The Primary Update Pre– K Grade 1

May 2nd , 2013

WELCOME PAGE

Dear Parents,

I always enjoy showing visitors around the J building, for the Pre-K to Grade One children offer such a warm welcome and they love to talk about the things they've been doing.

I am so fortunate to see so much and often wish you were seeing it too; for I know you'd feel so proud of your children.

In this update, you get the chance to share a little of what I so often have the privilege to see.

As always, I hope you enjoy it.

Best wishes,

Sue Carpenter

Head of Primary

PRE-K

We are learning about plants and flowers in Pre-K. We listened as ‘Sid the Seed’ explained how he grew from a little seed into a big tree. We planted our own sunflower seeds and are watching and measuring them as they grow taller each day.

A big thank-you to our ‘green fingered’ parent volunteers for their help with this topic! We have grown an assortment of foods and herbs to eat and flowers to admire! The most exciting thing we have grown is a ‘bean’ in our greenhouses! Having read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ many times the children are very excited to see how tall their beanstalks will grow.

The children are now busy preparing for the opening of our classroom Garden Centre. We are making flowers and gathering items such as gardening tools and books that we can sell to people hoping to plant their own garden.

KG1

It has been a busy week in KG1. The children were learning all about the letter ‘w’ in Literacy. We read the story ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and the children looked at pictures of ‘Wild Things’. Then they used their observations to paint their own ‘Wild Thing’ which you will now see hanging down the KG1 corridor, so come and have a look. The children also had a go at weaving some washing. The girls used wool to weave in and out of a dress and the boys did the same with a pair of trousers. Lots of painting was going on as we also painted our own settings in IPC. We discussed settings in different stories and looked at different pictures. The children then chose what they wanted to paint and wrote the name. You will see these wonderful pictures of caves, forests, castles etc. displayed outside each classroom.

KG2

We had a very busy week in KG2. As an exit point to our topic on Jobs, we all came to school dressed up to represent our future career path (which will more than likely change many times between now and adulthood!). We would like to thank all the wonderful parents who came in for our career day to speak to the children about their profession and answer all the interesting questions.

The children also had great fun exploring all the 3D shapes around the school on our shape walk. They also designed and created their own 3D shapes which we are using to create 3D models.

We found a cylinder on our shape walk!

All dressed up for our career day.

GRADE 1

Our IPC topic ‘Our World’ has come to an end this week. The children did a fantastic job researching their endangered animals, and they decided they wanted to help save these animals . A good way to do this was to teach children throughout the year groups about these animals and what we can do to protect them. The Sandcats held a museum exhibition and invited the whole school to come and see their endangered animals and research. Leopards, Camels and Foxes have worked hard on their research, posters and paintings. Come and have a look!

Having at look at the museum exhibition.

We loved it! Thank you G1 Sandcats and Mrs Cullen!
