Lambis Englezos AM is a Greek born Australian art teacher and amateur historian who has devoted many years to uncovering truth and developing strategies to move officialdom to support this work. His extraordinary efforts have changed the lives of many people. Lambis was responsible for discovering mass war graves for some 250 lost Australian soldiers

from the disastrous Battle of Fromelles from World War 1 near Fromelles in France where on July 19, 1916, Australian and British allied soldiers lost their lives at a small village in France called Fromelles.

Melbourne-based Lambis delivers a factual and authoritative 30 - 40 presentation + Q&A about the journey of finding these lost soldiers in France. His presentation is supported by some quite moving images of lost soldiers, mass grave sites and those of soldiers whose families now know what happened to them.

Tim Whitford’s will talk about his long and emotional journey tracing the missing Australian soldiers of the WWI battle of Fromelles. Tim's search was driven by the idea that some Australian soldiers had actually broken through the German lines and were not in fact missing – they’d been killed in battle and buried by the German army. Dr Peter Condos read the fellowship details and informed the members present that there were no birthday announcements but it was Connie Maina’s anniversary. Peter reminded all present that the meeting on the 15th September will be a night meeting and a Pizza night (see events calendar). Each committee to give a 5 minute presentation on their years objectives Speaker for the day - Police Superintendent Cindy Millen Richard Lawrence introduced the speaker for the day Police Superintendent Cindy Millen, Cindy participated in the Rotary club mentor program 5 years ago. The Audrey Fagan Memorial Award winner, recognising outstanding women who have shown exceptional qualities as a mentor, role model and leader of men and women in policing and law enforcement and chosen

by a selection panel from all of this year’s nominees was awarded to Cindy. Cindy had shown herself to be an outstanding leader and positive role model for Victoria Police, she is supportive, unselfish, challenges the thinking of any person, leads by example and demonstrates to people, in particular women, that there is no obstacle too big to stop you from achieving your goals and dreams, the award presenter said. Cindy said that she joined the Police force at the tender age of 19 and had very little life experience and she was keen to learn from the experience of others and especially mentors, she said this was one of the main reasons she joined the Rotary mentor program. Cindy mentioned that she has done the Moonee Valley Police Kokoda program and also worked with the returned soldiers from Afghanistan suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Cindy stated that there is a human face to the Police men and women and that there are Police members suffering from PTS and unfortunately some of the men in particular are reluctant to take treatment until it is too late.

She said that people should be made more aware of mental health issues. Cindy said that she now works in the city and travels from her home in Geelong and tries to get back home to her children at a reasonable time but is often called out at night if there is an emergency as she is responsible for all the crimes that happen in the city of Melbourne and Yarra and need to prepare statistics of these crimes for analysis. Cindy spoke about the recent reclaim Australia demonstrations in the City and how she had to control the two groups by instructing her Police men & women on the scene to avoid a clash between the two groups. Cindy mentioned that she is currently working on a few projects one of which is the “home safe” program for late night trains with the PSOs, and another was a study at Deakin University about the drug problem in the city especially ice and the work she is doing with the Australian drugs foundation. Cindy stated that she is currently involved in planning for the Spring racing carnival the tennis and the football finals. Cindy finished by saying that her passion is helping women in the Police force moving through the ranks. Veronica O’ Sullivan said that she has known Cindy Millen for a long time and that she was an exceptional officer that we can all be proud of to have in our Police force.

Mens Shed The Men’s Shed at Mascoma St Strathmore will open at 10am Saturday 29 August 2015 for our first

information session for the public. Our members Lisa Lowcock, Alistair Fraser, Lino Airo-Farulla and Karyn

Clarke have volunteered their services to assist on the day. We at Essendon Rotary are also responsible for the

BBQ and we need some more helpers. Please contact Alistair (0411 117 881) if you can assist cook a good

snag!!

A formal application has been lodged with Moonee Valley Council for a Grant to assist with funding The Great

Moonee Valley Discovery which we hope to run in March 2016. The Grant application process is quite

exacting. President Peter has thanked Alistair Fraser for preparing our submission and we hope for the right

outcome.

Strathmore Mens Shed (SMS) will have its first open session at 10am, Saturday 29/8/2015 and we need

volunteers to assist on this day and into the future. SMS will be run on a day to day basis by 3 Rotary Clubs:

Essendon, Essendon North and Strathmore. Moonee Valley Council will provide support as required.

We currently have more than 80 people who have indicated that they wish to use the SMS and we expect a

large turn-out on the 29th so we need your help to ensure this day is successful. This would involve managing

the enrolment procedures, but not matters related to handling tools or machinery.

After this day we require volunteers to assist with running the hands-on sessions and this will involve tools and

machinery. Lino Airo-Farulla has already volunteered and we are seeking more members, or friends of

members, who might enjoy being more closely involved with this significant Rotary community project. For

more information contact Alistair Fraser, 9379 4836 or 0411 117 881.

Note from Lino

Lino stated that the food at Anglers is improving a bit and hoped that this improvement will continue.

Help Hats Help Heads on World Mental Health Day

Hat Day is Australian Rotary Health’s national fundraising and awareness day for mental health research,

celebrated each year on World Mental Health Day - Friday October 9, 2015. Since the inaugural Hat Day in

2011, Hat Day has claimed two Guinness World Records (most people wearing paper hats & most people

wearing red hats). Hat Day recently launched a new logo, as well as a new website with social fundraising

features.

Hat Day has acquired a number of high profile ambassadors in its five years of running, including actors Elle

Dawe, Matt Lee and Pauly Fenech. Most recently, we were joined by Dr Happy – Dr Tim Sharp, Chief

Happiness Officer at the Happiness Institute. Since 2014, Hat Day has also partnered with the ABC to promote

mental health research in Australia.

Rotary Clubs have been our biggest supporters to date, and with your help we are reaching an increasing

number of organisations who are hosting Hat Day events in their workplaces. This year, clubs in Hobart,

Sydney and Melbourne will be hosting corporate launch events with high profile guests and speakers,

including Dr Happy, sharing insights on happiness.

Some other great Hat Day events and initiatives have included:

• Trivia nights – many clubs have held successful events using our trivia host kit available upon request;

• A pirate-themed river cruise;

• Taking posters and collection boxes to local business receptions;

• The Melbourne Cup Milliner’s cocktail and showcase evening;

• A photo-booth in Pitt Street Mall, Sydney;

• Stalls at local shopping centres or community events (some with cupcakes);

• Official fundraising at train stations;

• The annual Australian Rotary Health Wine, Food & Race Day.

Therefore to learn more about the wonderful humanitarian and educational programs which your club can participate in, we recommend to you this popular seminar which will be an interactive forum for you and any Rotarian in your club. The financial support of each club to OUR Foundation throughout our District is so important for us to be able to continue to carry out the humanitarian and educational programs that Rotary is renowned for. Thoughts for the day

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.” - Marilyn Monroe

“I have walked the long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended” - Nelson Mandela – Long walk to Freedom
