Humane society of sonoma county community Veterinary clinicAt the Humane Society of Sonoma County, we believe the best place for pets is with

the families who love them. The goal of our Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC) is to provide compassionate veterinary care in a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment for pets

of low-income residents of Sonoma County. Our CVC will be open one day a week starting on February 11th at our Highway 12

West campus in Santa Rosa. Services will be offered on a sliding scale for clients who can provide proof of participation in assistance programs such as CalFresh/Food Stamp, WIC or

Medical, or by verifying that their household income does not exceed “very low income” limitations by household size, as established by the California Department of

Housing and Community Development for Sonoma County. Services include veterinary exams and basic care such as vaccines, flea treatment,

deworming and microchips, as well as diagnostics, humane euthanasia, urgent care and anesthetic procedures, including dentistry and surgeries.

reglas Para Presentar una declaración

Existen reglas muy específicas sobre cuando tiene que presentar una declaración de nombre ficticio y cuando no lo tiene que hacer. If corporations and limited liability corporations are only using their actual registered name, then they do not need to file fictitious business statements but those using a different name in the course of their business also must file.

Gates and you open a sole proprietorship known as “Bill’s Software” in San Francisco, you need to file a fictitious business statement in City Hall, San Francisco, which lets the government

and the public know that Bill’s Software belongs to you. Likewise, if one is a corporation named, say, “Microsoft”, but it wants to do business using the name “Bill’s Software,” then it must file a fictitious business statement telling the world that this corporation is using that trade name.

This name is then referred to by the phrase “doing business as” for example, Bill Gates doing business as Bill’s Software, or in the case of a corporation, “Microsoft dba Bill’s Software”.

rules for filingThere are very specific rules for when you

need to file a fictitious business statement and when you do not. If you use your entire first and last name, “Bill Gates’ Software”, then you do not need to file. If you use only your first name or initials, like “B.G. Software”, then you have to file. If you have a partnership using the last names of the partners, let’s say “Gates and Jobs Computer Equipment”, there’s no need to file. However, if it’s any other partnership name, even one using the first names – such as “Bill and Steve’s Computers” — then it will be required to file.

la persona del mes, Roberto Cervantes, es uno de los mejores sonideros en el Con-dado de sonoma, un individuo creativo, artista gráfico, constructor de casas de muñeca y, lo más importante, es un gran padre que se queda en casa.sonidero

Quizá el mejor de los atributos de Cervantes es ser sonidero. Cuando le pregunté como sucedió éso, contó: “Cuando era niño, cada miembro de mi familia estaba interesado en un diferente tipo de música, pero a mi me gustaba la variedad de ritmos: Tejana, oldies, country, disco, rock, nueva ola, funk y baladas. Mi trabajo era coleccionar la música de la familia y tocársela. Con el tiempo, grabé sus canciones en cintas y luego las pasé a CDs, y me empezaron a llamar Sonidero. Me gustó tanto el título que lo tomé en serio. Me dediqué tanto al sonido que mi primer trabajo pagado fue a la edad de 16 años”.

“Ese primer trabajo fue en una boda en en salón Grange de Sebastopol”, dijo. “Tenía platos que se manejaban con bandas, una mezcladora barata y el amplificador de guitarra de mi papa”, dijo riéndose. Agregó: “Estaba algo nervioso al principio, pero con mi familia allí, el evento salió bien. Camino a casa, pensé que si iba a seguir la carrera de sonidero, necesitaba buen equipo y una buena selección de música.

Además de necesitar equipo, Cervantes necesitaba tarjetas de presentación. Relató con risa lo que pasó al obtener sus tarjetas: “Las había mandado hacer en una imprenta al otro lado de la calle de la Escuela Preparatoria Santa Rosa, donde estudiaba. Teníamos prohibido salir, pero estaba yo tan ancioso de recogerlas que salí durante el recreo de la mañana. ¿Quién me vió al regresar? El Sr. Eugenio Mijares, Oficial de Asistencia”. Sacudió la cabeza, sonrió y continuó su relato de lo que dijo el oficial Mijares cuando miró las tarjetas: “Muy bien, Cervantes. Ahora, aquí está tu pase para quedarte en detención después de clases, por haber cruzado la calle en horas indebidas”.

Las presentaciones públicas de Roberto siguieron en desarrollo y se volvió un “Sonidero de formato abierto”, lo que quería decir que no se comprometía a hacer trabajo para un grupo o una estación de radio. Trabajaba haciendo una variedad de anuncios comerciales para eventos en los que el trabajaba. Su voz en

los años 1990 y a principios del 2000 se oía en varias estaciones locales de radio. A veces, Cervantes anunciaba en la Estación Bilingúe KBBF.

¿Dónde encuentra uno a Cervantes y su sonido? Para empezar, es el principal proveedor de música en en verano, en el centro de Santa Rosa, Mercado al aire libre. Todo el año pone el sonido los jueves en Spancky’s, para universitarios. También está a cargo de un foro en la celebración del Cinco de Mayo en Roseland, donde recibe y presenta a cantantes individuales.

Otros lugares donde Cervantes pone sonido son Sally Tomatoes, D’Argenzio y la Taberna del Valle del Rincón. Orgullosamente, comparte: “Sigo haciendo presentaciones en varios lugares, pero también trabajo en bodas y otras ocasiones. Por eso en el Año 2010, Roberto Cervantes recibió los premios de Mejor Sonidero Bohemio y del Norte de la Bahía.

Además de ser sonidero, Cervantes es feliz siendo miembro de un grupo que organiza

programas del buen humor en el Norte de la Bahía. El está a cargo de poner el sonido para los participantes.

Acerca de proveer música y foro para comediantes, Roberto afirma: “Disfruto de trabajar con unos de los más intrigantes, creativos e incondicionales miembros de nuestra comunidad”.

creatiVidadMi primer encuentro con la creatividad

de Roberto fue en la Escuela Preparatria Santa Rosa, donde el era un miembro y yo la consejera de la Organización de Estudiantes Mexico-Americanos (OEMA). El gobierno estudiantil estaba patrocinando un concurso de carros alegóricos para la fiesta de “Bienvenida”. Con imaginación y paciencia, bajo su dirección, cambiaron un automóvil a pantera. Primero hizo la cabeza, la pinto y la puso sobre el cofre del Escort negro de Cheli; luego agregó las piernas y patas a las llantas; por ultimo, OEMA hizo la cola larga. Claro, la pantera ganó el primer lugar aquel día. Como resultado, el supervisor del Gobierno

Estudiantil, Sr. Aubrey Gray, invitó a Cervantes a que participara en ese grupo y hasta le obsequió un suéter con las siglas del grupo. Después, el Sr. Gray, viendo que Roberto tenía interés en el arte, lo llevó al Instituto de Arte en Oakland, con la posibilidad de inscribirse, aunque la idea no se llevó a cabo.

Otra expresión de creatividad se aprecia en las camisetas del Cinco de Mayo. Cervantes trabaja con los organizadores del festival para dibujar el logo y poner la información en anuncios. Explicó como aprendió a hacerlos: “De 1993 al año 2000, trabajé para una imprenta llamada Lifeforms. Esa experiencia me permitió descubrir mi interés en el arte gráfico”.

Perhaps Cervantes’ greatest attribute is being a disc jockey. When asked how did that come about, he related: “When I was a child, each member of my family liked a different type of music, but I enjoyed the variety of rhythms: ‘Tejano’ (from Texas), oldies, country, disco, rock, new wave, funk and ballads. My job was to collect the family’s music and play it for them. Eventually, I recorded their songs in tapes and later changed the music to CD’s, and they started calling me DJ. I liked the title so much that I took it seriously, and became a DJ. Such was my dedication, my first paid job was at the age of 16.”

“That first paid job was at a wedding in the Sebastopol Grange Hall,” he said. “I had belt-driving turntables, a cheap mixer and my dad’s guitar amp as my speaker,” he laughed. Then, he added: “I was a little nervous at first, but with my family around, it turned out to be a fun event. On my way home, I thought that if I was going to pursue disc jockeying as a career, I needed good equipment and to have an up-to-date music selection.

In addition to needing equipment, Cervantes needed business cards. He related with laughter the outcome of obtaining his business cards: “I had them made in a printing company across from Santa Rosa High School, where I was a student. We had closed campus, but I was so excited about picking them up that I crossed the street during a morning recess. Who would see me upon return? Mr. Eugene Mijares, Truant Officer.” He shook his head, smiled and continued to share what Mr. Mijares said when he saw the business cards: “Great, Cervantes! Here’s your slip for detention after school, for crossing the street during school hours.”

Rob’s public appearances began to develop, and he became an “open format DJ,” which meant that he did not commit to do work for one group or radio station only, but he did commercials for them or for the events in which he would be working. His voice-overs or ads in the 1990’s and early 2000’s were played in several local radio stations. At times, Cervantes did announcements in the local Bilingual Radio Station, KBBF, as well.

Where does one find Rob Disc jockeying? To start, he is the main music provider, during the summer, in downtown Santa Rosa Wednesday Night Market. Throughout the year, Cervantes is the DJ for Spancky’s Thursday College Night. He is also in charge of a stage during the Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Roseland, where he welcomes and presents individual singers.

Other places where he often supplies music and sound equipment are Sally Tomatoes, D’Argenzio and Rincon Valley Taproom. Proudly, he shares: “I continue to create shows for many venues today, while I still DJ in weddings and other special occasions. No wonder in the Year 2010, Robert Cervantes received the Bohemian and North Bay Best DJ Music Awards.

In addition to disc jockeying, Cervantes takes joy in being part of a group who organizes stand-up comedy throughout the North Bay. Rob is in charge of setting

About providing music and a stage for comedians, Rob affirms: “I enjoy working with some of the most intriguing, creative and upmost whole-hearted members of our community.”

creatiVityMy first encounter with Robert’s creativity

was at Santa Rosa High School, where he was a member and I was advisor for the Mexican-American Youth Organization (MAYO). Student Government was sponsor-ing a competition for the best float of the homecoming events. Under the leadership of Cervantes, a car was turned into a panther. With imagination and patience, he made and painted the head out of cardboard and placed it on the hood; then he came up with the feet and paws and attached them to the wheels of Cheli’s black Escort; lastly, MAYO students invented the long tail. Of course, the panther won first place that day. As a result, Cervantes was invited to take part in student government, and he received a “Letterman sweater.” Later, Mr. Aubrey Gray, Student Government Supervisor, seeing the art potential in Rob, took him to the Oakland Art Institute, with the possibility of enrolling there, although the idea did not materialize.

Another instance of creativity has to do with Cinco de Mayo T-shirts. Cervantes works with organizers to come up with the logo and information for such celebration every year. He also does the posters. He explains how he gained his knowledge about logos and posters: “From 1993 to year 2000, I worked for a printing company called Lifeforms. That experience allowed me to discover my interest in graphic art.”

2018 Sonoma County Fair, displaying a First Prize ribbon. How did that come about? Cervantes relates with a sense of emotion: “It was a shell with plywood walls, that my grandfather built with the idea that, some day, it would be for a granddaughter or a great-granddaughter, but he didn’t finished it.” He took a deep breath and continued: “It ended up in storage for many years. It was about to be thrown away, and I decided to finish it instead.” He sighed and went on: “Taking over the project was a challenge, but it was also an exciting and fascinating type of art. I figured my daughter and I could work on it together. We finished it, and I entered it in the Sonoma County Fair for others to see and enjoy. Surprisingly, it won First Place.” He looked into space as he added: “Its completion was a dedication and closure to my grandfather’s vision. It ended up being for my daughter.”

Cervantes tells about the small town around his house: “Motivated by the first dollhouse, I built a second one from scratch. It’s a beautiful yellow Victorian style. The third one was a request to finish what a friend had started. The next one needed an interior job, and I finished it for another friend. And there are others being built or renovated. Except for the first one, the others will go to their original owners or to my nieces. Meantime, my daughter loves having them to herself.”

Who is the young lady mentioned con- tinuously in Cervantes life? It’s his four-year old daughter named Carmen Liliana. He said about her, “She is my legacy. Fatherhood is my latest adventure. She is my joy, someone whom I can teach good manners, kindness, selflessness and the good ways of life.” With much pride, he emphasized: “On weekdays, I’m a single, stay-home father, my favorite time of the week.”

community actiVitiesDJ Cervantes is a member of the follow-

ing organizations, for which he mainly provides logos, posters and is the sound technician: Peggy Sue Classic Car Show and Santa Rosa Women’s March. In the year 2000, he joined a team of producers to create the California Junior Miss Pageant, which takes place in Rohnert Park.

What do you get out of your involvement in community activities? Cervantes was asked, and he replied: “Experience…I gain experience.” Then he continued: “The way I see it, my community has helped me find and develop my skills, my worth, the ability to be social with everyone and everywhere. Being active is a way to give back and help others gain the same experience that they can use in the future.”

Indeed, Robert has passed on his passion for Disc Jockeying and his knowledge in graphic arts to younger generations, such as those attending the Young Men’s Christian Association and Chops—a community center for youth, places where he has held paid positions.

parents—Rufino Cervantes and Gloria Jean Lemay Puentes—who came from Texas to work in the fields in Healdsburg. They picked apples, figs and grapes.

His parents encouraged the children to speak English only because of the discrimination they experienced when they spoke Spanish. Then, it happened that in Sonoma County, those who could speak English and Spanish had better opportunities in obtaining jobs away from the fields. Mrs. Puentes, for example, was hired by the Healdsburg School District as an assistant to the hygienist. Things were working out well, so the family moved to Santa Rosa.

As mentioned, Rob attended Santa Rosa High School, and he wanted to share an unforgettable experience about the day of his graduation: “I was working for Acapulco Restaurant, I had notified the personnel manager of my graduation, and she still scheduled me to work that day. I called that morning to explain how important graduation was for me, and her answer was: ‘Oh, well!’ So, I went to the ceremony, and with my cap and gown on, I showed up to bus tables and wash dishes afterwards.” That shows how Cervantes takes his commitments and responsibilities, personal and professional, seriously.

en exhibición en la Feria 2018 del Condado de Sonoma, luciendo un listón de Primer Lugar. ¿Cómo sucedió éso? Roberto nos ex-plicó con algo de emoción: “Era una cáscara de madera que mi abuelito construyó, con la idea de que algún día, sería una casita para una de sus nietas o bisnietas, pero no la ter- minó”. Respiró profundamente y continuó: “Estuvo guardada entre otras cosas viejas por muchos años. Ya la iban a tirar y yo de- cidí terminarla”. Suspiró y prosiguió: “Encar-garme del proyecto fue un reto, al mismo tiempo que era un tipo de arte emocionante y fascinante. Pensé que mi hija y yo podríamos trabajar juntos. La terminamos y la llevé a la feria regional para que otros la vieran y la disfrutaran. Para mi sorpresa, ganó un Primer Lugar”. Miró como al espacio y concluyó: “Haber terminado la casita fue un proyecto dedicado a la memoria de mi abuelito, y su sueño se cumplió. La casita es ahora de mi hija”.

Cervantes cuenta acerca del mini-pueblo en su casa: “Motivado por la primera casita, construí otra desde el principio. Es una hermosa casa amarilla estilo Victoria. Para la tercera, solamente terminé lo que una amiga había empezado. La siguiente necesitaba el trabajo interior, y la terminé para otra amiga. Y tengo otras esperando ser constru-ídas o renovadas. Excepto por la primera, las otras son para sus dueños originales o para mis sobrinas. Mientras, mi hija está encantada de tenerlas todas para ella.

¿Quién es la damita que continuamente se menciona en la vida de Roberto Cervantes? Es su hija de cuatro años, llamada Carmen Liliana. Dijo de ella: “Es mi legado. La paternidad es mi última aventura. Es mi júbilo, alguien a quien puedo enseñar buenos modales, bondad, desinterés y las cosas buenas de la vida”. Con mucho orgullo, enfatizó: “De lunes a viernes, soy papá sin pareja, en casa—mi tiempo favorito de la semana”.

Eduardo José Cabra Martinez, also known as Visitante of Calle 13 fame, has been deliver-ing consistent, critically-acclaimed albums as a producer. With Trending Tropics he does this same labor: melding genres and ideas from latin music, with the help of singer Vicente garcía. The self-titled album by Trending Tropics is a condensed, eclectic compilation of classic latin-american sounds mixed with contempo-rary sounds and the voices of many interesting figures in today’s latin music landscape. The focus moves away from the artist to the song: a refreshing approach in today’s image-based pop music landscape.

The first song is an ominous, enchanting, bare composition in collaboration with Canalón de Timbiqui, an Afro-Colombian group that plays rhythms from Colombia’s pacific coast. This exploration of an overlooked music style is indicative of the rediscoveries of forgotten genres that are being introduced, with the help of pop structures and contemporary songwriting.

“Elintelné,” a cut that features Wiso G, is one of the most successful songs at blending genres in interesting ways. This track is, in its merengue splendor with a Mexican cumbia tinge, an absolute banger. It is fast-paced, upbeat, and deals with life with the internet in our society; a very

forward-looking concept. There’s a nod to reggae in “Reasons to Fight.” A salsa-inspired beat opens up “On Fire.” The album goes from a reggaetón track with a prominent dembow to a relaxed, night-at-the-beach song.

Because of the lush sonic landscape and the variety of styles and ideas, this album was destined to feel eclectic,

non-cohesive and even confused. In that sense, while most albums aim to be a defined color palette with tones and hues that compliment each other, “Trending Tropics” aims to represent the entire array of colors possible. It should be enjoyed as an expansive rainbow. It is a catalog of ideas from artists that are bringing the classic Latin-American musical traditions to present day.

Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, también conocido como Visitante de Calle 13, ha estado entregando discos consistentes y aclamados por la crítica como productor. Con Trending Tropics hace este mismo trabajo: fusionar géneros e ideas de la música latina, con la ayuda del cantante Vicente garcía. El álbum homónimo de Trending Tropics es una compilación ecléctica condensada de sonidos clásicos latinoamericanos mezclados con sonidos contemporáneos y las voces de muchas figuras interesantes en el panorama musical latinoamericano actual. Esta pista es, en su esplendor de merengue con un tinte de cumbia mexicana, un “banger” absoluto. Es acelerada, optimista y se relaciona con la vida de Internet en nuestra sociedad; Un concepto muy progresista. También hay un guiño al reggae en “Razones para luchar”. Un ritmo inspirado en la salsa abre “On Fire”. El álbum va desde una pista de reggaetón con un dembow prominente a una canción relajada, de noche en la playa.

Debido al exuberante paisaje sonoro y la variedad de estilos e ideas, este álbum estaba destinado a sentirse ecléctico, no cohesivo e incluso confuso. En ese sentido, mientras que la mayoría de los álbumes pretenden ser una paleta de colores definida con tonos y tonalidades que se complementan entre sí, “Trending Tropics” pretende representar toda la gama de colores posibles. Debe ser disfrutado como un arco iris expansivo. Es un catálogo de ideas de artistas que están trayendo las tradiciones musicales latinoamericanas clásicas a nuestros días.

Forgiveness has been defined as an intentional and voluntary decision to change one’s feelings and attitude towards an offender. at times we are the person offended, and other times we are the ones committing the offense. Regardless of what position we are in, it is an experience that does not discriminate based on age, gender, income, race, ethnicity, creed or language. as humans we are fallible and at times our behaviors and our actions may cause hurt and distress to others and to ourselves. other times we are those that have been impacted negatively by a loved one’s words or behaviors.

WHy is forgiVeness important?When we find ourselves in a position of needing to be forgiven or forgiving another

for their transgressions, it is not always an easy journey to reach forgiveness. We often are faced with challenges of overcoming our pride, hurt feelings and even at times years of holding on to resentment.

When we continue to focus on the negative feelings that arise from hurt and anger, we may find ourselves consumed by the negative emotions and feelings. When we allow those emotions to consume us, they begin to significantly impact our daily living, from the way we sleep, to how we feel about ourselves and the relationships we have with others. Being able to forgive not only helps heal those involved in the matter but, it also helps us heal from the negative emotions that have been present for so long.

How to forgiVe?Forgiving is not an easy task, particularly forgiving someone who has hurt us

greatly. Working towards forgiveness is exactly that, it’s work. It is challenging and sometimes requires us to look deep within and examine ourselves in a capacity that may be uncomfortable. However, as the old adage goes, from discomfort comes growth.

At times we internalize the emotions and blame ourselves for what has occurred. In order to forgive others, we must be able to first and foremost forgive ourselves.

Although forgiving is an important process for healing it is just as important to recognize that not every offense is forgivable. Our pain and hurt are valid and if forgiving someone does not feel right, we can honor ourselves and those emotions. Perhaps now is not the time, perhaps we may not be ready, perhaps we may never be ready.

The most important thing to remember is that each of us determines whom we want to forgive and when we are ready to do so. Participating in psychotherapy may help.

somos capaces de fallar, y a veces nuestro comportamiento y acciones pueden lastimar a otros y a nosotros mismos. otras veces nosotros somos quienes han sido lastimados por las palabras y ac-ciones de seres queridos.

¿Por Qué es imPortante el Perdón?Cuando nos encontramos en una posición donde necesitamos perdonar o pedir perdón

por nuestras acciones, la jornada de recibir o dar el perdón no siempre es fácil. A veces nos encontramos con el reto de superar nuestro orgullo, sentimientos heridos y hasta a veces años de resentimiento.

Cuando continuamos enfocándonos en los sentimientos negativos y dejamos que nos consuman, puede llegar al punto de impactar nuestra vida diaria, desde cómo dormimos, a cómo nos sentimos hacia nosotros mismos y hacia las relaciones que tenemos con otros. La habilidad de perdonar no simplemente ayuda a sanar a las personas involucradas en la situación, sino que también nos ayuda a sanar las emociones negativas que han estado presente por tanto tiempo.

¿cómo Perdonar?Perdonar no es una tarea fácil, especialmente perdonar a alguien quien nos ha causado

daño significativo. El trabajo de perdonar, es eso mismo, trabajo. Es un reto que a veces requiere que nos miremos en lo profundo y nos examinemos de maneras que pueden ser incómodas. Pero como dice el dicho, de la incomodidad viene el crecimiento.

A veces internalizamos nuestras emociones y empezamos a culparnos por lo que ocurrió. Para poder perdonar a otros tenemos que primero perdonarnos a nosotros mismos.

Aunque el perdonar es un proceso importante para poder empezar a sanar, es aún más importante reconocer que no todas las ofensas pueden ser perdonadas. Nuestro dolor es válido, y si perdonar a alguien quien nos ha lastimado no se siente como la decisión correcta, nosotros tenemos el derecho de honrarnos a nosotros mismos y a nuestras emociones. Quizás ahora mismo no es el momento adecuado, quizás no estamos listos, quizás nunca estaremos listos para perdonar.

Lo más importante de recordar es que cada uno de nosotros determina a quién y qué ofensa perdonar, y cuándo estamos listos para perdonar. El participar en psicoterapia puede ayudar.

next month is the birthday of César Chávez and is celebrated as a state holiday. Chávez led the struggle for the rights of farm workers here in California and in other western states.

César Chávez was born in Yuma, Arizona in 1937. He was raising a family and doing farm work in the San Joaquin Valley in the 1950’s when he met Fred Ross, founder of the Community Services Organization. He and Dolores Huerta became community organizers with Ross’s organization. After they later formed the National Farm Workers Association they were asked to collaborate in the 1965 Delano grape strike which was being started by veteran Filipino farm worker union leaders Larry Itleong and Phillip Vera Cruz. The two groups merged to create the United Farm Workers Union with Chavez at the head.

Chávez proved to be a charismatic leader. Thorough the union’s national grape and lettuce boycotts, the UFW won contracts with grape growers throughout the San Joaquin Valley and the Salinas Valley lettuce fields. Thanks to César Chávez, the Agriculture Labor Board was created. In its heyday, the UFW had 60,000 members.

Chávez’ Ghandi-like non-violent tactics and fasts made has given him a superhero status to many. History has largely chosen to follow the iconic myth around him rather than remember his contradictions. In truth, he was as much a caudillo as saint. Chávez’ iconoclasts will point out that the union marginalized its Filipino members. His first fast that succeeded in bringing publicity to the cause of the grape strike was actually done out of frustration over the thug tactics being used by his organizers on the picket line. He collaborated in the deportations of illegal immigrant scab workers with his “wet line” policy.

Chávez’ union left little control in the hands of its locals. It’s top down command structure contributed to its decline. Around 1977, the union at its headquarters in Keene started patterning itself after Synanon, a cult-like drug treatment program in Marin. People who had given the best years of their lives to la causa were purged and the union lost its brilliant legal staff as well. Today, the UFW has less than 5,000 members and has long since left the labor organizing business.

César Chávez died in 1993 at the age of 66. He is buried at La Paz, the union’s headquarters at Keene in the foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains. It can’t necessarily be said that he leaves as a legacy better lives for farm workers. Considering inflation and other factors, farm workers earn less today than before. Control of the labor market is now mainly in the hands of the union’s nemesis, the labor contractors. No, we celebrate César Chávez because he gave people dignity. To someone sweating in the fields, that might be something as simple as clean water to drink or having the privacy of using a port-o-potty when nature calls. And like Mohammed Ali, we will always admire him for the fights he won, not the one’s he lost. He will always be remembered for his success in winning union recognition for farm workers. Dozens of schools, streets and parks are named after him. His face even adorns a postage stamp. March 31st is his birthday. Feliz Cumpleanos César Chávez!

in a “newspaper of general circulation”. The County office gives you an approved list. There are certain legal or specialty newspapers who do this more cheaply than the big newspapers. The purpose of this is to give formal notice to the world, or at least the subscribers of that newspaper, that you have started your business using the name chosen.

These county fictitious business records are important for many purposes. They give consumers a way of making complaints about business owners that may not be otherwise identified. Certainly if a lawsuit against a business needs to be filed, especially if that business is not a corporation and does not use the owner’s name, one needs to know who the owner is and where to serve him the legal papers. Lastly it serves to ensure that two or more businesses are not using the same name in the same county for their business.

For one, business owners break the law by not registering their trade names, and theoretically risk being closed down by the County (at least temporarily). But there is also the risk that after one has invested time, money and hard work in building up the reputation of a name, if it is not registered, the name may be taken and used by someone else who may benefit from all of your hard work and effort.

En el año 2000, se unió a un grupo de productores para empezar el concurso de belleza de jovencitas de California, que se lleva a cabo en Rohnert Park.

Le pregunté: ¿Qué ganas con envolverte en estas actividades? Y Cervantes contestó: “Experiencia…gano la experiencia”. Luego expresó: “En mi modo de pensar, la comunidad me ha ayudado a encontrar y desarrollar mis habilidades, lo que valgo, aprender a ser sociable con todos y en cualquier parte. Ser activo es una forma de regresar lo que he recibido, para que otros adquieran la misma experiencia para su futuro”.

En verdad, Roberto ha pasado a otros la pasión que siente en ser sonidero y su cono- cimiento en arte gráfico a otros jóvenes, como aquellos que asistían a la Asociación de Jóvenes Cristianos y al Centro Juvenil Chops, cuando trabajaba allí.

migrantes—Rufino y Gloria Jean Leéay Puentes—quienes vinieron de Texas a trabajar en los campos del area de Healdsburg. Piscaron manzanas, higos y uvas.

Sus padres inculcaron a los niños a hablar solamente inglés por la discriminación que habían sentido cuando hablaban español. Luego, sucedió que en el Condado de Sonoma, los que hablaban inglés y español tenían mejores oportunidades de obtener empleo que no fuera en los campos. La Sra. Puentes, por ejemplo, fue contratada por el Distrito Escolar de Healdsburg, como asistente a la higienista. Las cosas iban muy bien y se mudó la familia a Santa Rosa.

Roberto quiso compartir una experiencia del día de su graduación de la Escuela Preparatoria Santta Rosa.
