you…all from Sheba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises

of the Lord…Then they spread their treasures and offered him gifts of gold frankincense and

myrrh.”

The season of holiday visiting is drawing to a close. Lights still shine, the manger scene is special

today, and unwrapped gifts are still to be seen. The memories of visits, carols and delicious traditional foods

are still fresh and happy. But what happens now?

Like the magi we have waited, searched and found the Christ. It’s our turn to bring gifts, not the

three mentioned in Isaiah and Matthew, but a more precious gift, a more valued gift, the one that the Lord

Jesus is waiting to receive from us. It is the gift of ourselves.

We bring joy, hope and happiness. Joy - because we have a Savior, hope - because our world can

become better, happiness - because He has chosen me to bring Him to others. We bring an awareness that

this Jesus comes again and wishes to accompany us in this new year. He can’t wait for us to get started. We

can choose this route, or just simply take the decorations and put them away to gather dust for another year.

The choice is quite clear. “They departed for their own country by another way.”

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY

First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Isaiah tells of the Lord’s Servant, who will be inconspicuous, but will not rest until justice is established. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed to be “a light for the nations.” Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38 Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that any person who follows God’s will is acceptable to God, regardless of nationality. Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a voice said, “You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests.”

Getting Ready For Sunday Join Fr. Richard for a deeper insight into the Scripture Readings for Sunday Mass. By gaining an understanding of the context and culture within which they were written, the upcoming Sunday Readings will take on a more profound and richer meaning for you. Weekly discussions will resume on Thursday, January 10th from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the Church Meeting Room and repeated on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:00pm in the Pastoral Center Library. All are welcome to attend one or more sessions. Previous attendance not required.

FAMILY ROSARY

RCIA and the Blessing of Marriages Adults who desire to be baptized, those who are members of other Christian communities, or those who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation and would like to be initiated or complete their initiation into the Sacramental life of the Roman Catholic Church are invited to consider doing so. Any adult who has the desire are asked to contact Fr. Richard so that they may be given more information and direction. If any couple in the parish are married but have not had their marriage blessed by the Church, and for whom there is no impediment in doing so, they are invited to contact Fr. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta said “A Holy Hour of adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament opens up the floodgates of God’s merciful Love upon the world.” 1st through 10th grades Faith Formation will resume this Sunday, January 6th with the Eucharistic Adoration Family Faith session led by Fr. Richard.

This will take place immediately after Mass. Families may attend either one of the following sessions:

6:00pm-7:30pm (Mass included)

FAITH FORMATION

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS

The following items are greatly needed to replenish our Food Pantry: Pancake Mix, White Rice (2lb bag), Hot Chocolate, Tuna, Spaghetti Sauce, Coffee, Corn, Chicken Noodle Soup, and

Vegetable Soup. Please bring all items to the basket in the church set aside for food pantry items.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IN OUR PARISH

Our church is open daily from 7:30am to 9:00pm, closing on Saturday and Sunday after the evening Mass. On the third Friday of each month we have Adoration and the praying of the Rosary particularly focused on families – come, bring your children and grandchildren and teach them to speak to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament. On First Fridays we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 8:30am Mass through the night until 8:00am on Saturday. If you are awake because you have many concerns, come talk to Him. Jesus is absolutely and truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament – many, many Saints became Saints because they knew and responded to this truth. “Do you realize that Jesus is there…especially for you- for you alone? THE WOMEN’S RETREAT MINISTRY

Women of the parish are invited to a presentation entitled “Enter the New Year

with Mary” which will be given by Fr. Richard. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, January 9th at 7:00pm in the Chapel. The

mission of the Retreat Ministry is to offer women of the parish opportunities for spiritual growth

through short meditations, speakers and discussions. In the Fall, a Weekend Retreat is

offered at St. Mary’s Abbey.

SHRINE RECOVERY MINISTRY

The Shrine hosts a monthly Recovery Mass on the second Saturday of every month from 12:00 to 1:30pm. Mass is followed by an Intercessory Prayer Session. The next Mass is January 12th.
