during the month of October!
Fall is well underway and the leaves are falling. Winter is not
far away.
Beginning of the School Year It has been an excellent start to
the school year. We started our
year with approximately 65 new
students and we are excited to
welcome them to Heart River. Our
school district continues to use
Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop to
help your children make progress
towards mastery of the North
Dakota State ELA Standards. Your
children will continue to use the
Eureka Math Curriculum to ad-
dress grade level math standards.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People: Habit #2 Begin with the End in Mind
Heart River Elementary is a school which
believes in its community. It ‘s purpose is
to help develop our students academically, socially and emotionally. Students in to-
day’s society need to be prepared as best as they can. Even though our students are
in elementary, our goal is to work towards
college and career readiness! At Heart River, we believe in our students and our
community.
Mission Statement
We provide all students with skills and re-
sources in a safe environment for lifelong
learning.
Vision Statement
All Heart River Elementary students will reach
their maximum potential to be effective citi-

Our Parent Advisory Council will
meet on October 16, 2019 at 12:00
Noon. Our PAC meets on the third
Wednesday of each month at 12:00
noon. Meetings last approximately
one hour. We invite and encour-
age Heart River parents to grab
your lunch from the lunch room
and join us as we discuss events
and happenings at HR as well as
planning for our school.
Many of our students take advantage of our hot lunch program. Many of
our students already have a negative
balance on their accounts. At $2.55
per lunch, it doesn’t take long for
deposited money to be used up. Families can apply for free and re-
duced status for help during times of
crisis. Forms are available in the
office or you can request one from
Mrs. Penny. Non-qualifying stu-
dents and students with a reduced
status MUST keep up with their
balances. Mrs. Penny makes phone
calls to provide updates for you. At
$-10.00. Students are required to bring a cold lunch from home once
they reach $-50.00. Please do not
let a negative balance build up as the
school does not have the funds to pay
for youchild(ren)’s balances
Schedules
Elementary schools in the Dickinson Public School system use Professional Learning Communities(PLC) to provide systemic pro-fessional development implementation through the Super-block collaboration time. In a block schedule, content areas are “blocked” together to provide continuous, extended instruction. English Language Arts (reading and grammar), math and science and social studies meet for a minimum of 40 minutes. This allows teachers to work on in-depth instruction with your children. Superb-lock is an 80 minute period during which time the teachers collaborate together to discuss, plan and evaluate instruction. Each grade level has a different Superblock day. On Superblock days, students go to keyboarding,
and the library, physical education and music.
In Superblock teachers address:
1. What is it that we want students to learn?
2. How will we know when students have learned it?
3. How will we respond when students do not learn?
4. How will we respond when students have already learned?
Each grade level has a different Superblock day.

Day 2-2nd grade
Day 3-3rd grade
Day 4-4th grade

Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as
Halloween is Thursday, October 31, 2019. Students are able to wear costumes to school, using the Storybook Character Theme. Please do not send accessories for the costumes to school. Safe practices to follow for Hal-loween Trick or Treating include:
safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes.
Check all treats before eating.
Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emer-gency or become lost.
Week, October 7-11, 2019.. The
theme this year is
“Every Hero Wears a
Cape.
Plan and Practice Your
Escape!” Students from the community are
also able to ride on a fire truck!
On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, @
5:00 PM, the fire truck will be at
College Park, 1400 Block of 2nd
Street West (by the BAC) from
5:00-dusk. Children can ride the
fire truck if their parent or guardi-
an is present. Fire can be pre-
vented through education and
careful use.
Smokey the Bear, the mascot for
Wildfire Prevention, was a real
bear found high in a tree in the
mountains near Ruidoso, New Mexi-
co. Found high up in a tree in 1950
Smokey the Bear was just a cub.
Due to the fire, he
was unable to be
reunited with his
mother and was
adopted by the
National Forest
Service as a way to make an im-
pact upon children in the United
States.
October is Fire Prevention month,
and is also a great time to check
the batteries on your smoke
alarms and carbon monoxide de-
tectors. Various activities will be
sponsored by the Dickinson Fire
Department during Fire Prevention

Attendance Matters Attached to our newsletter is interesting information which shows how much instructional time a child loses when they miss school.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IS
CRITICAL TO YOUR CHILD’S SUCCESS!
When your child misses school, that instructional time cannot be restored. Although your child will receive make-up work, the opportunity for student in-teractive learning is lost. Please ensure your child is in school every day all day!
The State of North Dakota
requires proof of required
immunizations be provided to
the school in which your child
attends. North Dakota Adminis-
trative Rule 33-06-05-01, 5
(b),
During the 2018-19 school
year, Heart River had an im-
munization report of 94%.
This means that most, but not
all, of our students had their
immunization records in place.
Mrs. Wyckoff is tasked with
contacting parents to provide
the required documentation.
This can be frustrating be-
cause she is unable to access
some of the students’ rec-
ords. The State then tags
these missing records to our
school. We want 100% this
school year. Please help us
get that by getting the re-
quired immunizations as soon
as possible and providing your
child’s records.
Our 2019-20 Watch D.O.G.S kick-off was successful with 17 new
dads and their children attending the event and eating lots of pizza!
We had a few “old DOGS” join us as
well! Woof! Our Watch D.O.G.S have been at
school and have been actively involved in our daily activities with
many hours volunteered last
school year. The Watch D.O.G.S initiative joins the belief that dads
(male figures) have a tremendous impact on the development of our
children. Combining the need for a
positive role model with a second layer of security, the Watch
D.O.G.S provide a “dad” who vol-unteers to be at school. Coordi-
nated by Mr. Pat Knipp, the pro-
gram is already up and the “DOGS” are running.

Principal’s Message:
The first month of school has flown by and students
are in the routine of the school day and know what
needs to be done. Each is working hard with differ-
ent incentives offered for positive behaviors.
We continue to work on providing for our students’
safety .
Supervisors wear brightly colored vests for
easy identification .
Supervisors are on duty in the morning, re-
cess and afterschool.
At lunch time, supervisors monitor the same
grade level on a daily basis. This creates con-
sistency and helps the students to know and
develop a relationship with our supervisors.
We have supervision in the hallways after-
school.
We continue to provide street crossing for
students/adults afterschool and ask for your
consideration and attention when a supervisor
is crossing students.
School
Supervisors have been taught how
to cross students from one side of
the street to the other.
Supervisors crossing students use
their whistle and hand held stop
sign to stop cars.
Students have been asked to cross
only with the supervisor.
Additionally, our Watch D.O.G.S. will be
at school monitoring the hallways, build-
ing perimeter and interacting with our
students at lunch and at recess. sc

Happy October! Our career day was a success and we are going to have a wonderful October with several events. October is Bullying Prevention Month so we will be focusing on kindness and bullying prevention in our lessons. Mrs. Seaks and I are switching our Coffee and Conversation dates to the first Friday of the month so our second Coffee and Conversation of the year will be on October 4th and we will be explaining the differ-ence between mean, rude, and bullying. We hope that you will be able to join us! Red Ribbon Week is the last week of October and the students will be learning about drug prevention and safe prac-tices with harmful chemicals from our local police department. Our dress up days theme is “Send a message: My dreams are too bright for drugs” so we will be following a bright rainbow theme that week. Monday-wear purple, Tuesday-wear blue, Wednesday-wear green, Thursday-wear orange or your Halloween costume, and Friday-wear red. We are using the Bloomz communication program schoolwide this year and I have created a school counseling program account in it. This account is only for sending out information about pertinent events coming up or positive notes about your child(ren). If you would like to discuss a concern or offer some information about your child(ren), please call me at 701-456-0012. To sign up for my Bloomz account please text @KCW7Y8 to 1-858-BLOOMZ1 (1-858-256-6691) to receive 1-way text messages. If you would like 2-way com-munication please download the app and enter KCW7Y8 when prompted to add a class. If you have any questions about the counseling program or how I can help please feel free to call me at 701-456-0012.
