The Production Process

When making my media product it will need to go through a production and publication phase. Which means following 5 main steps: • Thinking about ideas for the magazine, what it will look like, what genre it will follow, what

audience it will be targeted at, and what content there will be.• Researching into current magazines which are on the market, how they could be similar to

your media product, how/why they are successful, who are their audience, what is their content/design/what makes it appealing.

• Produce visual flat plans to show what my media product will look like. – to make producing my actual product.

• Constructing my product on an industrial scale on Photoshop.• Distributing my product to a large or niche audience, depending on the target audience,

commercial or independent?

PublishingMy magazines target audience largely consists of ‘indies’ and ‘rock/scene kids’, which makes my target audience similar to those of current magazines such as Kerrang! Magazine, and Rocksound magazine, which distributed to be mainstream rather than to a niche market. Therefore, it is most likely that my magazine would be distributed commercially to a large target audience. Kerrang!, Q and Empire magazine which are similar to my magazine, are published by companies such as Beaur Media Group, and Rocksound magazine, is published through Sonic Publishing. These magazines are all similar to mine and portray the same genre of music, therefore it would be beneficial to publish my magazine with one of these companies, Beaur Media Group or Sonic Publishing. Their products are usually distributed mainstream to a large target audience, however they are still niche in terms of age and particular stereotypes. With a large target audience, these products are distributed to large retailers, such as supermarkets ad WHSmiths. Also, another way they are distributed to a large target audience is by distributing them across the internet as well as through retail, which enables a larger audience to access the products.

Who would DistributeBeaur Media Group publish Kerrang! Magazine, along with Kerrang! Radio, and Kerrang TV, which together broadcasts and publicizes the main rock genre towards a young ‘indie’ audience. By having a large collection of interactive media, along with online access and social networking, effectively manage to reach Kerrang!’s target audience with content which is specific to the rock/indie genre. By understanding and knowing the magazines audience thoroughly, it enables the publishing company to produce products which they know will successfully satisfy readers and will sell easily, bringing in more and higher revenue to re-invest back in to production. My product is very similar to Kerrang! Magazine as I used it for my textual research. My magazine follows the same genre of music as Kerrang!, and targets a similar audience, which would be useful as Beaur Media could use publishing techniques from publishing Kerrang! And apply them to publishing my magazine. Although Beaur Media has a strong reputation and a high range from fashion to music genres, producing a similar magazine to a current one would not be risky as it would contribute further to a diverse range of products to its audiences. It is important that my publishing company is capable of producing my product to the highest standard and that they are reliable.During production of my product, Beaur’s ability into familiarizing and specializing in their magazines audiences would benefit my magazine as it would gradually and commercially increase the audience size of my magazine. It would also construct a product that would appeal to my target audience and would also ensure popularity and sales with the new magazine and its audience.

Advertising my MagazineMagazines such as Kerrang!, which are similar to mine, are advertised through its corresponding TV programme, radio channel, websites, social networking and posters. This is similar to Rocksound magazine, who are advertised online through social networking such as Facebook and Twitter. Considering their target audience, this is an effective way of reaching their target audiences, as these methods are popular with their audiences age and hobbies. This is also effective for advertising towards a larger commercial and mainstream audience, as most young people will regularly be in contact with these agents of advertising. For my magazine, the target audience is also mainstream, intending to target a large market. Due to this, using similar strategies to Kerrang! And Rocksound, would be easy and beneficial to apply to my magazine. Using Facebook and Twitter to advertise would attract a large audience as it contacts a large group of people, also it is usually free which would mean it was easy to target my audience directly – because this is the most popular way of communicating and advertising online. I would also like my magazine to be advertised on television, on particularly music channels such as Kerrang! TV, scuzz or lava.

Distributing my ProductDistributing my product to a mainstream audience would mean I would need to distribute it through large popular stores and retailers to be able to access my target audience. It would be most beneficial to distribute through stores such as WHSmiths, HMV, ASDA, Morrison's, and other large supermarkets. There would also be a subscription service to enable my audience to receive copies of the magazine through the post for a price. This would allow readers to have every issue of my magazine by having it delivered to their house rather than them having to take the effort to buy it from a store. Although this would be costly, for both my magazine and the customers as post and packaging may be high cost, it would allow customers to become loyal and to create relationships with them. The emergence of web 2.0 will make it easier for my magazine to be distributed and advertised online , from online add agencies that could be ‘add on’s’ on websites, and pages of rock/pop alternative clothing websites or music stores – this would reach a larger audience within the genre.
