History of the Rum Punch II The sun sets in the horizon, slowlydisappearing into the azure waters ofthe Caribbean Sea; the Rum Punch II,powered by the gentle breeze movestowards the picture perfect sunset.Postcard beautiful, it is inspiration fora painting; undeniably the perfect placeto fall in love and an experience that isavailable through George Eiley’s fabu-lous sailing cruises. Born in Belize City, George grewup in the picturesque village ofPlacencia, where he learned to navi-gate from his father who was the light-house keeper. After learning carpen-try, George was offered a job in SanPedro, one which he didn’t hesitate intaking. In San Pedro, he fell in lovewith Atlantida “Tanta” Guerrero andnow a family man he decided to makehis childhood dreams a reality andbought his first boat. Named by one ofhis guests, the Rum Punch was an ab-solute success. Charging $10 US a daytrip, it proved to be a very lucrativeprofession in the late 70’s. George’s first boat, which he retro-fitted to best suit his needs, was pur-chased between 1978/79 and unfortu-nately “died of old age.” A new pur-chase came in sight, provided by Mr.Milo Paz, and in 1985 the Rum PunchII was born. Today, the Rum Punch is still knownas the best way to enjoy Caribbean sail-ing. No big motors or modern dayamenities, just you in touch with na-ture and in touch with history. George’sknowledge of the sea infects you andyou itch to take a turn manning the boatthat has sailed the Caribbean for years(and he happily obliges, giving every-one a taste of real sailing).Sailing: Can you imagine a day out at seawith family or a group of friends har-nessing nature’s resources and cuttingacross the water under the power ofthe wind? Well, here is your chance;experience the joy of sailing with a halfday or a full day tour of the Caribbeanwaters, under the guidance of GeorgeEiley aboard the Rum Punch II.

with years of experience at sea underhis belt, you can bet your money that itwon’t be any ordinary maritime esca-pade. Sailing truly is the best way to un-wind, providing a calm, meditativestate. The scenery, sunlight, and Car-ibbean breezes take over, making theouting with friends a special one. Ofcourse one of the best reasons to take aboat around the island is that you cango to places where you can’t get to bycar or on foot. Places that are com-

pletely unspoiled and the sea is coloredin every blue shade imaginable, whileremaining crystal clear for when youput on your mask, snorkel and flippers, ready to explore the wonders of theCaribbean underworld. Although agood starting point for sailing eithernorth or south, you may find it difficultto leave the glistening beaches andwonderful anchorages of San Pedro it-self. The waters are superb for swim-ming, snorkeling, diving and sailing.

The structure of the tour you choose will al-low you to do as much, or as little as youdesire. So, if you want to actively take partin all aspects of sailing the boat you will betaught all the correct techniques required, orsimply relax and let the skipper do the workas you soak up the atmosphere of being atsea. Maybe it is a little too hot on the islandbut on the sea there is a cool and calmingbreeze, and with the canopy providing shade, there is nowhere more pleasant to be than

Rum Punch II. And, they didn’t namethe boat “Rum Punch II” for any old rea-son; Captain George welcomes allfriends to his boat with a refreshing andkiller “Rum Punch” that will leave youin a happy mood for the entire trip. Onthe way, catch a glimpse of AmbergrisCaye’s beautiful beaches, coconutpalms, captivating resorts and of coursean underwater world that is home tohundreds of species of fish and severaltypes of coral that surround the island. This sailing adventure entails a day outat sea plus a chance to enjoy the fun filledblue water playground just waiting to beexplored.

“Hey, Dennis. I don’t know if you remember me or not but . . .” “Sure, I remember you,” I said. “I just don’t remember your name.” “Ron,” he said. “Ron, from Colorado.” “I may not remember your name,” I told him, “but I do remember that you’re aheck of a guitarist. Are you going to sit in with us today and play some music.” “I’d really like that,” Ron said. “I brought my guitar and amp with me, hoping toplay a little bit.” It was Sunday afternoon and we were still setting up our musical equipment forthe jam session when Ron came in. Sherry finished tuning her bass guitar and came over to the steps where Ron andI sat. “Hey, I remember you,” she said to Ron. “You’re the guitar player from Colo-rado who was here about a year ago.” “Yep. That’s me. Ron.” “Welcome back to Belize Ron,” she said. “How long are you going to be here?” “Oh, I moved here,” he said. “You did?” I was surprised until I remembered that Ron had told us that he bought property onthe mainland. “I’m here for good,” he said. “I drove down through Mexico.” “How was the trip?” Sherry asked. “The trip through Mexico was great,” he said. “The only time I got really ner-vous was when I arrived in Belize City.” “The traffic is pretty scary in Belize City,” I said. “Oh, there wasn’t any traffic,” Ron said. “I got in at about 3:30 in the morningand while I was driving through a rough looking area of town my truck engine died.” “Man, that’s bad luck,” I said. “I knew what the problem was,” Ron said. “There’s a loose wire on the distribu-tor and it had come off a couple of timeson the road in Mexico. I figured that Icould get a mechanic to fix it when I gotto Belize.” “Not at 3:30 in the morning,” I said. “Right. I got out and raised the hood tofix the wire. I heard a noise from theback of the truck and some gnarly look-ing guy was starting to take things out ofthe truck bed. I yelled at him and said,‘Hey, man! This is my truck.’” “Did he run?” I asked. “No. He said, ‘O.K. Yu tek de t’ingout de front and I get the t’ing out theback.’”
