Some local restaurants offer vari-ous cultural foods that are a tradition inthe many cultural groups that form Be-lize. In addition don’t hesitate to tastethe seafood that the island has to offerprepared in many forms such as sea-food ceviches, whole fried fish, sautéed

“What time is it?” I asked Dulce. “I think my watch has stopped.”

“Mine says it’s ten minutes to nine,” she said, “but I didn’t reset itwhen we arrived in the U.S.”

We had flown in to Washington, D.C. that morning on our way tovisit Dennis Jr. and we were just driving away from the rental carcompany.

“O.K. My watch has definitely stopped,” I said. “It says eightminutes past eight. I either have to get it fixed or buy a new one. It’sprobably just the battery. Keep an eye out for a place where it lookslike they might work on watches.”

We drove for miles through the suburbs of Alexandria, Virginiawithout seeing any place that looked like it might even sell a watchbattery.

“Slow down!” Dulce said, as we came upon a little strip mall.“What is that place?”

One of the stores had a display window full of clocks and watches. The writing above the store was in a foreign language.

“I think that writing is Hebrew,” I said, as I looked for a parkingspot.

“Look,” Dulce said. “All of the stores have signs in Hebrew.”

“Oh, this must be the Jewish business section,” I said. “Well, let’sgive it a try.”

In the shop, I asked the little old man behind the counter, “Can youchange the battery in my watch for me?”

“Sir, I cannot repair your watch,” he said.

“Why not? It’s just an ordinary watch with a replaceable battery.”

“I do not repair watches,” he said. “I am a mohel or as it issometimes called a moel.”

“What is a mohel?” I asked.

“A mohel is a doctor or a rabbi who performs circumcisions,” hetold me. “That’s what I do. I am a rabbi and I perform circumcisionsfor the Jewish community.”

“Then why do you have all of these clocks and watches in yourwindow?” I asked.

“Well, then,” he said. “Exactly what do you think I should have inmy window?”
