? This could cut the profit the banks made on housing depreciation in half. And, in the process royally fuck the bottomlinefor every bank in this firm... and if it fucks them, it fucks us. I need to know youre not sleeping until this shit crashes.

NICHOLASNo, Im not sleeping. Okay, Matt? Im taking care of it. Im taking care of this shit, like I always do.

Matthew stares back, liking the emotion he sees.

MATTHEWGood. Cause I dont want to have to have a conversation about what would happen if you didnt.

Nicholas stares back, wanting his head on a plate.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DUSK

    The protest continues...

INT. JACKS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - WAITING ROOM - DUSK

Nicholas, already hot, speaks with a SKINNY RECEPTIONIST (30s), sitting behind a desk.

NICHOLASI get hes busy, but I just need a few seconds with him.

SKINNY RECEPTIONISTIm sorry, sir, but his calendar is full.

NICHOLASYou want me to call him and ask him that?

    SKINNY RECEPTIONISTFeel free.

Nicholas stares back at her about to take her head off. He glances at the VISITORS around and thinks better of it. Leans down close to her.

    37.

  • NICHOLASDo you know who the fuck I am?

    SKINNY RECEPTIONISTYes, sir.

NICHOLASSo, Im going to ask you again and think carefully about how you answer--

SKINNY RECEPTIONISTMr. Moore, I wish I could let you through, but Mr. Erickson is in a special meeting and--

NICHOLASA special meeting? A special meeting about what?

SKINNY RECEPTIONISTWould you like me to pass along a message?

Nicholas glares at her, biting his tongue.

INT. TOMS CONGRESIONAL OFFICE - WAITING ROOM - DUSK

Nicholas speaks with a CHUBBY RECEPTIONIST (20s).

NICHOLASI need thirty seconds with him, thats it. No more, no less.

CHUBBY RECEPTIONISTIm sorry, sir. Mr. Cain is in a special meeting. If youd like to leave a message Ill be sure to--

    Nicholas walks out.

INT. JACKS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - WAITING ROOM - DUSK

The skinny receptionist picks up the phone.

    SKINNY RECEPTIONISTYes, sir. Hes gone.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DUSK

Nicholas sits in the drivers seat breathing deeply. He hammers the wheel with his hand. Over and over.

    38.

  • NICHOLASSon of a bitch!

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

David rides through on his bike. His quiet release. The wind through his hair. He closes his eyes as he glides like a bird.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - NIGHT

    Nicholas speeds through the streets.

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

David rides through, stares up at the stars in the sky, soaking up the beauty.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - NIGHT

Nicholas guns it and runs a red light.

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

David continues to ride, seemingly no destination in sight. Trees line the street. A deep breath. Just he and the air around him.

    INT. KEVIN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

John, black leather gloves, screws the fire alarm back in place. Looks around the darkness with his flashlight.

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

David rides through, light as a feather.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - NIGHT

Nicholas attempts to drive as he pours over the PHOTOS from the protest. Settles on one of Kevin as he shouts. Picks it up and stares. Not focused on the road.

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

David continues to ride, goes to make a swift left turn at an intersection. A massive tree on the corner.

Bright headlights flood as they head straight for him.

    OVER WHITE

    SCREECH-SKID-THUD... silence.

    39.

  • INT. NICHOLAS HOME - FOYER - NIGHT

Nicholas enters, highly flustered, and moves to his left.

    VICTORIA (O.S.)What are you doing?

He turns back to find Victoria half-way up the stairs coming down, a small suitcase in-hand.

NICHOLASNot trying to get a hold of you anymore. Thanks for answering my calls.

She doesnt move from where shes at.

VICTORIAThanks for calling at the most inopportune times.

NICHOLASI try not to call when youre on your back, Victoria, but that doesnt leave a whole lot of time, so...

VICTORIAOh wow, how ironic. A whore joke from a K street lobbyist.

    Nicholas approaches the bottom steps.

NICHOLASLook, I dont give a shit who youre fucking anymore, but when I call, answer the phone like Im the last God damn person on Earth. I needed to talk to you.

    VICTORIAAbout what?

    NICHOLASDoesnt matter now.

    VICTORIA(facetious)

    Sounds really important.

NICHOLASIs that the last of your stuff?

    40.

  • VICTORIAYes.

    NICHOLASExcellent.

    Nicholas walks away.

    VICTORIAWheres Alison?

NICHOLAS (O.S.)With a friend. I dont have time to explain to you what that is.

    VICTORIAWe need to talk.

    NICHOLAS (O.S.)You have Wills number.

    She storms down the stairs.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas moves behind his desk, frazzled.

    Victoria enters, heated.

    VICTORIAStop being an asshole.

NICHOLASVictoria, Im not doing this. You want to talk? Call Will. Thats what we agreed.

    VICTORIAShes my daughter too.

    NICHOLASWhy do you care now?

    VICTORIAIve always cared.

NICHOLASIn between fundraisers and charity events.

    VICTORIAScrew you.

    41.

  • NICHOLASI think you already have.

(beat)Now, I have work to do. And, unless you want your fifty-percent to decrease, I suggest you let me get to it.

    She glares back, nailed.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas sits at his desk, cell ear piece in. The condensation from his third scotch drips on his desk.

NICHOLASJack, where are you? Ive been trying to get a hold of you for hours. Call me.

    Nicholas hammers back the scotch.

His phone BUZZES and quickly snatches it up, without a glance.

    NICHOLAS (CONTD)Jack?

    (listens)What?

    INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAWN

David lies asleep in bed. A few bumps and bruises, but nothing that seems overly threatening. A few IVs stick out of him. A NURSE takes his temperature.

INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - DAY

Nicholas moves through. Stops a KOREAN NURSE in the hallway and she points toward a room further down.

INT. DAVIDS HOSPITAL ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Nicholas walks in and stares down at a sleeping David in bed. Moves to the end and picks up his CHART. Flips through it: CAR COLLISION... CLOSED HAIR LINE FRACTURE... BRUISED RIBS... CONCUSSION...

    DOCTOR (O.S.)Are you family, sir?

Nicholas turns. A DOCTOR (40s) enters.

    42.

  • NICHOLASNo, Im just a... a friend.

    DOCTOR(approaching)

Do you happen to know any of Mr. Marks family?

NICHOLASNo, I dont. He works at the school my daughter goes to. Has for some time. Hes her favorite.

DOCTOROkay. Well, we found your card in Mr. Marks pocket, so we called.

(beat)As you can see, the injury isnt life threatening. Luckily for him not what I see with most vehicle collisions. He should be up and out of here in no time. Although, I cant say he should be riding a bike again any time soon.

    NICHOLAS(nods)

Yeah, try to tell him that.

DOCTORAt least he was wearing a helmet.

(beat)Should be up in a few hours if you want to come back and see him.

NICHOLASDo the police know who hit him?

    DOCTORYoud have to ask them.

Nicholas nods as he stares at David.

INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - DAY

Nicholas anxiously waits for the elevator. It CHIMES and the door opens. He steps in. Just as the door closes, the elevator to the right CHIMES and opens.

    Off walks Kevin.

    43.

  • INT. DAVIDS HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY

Kevin sits next to Davids bed as he eats. A NURSE takes his blood pressure.

KEVINIm really sorry. I didnt see you at all.

DAVIDIts okay. I should have had m-myreflectors on. I l-l-left them at the school.

KEVINI saw on the chart you work for Prescott?

    DAVIDIm just an aide.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DUSK

Nicholas sits in the drivers seat, contemplating. Parked on the street outside of HMA. But, not going in. Grabs his cell and dials. It goes straight to voicemail.

JACK (V.O.)This is Jack, leave a message--

    Nicholas ends the call, frustrated.

    MOMENTS LATER

    Nicholas on his cell again.

NICHOLASJohn? I need you to look into something.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - NIGHT

Through binoculars: Kevin gets in his car out front of the hospital. Starts it up and pulls away.

John drops the binocs and tails from a short distance.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - NIGHT

John sits parked just outside a run-down motel. He watches Kevin pull in, get out and enter a room.

    44.

  • He pulls in, lights off, and parks a short distance behind Kevins car. Sits and waits. Looks around. Clearly a new area. Not a whole lot of light casts deep shadows.

    EXT. DC STREETS - NIGHT

Nicholas walks through the empty streets attempting to clear his head. A taxi drives by, the only living soul out at this time of night. He looks at the monuments in the distance. A higher calling at one time. Deep breath.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - NIGHT

John sits staring at the outside of the room Kevin entered, and his surroundings.

Kevin exits the room and walks to a car thats a few spaces down. Gets in.

John confusedly stares. Grabs the audio transmitter and points it at the car. It CRACKLES to life.

    KEVIN (V.O.)...found our fall guy.

    WOMAN (V.O.)Who is he?

KEVIN (V.O.)You worry about your boss, Ill take care of the rest.

    WOMAN (V.O.)What about the kid?

    KEVIN (V.O.)What about her?

WOMAN (V.O.)You think we should move her?

KEVIN (V.O.)I think you should handle what youre supposed to be handling and stop worrying about everything else. And, no more meetings for a while. Just do your job.

Kevin gets out of the car and moves back to his room.

The car Kevin got out of starts, backs up and drives right in front of John.

    45.

  • EXT. DC PARK - NIGHT

Nicholas moves to a bench and sits. Relishes the quiet. His breath drifts up and out in the cold as he contemplates.

He pulls out his cell and opens up the PHOTOS. Stares at one of Alison at the age of 5 - a better time. He looks up and around, reflective.

He goes to his contacts and scrolls down to Alison. Calls. It goes straight to voicemail.

ALISON (V.O.)This is Alison. Im probably in class if Im not picking up. Dad, if this is you, yes, Im in class. Stop worrying. Leave a message and Ill call you back. And, please dont ramble.

JOHN appears on the screen - about the only welcome call at this moment.

    NICHOLASHey John.

Nicholas looks perplexed by what hes being told.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas stands behind his desk, his anger rising. Ear buds in, attached to his cell. He stares at the PHOTOS of Kevin and a last ditch shot of MELISSA as she drove by John.

    MELISSA (V.O.)What about the kid?

    KEVIN (V.O.)What about her?

He rips the ear buds out, seething. The walls closing in.

Nicholas walks around the desk and over to his flat screen: split in 4 different views inside Kevins apartment. Kevin moves through. Nicholas gets close.

    EXT. WASHINGTON D.C. - DAWN

The sun sits on the horizon, amplifying the monuments that define this iconic city.

JOHN (V.O.)How do you want to do this?

    46.

  • EXT. KEVINS MOTEL - DAWN

Kevin leaves his room. Gets into his car and drives away.

NICHOLAS (V.O.)You take her. This assholes mine.

INT. KEVINS MOTEL ROOM - DAWN

The door handle jiggles and pops open.

Nicholas slides in and quickly closes the door. Locks it.

Looks around. Clothes scattered, a few boxes and a suitcase are all that surround. He moves through.

Opens a small closet, but its empty. He glances at debris. Sifts through a box that has nothing but PAPERS and NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS. He grabs the clippings and tosses them on the bed.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DAWN

Through binoculars: Kevin parks along a curb near The Capital.

INT. KEVINS MOTEL ROOM - BEDROOM - DAWN

Nicholas glances under the bed, but theres only a PAIR OF SHOES.

Moves to the dresser and searches the drawers. Nothing but socks, underwear and shirts inside.

To the suitcase and inside every pocket. Junk - candy wrappers, sodas, beef jerky, receipts. Nothing more.

He moves to the bed and checks the sheets. Pats everything and pulls the comforter down. Nothing.

Frustrated, he looks at the newspaper clippings. Picks them up, sifts through a few, settles on one and begins to read... he sits on the bed as something intriguing catches his eye.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

Kevin stands, a GROUP huddled around him.

KEVINWe only have a few days. We go after Erickson and we go after him hard. Get in front of the cameras and make it count. We arent going to get another shot.

    47.

  • (beat)This is our time. This is your time. Make it happen.

    LATER

The group chants from the top steps.

GROUPPass the bill! Pass the bill! Gives us back our homes! Give us back our homes!

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DAY

Nicholas sits behind the wheel in stunned silence.

On his passenger seat: the PRESCOTT BACKGROUND FILE, surveillance PHOTOS of Kevin. In front of him, a NEWSPAPER CLIPPING.

    Headline: MOTHER COMMITS SUICIDE

Skimming the article... JOB LOSS... DEBT... MEDICAL BILLS... FORECLOSURE... BANK OF U.S.... ANNE SIMS... TWO DAUGHTERS... FOUND IN GARAGE BY HUSBAND, KEVIN...

    INT. DAVIDS APARTMENT - DAY

    Kevin wheels David in.

KEVINIll put the medication over here.

Kevin sets the bottles on the kitchen counter.

    KEVIN (CONTD)Nice place.

    DAVIDIts all I can af-f-ord.

KEVINIts more than most of us can afford. Do you want some water?

    DAVIDNo, Im okay. Thank you.

Kevin sits on the couch, across from David.

KEVINDoc says your leg should be fine in a week or so.

    48.

    KEVIN (CONT'D)

  • DAVIDYeah, j-j-just in time to go back to school. So, I can w-walk in with a limp and talk with a st-tutter. Thatll help.

Kevin stares at David, realizing his self-consciousness.

KEVINI wanted to ask you, David... with all of the protests and such, wed love you to come out and be a part of it.

    David hesitates.

KEVIN (CONTD)At least for a few days?

DAVIDI d-d-dont know what I could do?

KEVINA lot actually. You have a very powerful voice. We all do.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DAY

Nicholas sits in his car, down the street from Davids place.

KEVIN (V.O.)And, word on the street is the bill is starting to gain momentum. People are coming around, David. Having someone else could really put us over the edge and make a huge difference in the lives of millions.

    (beat)What do you say?

Nicholas opens his glove compartment and removes a STACK OF PHOTOS. Brushes by a 9MM as he takes them out.

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DUSK

John pulls to the side of the road and parks. Watches as Melissa gets out and walks up to her place. She glances around the neighborhood as if checking to see if there are eyes on her.

    49.

  • EXT. JACKS HOUSE - REAR - DUSK

Jack moves around the back of the house, purposely avoiding the front. Leaning against the wall next to the door is Nicholas. Jack pulls up, hesitant.

    JACK Nick?

NICHOLASAre you in special meetings all day, or just when I show up?

    JACK Ive been busy.

NICHOLASWhats going on with the bill, Jack?

JACK I think were all trying to figure that out.

NICHOLASIts not that hard. Either it passes or it doesnt.

JACK I wish it was that simple.

    NICHOLASIt is.

Jack steps forward, attempting to cement his stance.

JACK I have constituents to answer to. Its never that simple.

NICHOLASYou know, Jack when you and I were coming up it was about balls. About taking what you wanted. Not about sitting around and having someone hand it to you.

JACKWhen you and I were coming up it was there for the taking. There wasnt anyone stopping us. There wasnt a ceiling. Things have changed.

    50.

  • NICHOLASYeah, now youre fuckin liberal.

JACKReally? Is that really the way you think, Nick? Someone goes out, spends 300k on a home, the market bottoms out because a bunch of Wall Street assholes get really fuckingreedy and now that same home is worth half that. And youre sitting there with a straight face telling me you think the bank should profit on something they caused? You think the middle-class should seriously continue paying when their home will never be worth what they signed for?

NICHOLASI think they should do whatever they want. What you do on the other hand is a different story.

JACK Look, I want to get behind this, but--

NICHOLASYou need a little convincing, yeah?

Nicholas reaches into his back pocket and pulls out the STACK OF PHOTOS from his glove compartment. Hands them to Jack. Jacks face drops immediately as he understands.

NICHOLAS (CONTD)Hows this? Every hooker youve ever dimed. Every waitress over a bar stool. Every hotel maid at the end of her shift.

(power beat)I told you, you want to be on my side. Its clear now that message didnt make it through. So, let me put this in a language youll understand. These will go to every major tabloid in this country if I do not have your backing. But, not before I send them to your wife, first.

    (beat)Return my fuckin calls, Jack.

Nicholas walks right by him, leaving Jack speechless.

    51.

  • INT. KEVINS MOTEL - DUSK

Kevin suspiciously scours the room, as if realizing someone has been there. He looks around, heads to the bathroom. Flips the light on. Nothing. Comes back in and opens the closet. Clear.

Goes to the dresser and pulls a drawer off the track, sets it on top. Reaches in and pulls out the POLAROID CAMERA. Still there. Sigh of relief.

INT. UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE - NIGHT

An elevator opens. Out walks Tom Cain. He moves through the darkness. Stops and looks around, as though having heard something. A car alarm BEEPS as its set.

He spooks as a BUSINESS MAN passes and goes into the elevator.

INT. TOMS BMW - MOMENTS LATER

Tom gets in, goes to put his briefcase in the back seat. Nicholas takes it from him. He jumps.

    TOM(taken back)

Jesus, Nick. What the hell? You scared the shit out of me.

NICHOLASReturn my calls and I wont have to.

    TOMIve been hammered.

NICHOLASIm hearing that a lot lately, Tom. What Im not hearing is whats going on with this bill.

    Tom attempts to stall.

    TOMNick--

NICHOLASWe want you out front. And, we want you out front now. This is the perfect opportunity for you to make your mark, Tom. For us to take you to the next level.

    52.

  • TOMI thought you wanted something fair, for everyone?

Nicholas leans forward, an intimidating presence.

NICHOLASOur position has changed. Wed like you to push it. Get out front and give the middle-class something to chew on.

    TOMI dont know, Nick.

NICHOLASGuaranteed re-election Super PAC backing from Bank of U.S.

Tom stares, intrigued at Nicholas through the rear view mirror.

    TOMTheres only four days left.

NICHOLASWhich means we have to act, and fast. We have a guy on the inside wed like you to get with.

    EXT. MELISSAS CONDO - NIGHT

Melissa sneaks out the back door and quietly shuts it. Climbs down the fire escape. Jogs down an alley. Looks back to make sure no one is following.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - NIGHT

Nicholas speeds through the DC streets. His tires SCREECH as he whips around a corner.

    EXT. DC PARK - NIGHT

Melissa quickly moves through, looking around, attempting to find someone. She sits on a bench and crosses her arms, nervously waiting in the cold. Glances at her watch.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas sits across from John at his desk. PHOTOS of Kevin spread throughout.

    53.

  • JOHNSix years ago he lost his job when they shipped it to India. His wife was stay-at-home and one of their kids had asthma. Spent everything on medical. Six months later, they lost their house.

    NICHOLASBank of U.S.?

    JOHN(nods)

Lived in a few apartments, but their debt was so high. He took odd jobs, but nothing stuck. They only had one car and it was about to be repossessed.

(beat)So, he jumps on the bus one day to go look for work. And, she drives to their old house, into the garage and... shuts the door.

Nicholas gets up and paces, thinking.

NICHOLASWhy does he move here? Of all places.

JOHNWhys he doing any of it? It wont bring his family back.

NICHOLASHe doesnt care. Not now. He wants to watch me burn. Because I fight for them. In his eyes, theres no difference.

    JOHNNick?

    Nicholas turns to John.

    JOHN (CONTD)Is there another option?

NICHOLASI dont have it, John. He may think I do. But, when you have it, you spend it. And, Im not selling shit to pay off this asshole.

    54.

  • JOHNWhat about Alison?

NICHOLASI know, I know... well get her back. Trust me. Well get her back.

    EXT. DC ALLEY - NIGHT

Melissa moves through the darkness, carefully surveying her surroundings. Shes quickly grabbed around the mouth and pulled to the side. Her muffled screams go unheard.

    ABRAMS (O.S.)Be quiet. Its me.

He releases her and she turns to him about to take his head off.

    MELISSAWhat the hell was that?

ABRAMSWe cant do this in the park. Theres too many eyes and ears.

MELISSAI thought you were the eyes and ears?

ABRAMSHe knows. Okay? Now he knows.

(beat)I volunteered to follow you, but theres only so much I can keep off the radar.

He goes to touch her, but she swats his hand away.

MELISSAYour job isnt to keep it off the radar. Its to adjust the settings. Is that going to be a problem?

    ABRAMS(change of direction)

Look, you may think you know what youre doing, and who youre messing with here, but you better be careful. You get sloppy, hell bury you alive.

    55.

  • MELISSAHow long have we been around this guy? Every move, every line, every play. Ive seen it, over and over and over again.

(beat)Trust me, the only one going six feet under is him.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas stares at his desk and the PHOTOS laid out: KEVIN, MELISSA, DAVID, JACK, TOM, JIM, MATTHEW, VICTORIA. He stares, playing out the scenarios in his head. He puts Kevin and Melissas photo next to each other, moving the others to the side.

Glances at a small framed PHOTO on his desk of Alison.

He goes to his flat-screen. The four quadrants with live feeds into Kevins apartment. He zeros in on the bottom quadrant: Kevin sleeps in bed.

    INT. KEVIN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Kevin lies in bed facing away from the door. He turns over, still asleep. Nicholas stands in the doorway, staring down. Is this real? Kevins eyes shoot open. WHAM! Foot to the face.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

Nicholas continues to stare at the screen. Plotting.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DAWN

Through binoculars: Kevin leaves his apartment. Gets in his car and drives away.

    INT. KEVINS APARTMENT - DAWN

Nicholas, disheveled and two days behind on sleep, sifts through BILLS, COLLECTION and PAST DUE NOTICES. Looks around the place, hunting.

The floor boards CREAK and he freezes. STEP after STEP. Coming his direction. He quietly backs into the bathroom, but a different apartment door opens and closes. Exhale. He moves to the-

    BEDROOM

    56.

  • Searches through the mess of sheets, clothes and boxes. He tosses a pair of jeans out of the way and something HITS the wall.

He moves over and picks it up: EYE LINER.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

Kevin stands in front of the cameras with David, whos sporting crutches.

KEVINWe have our friend here, David, who works with young kids and wanted to come out today and show his support. Hes struggling, like all of us and he wants a voice in Washington. He wants someone to stand up and say I will represent you. I will speak for you.

(soft applause)And, let me be the first to say if Congressman Erickson is not that voice we will find another.

The CROWD behind Kevin CHEERS as David agreeably nods.

KEVIN (CONTD)We will continue looking until someone steps forward for the middle-class and says, I will fight for you... not Wall Street, not the banks, not Washington... for you.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - SAME

Nicholas stares at Kevin and David in the distance as they rally the troops in front of the cameras.

    INT. MATTHEWS OFFICE - DAY

Matthew sits behind his desk writing. A KNOCK on the door.

    MATTHEWCome in.

The door opens and Melissa enters.

MELISSAYou wanted to see me, sir?

    MATTHEWHave a seat.

    57.

  • Melissa sits. Matthew glances at the low-cut shirt.

    MATTHEW (CONTD)Wheres Nick?

MELISSAI dont know, sir. Like I said, Ive tried calling him over the past few days, but hes not picking up.

MATTHEWHow long has this been going on?

MELISSAJust recent. If I may, I think its the pressure of the bill. Seems to be getting to him.

    Matthew pauses in thought.

MATTHEWIll be candid with you and I need you to do the same.

(she nods)Ive seen this before - with others. Does he need help? Is it to that point?

Melissa stares at Matthew, thinking on her feet. She plays him to the beat, quickly changes direction.

MATTHEW (CONTD)I know you guys are close, but I need you to be honest with me.

She sifts in her seat as her eyes start to water.

MELISSAIm really sorry, sir. I know I should have come to you earlier. Its just...

(beat)...a few weeks back we were at a fundraiser for Congressman Stone and someone told me he was... in the bathroom, so I went in to get him and... he was on the floor.

Her eyes water as she sadly stares at Matthew.

He comes around and gives her a hug, caresses her back and slowly but surely slides his hand down to her ass.

    58.

  • MATTHEWIts okay. Its okay.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

    Jack jogs down the steps.

KEVIN (V.O.)Why do we care so much about the banks when they continue to hand out bonuses to their executives...

    EXT. JACKS AUDI - DAY

Jack gets in, revs up and pulls away.

KEVIN (V.O.)...while giving us higher interest, late fees, and repossession notices?

    INT. UNDERCOVER CAR - DAY

John maneuvers through traffic to keep up with the Audi.

KEVIN (V.O.)This country is falling apart and these are the people making it happen.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

The crowd continues around Kevin. David stands off to the side. REPORTERS/CAMERAS in front.

KEVINHistory is repeating itself and were turning a blind eye. Its time to look at the real culprits of this mess and stop passing it off to the ever responsible middle-class.

REPORTER 1 (O.S.)Mr. Sims, how do you respond to the most recent report of your financial activity?

    KEVIN(off-guard)

    Im sorry?

    59.

  • REPORTER 1 Theres a report just recently released about your finances, and many are wondering what your motives are as you stand up there and speak.

REPORTER 2Theyre asking whether youre really out here trying to get rid of debt that doesnt seem to be tied to the loss of your home.

Kevins face hardens as this has taken him by surprise.

KEVINIm not entirely sure what youre referring to, Judith, but I will say that most American debt at this point is directly tied to housing, in one way or another.

REPORTER 2 (O.S.)How long ago did you lose your home?

KEVINI dont really think that matters.

REPORTER 3 (O.S.)It says your credit card debt was accumulated over the past fours years. Isnt that after you lost your home?

Kevin shifts, starting to get uneasy. Throws out a nervous smile over a seething inside.

KEVINYes, and its also about the time I started my business. Which, I subsequently lost because of the economy.

REPORTER 4 (O.S.)Are you using your platform to try and get rid of your debt?

Kevin nervously glances around, starting to sweat.

REPORTER 5 (O.S.)Do you think thats right? Are you deceiving the American people?

    60.

  • KEVINThis isnt about me, its about everyone out there, who struggles every day. Wanting better. Wanting a voice. And, not finding it anywhere in this country.

Kevin quickly moves away as REPORTERS SHOUT questions.

    INT. PUBLIC TOILET - DAY

Kevin quickly locks the door and turns to the mirror in this tight, single space. Deep breath. Runs the water in the sink. Splash on the face. Breathe. Breathe. Takes a few pills out of his pocket and swallows. Scowls into the mirror, knowing exactly where that came from.

KEVIN Sure. Just didnt feel like going home.

    DAVIDPlenty of days like that.

KEVINYou seem to love what you do. Youve always been a teacher of some kind?

DAVIDNo, not always. B-b-but, I have always w-wanted to be one. What about you?

    62.

  • KEVINI dont know. I guess Im still trying to find my way.

    DAVIDYou d-d-dont have a family?

KEVINNo. My wife left me years ago.

    DAVIDIm sorry.

KEVINDont be. Sometimes its for the best. Gives you a new lease on life.

Kevin cracks open a fortune cookie.

DAVIDYour new lease... is the movement?

    KEVINYou could say that.

DAVIDD-d-do you think itll work? Do you think theyll really p-payattention?

Kevin turns the fortune around to David. It reads, The road ahead is prosperous.

KEVINI think they already are, David. Between you and me, Im meeting with Congressman Cain tomorrow and hopefully we can get him behind the movement. I think weve found our voice. Our way forward.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - STUDY - NIGHT

John sits in front of Nicholas desk. A PHOTO of Victoria and Jack in front.

    63.

  • JOHNIm sorry, Nick.

Nicholas gets up and pours a scotch. Takes his time.

NICHOLASDont be. This is Washington. Everyones in bed with everyone.

JOHNIs there something we can do?

(beat)If we go after Sims now--

NICHOLASThen hell walk. If we go after him, I lose, John. This is what he wants. The big bad lobbyist attacking the lowly protester. It would only rally the troops even more. Put this bill in even bigger danger of passing.

JOHNWe dont have a lot of time.

    Nicholas pauses in contemplation.

NICHOLASTheres something were not seeing. Theres something else here, John. There has to be. This protester, and Melissa. They arent the only ones. They cant be. Theyre not that good.

(beat)Theres someone pulling the strings from the top.

NICHOLASI dont know. But theyre close to home.

INT. NICHOLAS HOME - HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

    INT. UNKNOWN ROOM - NIGHT

Alison feels her way along the wall, attempting to find the door. A light comes on in another room as STEPS approach. She instantly freezes. Tip-toes back to the bed.

Kevin fights his way through, gritting his teeth the whole way.

JOURNALIST 2Can you tell us why you have twenty-five thousand in outstanding credit card debt?

JOURNALIST 3Do you plan to pay it back?

He gets to his car. Unfortunately for him, theres a BOOT on the front right tire.

    65.

  • KEVINShit!

    He kicks the tire.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - SAME

Nicholas stares at Kevin from down the street.

INT. JACKS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - DAY

Jack stands in front of a podium. Final touches of powder being applied.

    MOMENTS LATER

    Tape rolling.

JACKAfter much deliberation and many meetings late into the night I can say that while we support the merits of this bill we believe more ideas should come together before we definitively identify a single solution to the current ordeal facing the American people today.

(beat)We want to help the middle-class and we want them to thrive, but we also want them to receive the type of assistance that is long-term and not a bandaid for a broken arm.

Nicholas stands near the front of the room, ensuring a camera shot.

INT. JACKS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - LATER

Everyone cleared besides Jack next to his desk and Nicholas near the door.

    NICHOLAS(approaching)

    That went well.

    Jack glares back.

    NICHOLAS (CONTD)Youll thank me later.

    66.

  • JACKFuck you.

NICHOLASYou wont be saying that when youre re-elected.

JACKThen you better make sure those assholes on Wall Street make that happen.

NICHOLASYoull be well taken care of, Jack. You have my word.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DAY

Tom stands next to Kevin in front of a podium.

TOMThank you all for coming out. Recently, weve seen Congressman Erickson renege on his support for this housing bill and Im here to say that the middle-class now has a new voice in Washington in Tom Cain. Im not here for Wall Street, Im not here for Washington, Im here for you, the American people.

(soft applause)In the next few days we will take this fight to Washington. We will give them our voice and it will be heard.

(applause grows)We will push this bill as hard as we can and ensure the middle-class receives the necessary assistance, so needed at this time. Join me in sending a message to Washington.

    APPLAUSE erupts.

Nicholas, hat and jeans, stands behind the cameras, stoically looking on.

Moves to the closets. Listens. Silence. Nothing out of place. Perfection.

INT. HMA - NICHOLAS OFFICE - DAY

Nicholas sits at his desk, contemplating.

A KNOCK on his door draws his attention.

    NICHOLASCome in.

Melissa enters, shuts the door behind her. Sex appeal head-to-toe. Tension as both know the other knows, but neither can do, nor say anything about it.

MELISSAIve been trying to get a hold of you for days, Nick.

NICHOLASBeen a little busy. How about you?

MELISSABusy never ends in this town. What are you working on?

NICHOLASThe usual bullshit. Assholesthinking theyre going to one-up me. Maggots trying to feed on success theyll never have. Washington 101.

She gets close to him and touches his hand.

MELISSASounds frustrating. Maybe you need a little release?

She takes his hand and goes to put it up her skirt. For a second he goes along with it, but then pulls back. Rises and gets close to her.

    68.

  • NICHOLASNo, Im good. When they get what I have coming, thats all the release Ill ever need.

A long stare before... a KNOCK at the door ends the stand-off.

    INT. HMA - DAY

Nicholas moves through the busy halls.

INT. MATTHEW HOLLANDS OFFICE - DAY

Matthew stands behind his desk, staring back at a sitting Nicholas. He tries to pinpoint where to begin.

MATTHEWI had a meeting with the board.

    Nicholas stoically stares back.

MATTHEW (CONTD)Im assuming you know what the discussion was about?

    Nicholas couldnt care less.

MATTHEW (CONTD)Theres conversation around town. Many are wondering what the hell is going on. Whered the old Nick go? Handled it. Done. Under the rug. Good press galore. Plenty of green.

(beat)Then we start hearing about stuff at Stones fundraiser.

    NICHOLASWhat are you talking about?

MATTHEWYour extracurricular activities are getting in the way of the business, Nick.

    NICHOLASWhat extracurricular--

    69.

  • MATTHEWDont start this shit with me. Your leash is longer than most because youre good at what you do, but that doesnt mean youre the only one.

NICHOLASAre you serious? Thats your angle here? Thats how youre going to play this? Youre going to try and threaten me that youll find someone better?

    MATTHEWI may have to.

NICHOLASReally? Is that what this is about? Are you really saying this?

MATTHEWIm saying youre the only one standing in the way of your success. And, right now--

Nicholas rises out of his chair and leans forward.

NICHOLASNo, youre saying the board wants me out. Youre saying you dont have the sack to ante up for the guy whos been payin your bills since you got off your mothers tit and your father handed you a golden spoon so God damn big you couldnt even fit it in your mouth. Thats what youre saying.

Matthew, a little bruised, contemplates before...

MATTHEWWell, Im glad we cleared that up.

NICHOLASSo, am I. Because heres how I see it, Im either on your team burying everyone else, or Im with the guy across the street, burying you. Your choice.

Nicholas goes to walk out, but stops and turns around.

Matthew smiles, sensing an apology on the horizon.

    70.

  • NICHOLAS (CONTD)Oh yeah, and fuck you, Matt.

    INT. NICHOLAS MERCEDES - DUSK

    Nicholas races through the streets.

    EXT. THE CAPITAL - DUSK

Nicholas quickly jogs up the steps, shirt wrinkled, tie off and looking like shit.

INT. THE CAPITAL - MOMENTS LATER

    Nicholas power-walks through the halls.

INT. JACKS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - WAITING ROOM - DUSK

Nicholas barges in and heads right for the skinny Receptionist. No security in sight.

    NICHOLASI need to see, Jack.

    SKINNY RECEPTIONISTIm sorry, sir, but--

Nicholas plows right by her and heads for the door, swings it open.

INT. JACKS CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE - SAME

Nicholas goes to barge in, but is caught off guard as he stares at Jacks desk.

Jack sits behind. Kevin in front.

    Nicholas stares, speechless.

    JACKSure, come on in, Nick.

    NICHOLASWhat the hell is this?

JACKNicholas Moore, Kevin Sims. I dont believe youve met.

KEVINNo, I dont believe we have. Officially.

Kevin walks over and extends his hand to shake.

    71.

  • Nicholas walks right by him and heads for Jack.

NICHOLASWhy are you talking to this guy?

    JACKHe requested a meeting.

    NICHOLASFor what?

JACKNot that its any of your business. But, he wanted to know why I wouldnt back the bill.

    NICHOLASWhat did you tell him?

KEVIN (O.S.)He said that he was waiting for something better to come along. I respect that.

Nicholas stares at Jack. Seems all that was said.

    JACKWhat do you need, Nick?

    NICHOLASWe need to talk. Alone.

KEVINThats okay. I think were done here anyway. Thank you for your time, Congressman.

Jack nods and Kevin makes his way out.

Nicholas follows him to the door and SLAMS IT SHUT.

    Turns back to Jack.

JACKWhat the fuck is your problem? You barge into my office again like you own the place and were going to have issues.

NICHOLASWhat the fuck was that? And, dont give me Washington bullshit.

    72.

  • JACK I dont know what youre talking about, Nick. Hes the opposition. He wanted a meeting. You always meet with the opposition to say youve met, right? This is the Washington bullshit.

Nicholas reads him. Cant pick up anything.

    NICHOLASWhat else?

JACKI dont know what else youre looking for, Nick. But, you wont find it here.

NICHOLASThis bill cant pass, Jack. You need to promise me it wont pass. Right now, promise me.

JACK It doesnt even have a third of the majority it would need, Nick. This thing is six feet under and it hasnt even come to the floor. All this bullshit... all this dance everyones doing, jumping up in front of cameras for the fuckingmiddle-class. Its a God damn show. Its fifteen minutes. A CNNsound bite. You think these assholes give a shit about the middle-class? They give a shitabout themselves. Period.

Nicholas nods, satisfied with the response.

JACK (CONTD)Now get a grip. And, calm the fuckdown before you fall off the rai
