Baptism: Parents should attend a Baptismal Preparation Class (held the first Sunday of each month at 12:30pm in the school library). Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. The following fasting and abstinence regulations are observed: • Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday,

and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older.

• Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 years. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal on those days. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but solid foods between meals is not permitted.

• The special Paschal fast and abstinence are observed on Good Friday and, where possible, on Holy Saturday. On these days, Christians prepare themselves by these disciplines in anticipation of the renewal of their baptismal commitment on Easter.

• From its earliest days, the Church has urged the baptized and the catechumens to observe the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer as preparation for the celebration of Easter. Failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious, but failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

• The Church encourages everyone to attend weekday Mass, practice self-imposed times of fasting, and generosity to local, national and worldwide programs of sharing during Lent.

During Lent why do we. . . ? The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) is the binding and authoritative document which governs every aspect of how Holy Mass is offered. This brief article seeks to answer several common questions about some of the practices we observe during Lent.

• Why do we not sing the Gloria or “Alleluia” during Lent? Paragraphs 53 and 62 both state that the Gloria and Alleluia are sung “on Sundays outside of Lent”.

• Paragraph 305 states, “Moderation should be observed in the decoration of the altar. During Lent it is forbidden for the altar to be decorated with flowers. Exceptions, however, are Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts. Floral decoration should always show moderation and arranged around the altar rather than on the altar (table/high altar).”

• Paragraph 313 governs the use of the organ and other suitable instruments. “ In Lent the playing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only in order to support the singing. Exceptions, however, are Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts.”

And so, as we begin this holy season with its marked austerity, may we enter into the Lenten journey with a deepened understanding of how and why we pray the Mass as we do.

ASH IN CHURCH

Silence in Lent? What does it really mean? Is the Church telling us that Lent is a time to be quiet, or to be reverent? Is the common theme here that Lent is the time to strip everything away and immerse ourselves in nothing but chant? This is far from the truth. Many think that Lent is the time to do chant with no rhyme or reason to it. The Church upholds Gregorian Chant as her primary force of Liturgical Music, year round. Yes, Lent is a time of penitence, reflection and silence.

What is the season of Lent? People say things like: “Lent is the six week period before Easter Sunday.” Yes and no. Lent is actually a time of preparation, a time of longing, that period from the First Sunday of Lent, to the Paschal Triduum of Our Lord Jesus Christ which begins on Holy Thursday. Why do we observe this respective silence during Lent? Is it what the priest wants to do? No. Does the organist need a break and decide to play less? No. This is what the Church wants us to do. We are instructed by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal to observe this respective silence and stripping away of all things joyful and comforting.

Point 313 in the General Instruction (GIRM) states that: “In Advent the organ and other musical instruments should be used with a moderation that is consistent with the season’s character and does not anticipate the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord. In Lent the playing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only to support the singing. Exceptions are Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts."

Why this directive? Why this season of Lent? Again, Lent is a time to prepare our hearts and minds anew. It’s a time to reflect, a time to pray, and a time to show repentance for our sins and spend quiet time with God. During the Lenten season we will be introducing the offertory antiphon into our liturgy, to allow for another acclamation to be sung before we sing our hymn together, similar to the Communion Antiphon. The cantor will intone the response to allow you to hear it. Many of you are also familiar with the simple and beautiful Taize refrains such as “Jesus, remember me.” We will also be singing a few of those together. Throughout this upcoming Lenten season, let us return our hearts to God, be mindful in prayer, and ask our Lord for forgiveness where we have done Him wrong.

Jim McCullough, Adult Catechesis, is offering a Sunday morning Bible Study for interested adults. It meets from 10:30-11:30 AM while our parish Religious Education program is in session. Bring your own

Church Office Move Postponed Due to construction delays, the church office move has been postponed until the week of March 2nd.

Parish Life Center News It is hoped that the Parish Life Center will be completed at the end of February and scheduling of the spaces will take place once we are moved and settled into the new location. Also, the Banquet Hall will not likely be ready when we move.

A Letter from Very Reverend Mauricio W. West

Dear Father Kowalski,

The theme of the 2015 Diocese Support Appeal is Sharing God’s Gifts. When we share God’s gifts of treasure to make our annual contribution to the DSA, we join with all our sisters and brothers in Christ throughout the diocese to do the Lord’s work – work that no one individual or parish can do alone.

I am deeply appreciative of your faithful service to the people of western North Carolina and aware of the many demands already placed on your resources, yet it is important to recognize the grown annual needs of DSA supported agencies and the great work done throughout our diocese.

The goal for the 2015 DSA is $5,120,000, which represents an increase of 4% over 2014, which was unchanged from the previous year. We kept the DSA goal flat from 2013 to 2014 in light of the Forward in Faith, Hope and Love campaign; but the needs of the DSA supported ministries have not remained flat. By comparison, the total of all parish assessment bases (offertory less 25% of school subsidy) increased 7.4% over the past two years. If the DSA target for your parish increased over the last two years by 4% or more, it is because your parish offertory – reduced by 25% of your school subsidy payments – increased more than the diocesan average of 7.4%. Conversely, if the DSA target for your parish increased less than 4% or if it decreased, it is because the change in your parish assessment base was less than the average increase for the diocese.

Looking back over the last seven years, the DSA goal has increased 15% from $4,440,000 in 2008; an annual increase of approximately 2%. By comparison, parish offertories have increased 23% over the same period. Please be assured that we are working very hard to contain cost increased in our ministry budget to ensure that increases in the DSA goal are less than increases in diocesan offertory.

The past support you have given to the DSA is gratifying. I ask your continued assistance as we make every effort to meet the ever-increasing needs of diocesan agencies and ministries. Confident that together we can look beyond the needs of our individual parish communities an reach our DSA goal, I ask you to personally pledge your support for this Appeal. Our own pledges will be credited to the parishes where we reside or serve.

I encourage you to use the resources of the Development Office to enhance your stewardship efforts and to promote the DSA in your parish.

Again, please accept my sincere thanks for all you do to serve the People of God in your parish community. May God continue to bless you and your parishioners throughout this New Year.

Women’s Club Applebee’s Flap Jack Fundraiser

OLG family and friends are invited to the Women’s Club Applebee’s Flap Jack Fundraiser. The breakfast will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Applebee’s on Battleground Rd. Ticket price for adults is $7 per plate - $4 for children 12 & under – maximum of $25 per family. The Women’s Club will be selling tickets after the Masses on the weekend of March 7th and 8th.

Which Came First? The Donuts or the Fellowship?

The Pastoral Council and our Priests have been in a fruitful discussion borne out of several complaints regarding the recent lack of choice of the type of donuts served at what is called Donut Sunday.

These complaints, while focusing on the lack of what some view to be a suitable variety of donuts, began a discussion as to the history of Donut Sunday as well as what it’s original purpose was, and what it has become today. All of this I think is a good thing!

With that in mind, Donut Sunday has a new email address [email protected]. We would like to solicit reasons on the purpose of Donut Sunday as well as what the original purpose was, etc. What should be the inspiration for Donut Sunday?

Please be sure to include your name in your email. And remember, any email replies may be published in the bulletin to help in our conversation, so please keep that in mind as you reply. As the Pastoral Council and the Fathers continue this discussion, please ask yourselves, “What should be the inspiration for Donut Sunday?” Is it just about the donuts, or is it about something more? Emergency Responders’ Awards Dinner The Knights of Columbus invite you to join them in honoring Emergency Responders. They will present awards to the nominated recipients from Greensboro Police Dept, Greensboro Fire Dept, Guilford County Sheriffs Dept and Guilford County EMS. This is their way of honoring those that protect and serve us. An Italian dinner prepared by Chef Tony Pupello will be held on Saturday, February 28th, 2015 at the KofC Hall, 2780 Horse Pen Creek Road, Greensboro at 6:30PM. Carolina Catholic Chorale to present Adoramus Te! On Friday, March 6th, Our Lady of Grace will welcome the Carolina Catholic Chorale at 7:30 PM for their Lenten presentation: Adoramus Te. This presentation is a series of choral settings to accompany the Stations of the Cross based on "We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you for by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world."

The Chorale is under the direction of Tom Savoy, Director of Music at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Charlotte NC and is the Artistic and Founding Director of the Carolina Catholic Chorale, based in Charlotte.

OLG’s New Teen Lenten Retreat Saturday, March 7th, 10:00 AM-6:00 PM

New Parish Life Center This year, I am happy to announce that OLG will launch its new teen retreat, Coraggio (“Courage,” in Italian). It will be held in the new parish life center at our church! (Pending completion!)

Our CORAGGIO retreat will immerse teens in the presence of Christ and His call to holiness. An engaging combination of speakers, small groups, prayer, reflection, Eucharistic Adoration, sacramental availability, music, and multi-media presentations will help them to become more attuned to the voice of God in their lives.

This retreat is the highlight of our Decision Point Confirmation Preparation program. The retreat is also open to high school teens from our parish and beyond. Register today!

Join St. Paul the Apostle's Pre-school Co-op! KINGDOM Kids! Registration is now open for St. Paul the Apostle’s pre-school co-op! Students (ages 3-5) meet weekly in a designated classroom at St. Paul the Apostle on Mondays and Wednesdays (option Fridays for rising kindergartners) from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Mothers rotate teaching and assisting once a month, and have time to run errands on the other days. Children grow spiritually, intellectually, socially and emotionally. Mothers benefit from a support network and involvement in their children's early development and growth. Tuition is $50 for the year. Senior Games & Silver Arts! It’s time again for the Greater Greensboro Senior Games and Silver Arts program, conducted annually through our local Smith Senior Center (2401 Fairview Street) and sponsored by the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services. Join us on April 7th for the physical fitness advantage, fun, socializing and opportunity to share your creative arts and crafts accomplishments. Blessing of Throats-During the Feast of St. Blaise on February 3rd, Father Kowalski and Father Barone took the time to bless each one of Our Lady of Grace School's students that day - a

wonderful thing during cold and flu season!

On February 6th, Our Lady of Grace School students celebrated 100 days of school with lots of fun activities! Students created art work to decorate their classrooms in preparation for the festivities.

Our Lady of Grace School's pre-kindergarten class went to the Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus recently. Meeting a clown up close made it a truly special day!

If you haven't dropped by the school recently, please make a point to do so soon! Student-made artwork is covering our walls! We have pottery that our students have created that is on display in the lobby across from the library. This year's pottery project allows our students to create pottery made with North Carolina clay and based on traditions native to the state. OLG student

pottery work is from a 2014-15 Teacher Art Grant from ArtsGreensboro, so we want to thank them!

Our students have taken time to write why they love OLG School and those works are hung on our school's walls, along with beautiful artwork that adorns the cafeteria. We are so grateful to Margene Patrick and Jenny Schultz, our art teachers for their hard work. Other teachers have also set out examples of their classroom work, so take a minute to see all the great things going on in our school daily.

I also want to thank OLG parent Carla Murphy for her hard work on our teachers lounge! Stop by to see the beautiful painting that she created of our logo on the wall. Mrs. Murphy and Meg O'Brien, another OLG parent, also created beautiful pictures for the office using our mission statement and motto as well. We are blessed with many talented parents and are so grateful that they chose to share their gifts in support of our school!.

OLG's spring auction theme is "Masquerade!" this year and will be held off-site at downtown Greensboro's Kress Terrace on Friday, April 24th. This is a great opportunity to have a very fun night out while also supporting Catholic education. Watch for more information soon. Money raised will help us continue to upgrade our technological offerings for our students. We look forward to adding more iPads soon!

As I continue to learn more about our wonderful school, I am continually amazed by the alumni who return to OLG with their own children, the parishioners who volunteer not because they have a child in our school but because they believe educating children is an important mission of our church and by the parents who step up to support our school in so many different ways. Marketing & Admissions Director Position Opening at OLG School

Karen Hornfeck, our marketing and admissions director, will be leaving OLG on February 20th to accept a position at the Center for Creative Leadership. Karen has been a parent here for many years and has been on staff for almost 5 years. She has helped us market all the wonderful things taking place here at OLG and has represented us well over the years. She will be missed but we look forward to continuing to see her around campus as a parent.

We will begin accepting resumes for the Marketing and Admissions position immediately. This position includes media buying, developing marketing communications materials, monitoring OLG's online profile, conducting open houses and personalized tours, and tracking incoming admissions.
