The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is in the process of transforming into one of the world’s most exciting high-growth markets. The overwhelming key to that transition will be the development of new businesses, improving competitiveness, raising income and generating employment.

As a result, entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly becoming a priority for local policymakers, who recognise that these two groups play a vital role.

• More than one quarter of youths in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are unemployed. The region needs to create 75 million jobs by 2020 – a jump of more than 40% over the number of jobs in 2011 – just to keep employment close to current levels.

• Currently there are about 150 existing initiatives that encourage entrepreneurial

activity in the MENA region.

• In the MENA region there are an estimated 15 to 20 million entrepreneurs and SMEs.

• The UAE has approximately 200,000 entrepreneurs and SMEs, who employ 42% of the workforce and amount to 30% of GDP.

• Recent reports from the UAE Ministry of Economy show that entrepreneurs and SMEs contributions in 2011 jumped to 60% of GDP.

To drive the region’s economic growth and diversification, focus has to be placed on entrepreneurs that truly

innovate and create new markets or complete supply gaps, as it is these activities that generate positive sustainable economic effects and employment opportunities.

To support this drive, Entrepreneurial Ventures of Arabia (EVA) presents theGlobal Entrepreneurship Summit (GES).

The Global Entrepreneurship Summit was announced in 2009 by President of the United States Barack Obama in his ‘A New Beginning’ speech at Cairo University in Egypt. The GES debuted the following year when the President held the first event in Washington to empower entrepreneurs with the skills and resources necessary to compete and thrive in the 21st century. The 2nd edition followed in 2011, hosted by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul, Turkey and welcomed a US delegation including Vice President Joe Biden. This prestigious event now comes to Dubai to be held alongside EVA to present an unprecedented platform for the Middle East.

Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and backed by overwhelming support, direction and participation from the UAE Government, Entrepreneurial Ventures of Arabia is the Middle East and Africa’s Premier Summit and Exhibition for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. Held in Dubai, the event will offer key stakeholders clear insights into the regional new business climate, in a constructive and peer-to-peer setting, whilst providing entrepreneurs and SMEs access to institutional and private investors seeking to explore new business alliances.

The MENA region’s entrepreneurial activity today seems robust with approximately 13% of the region’s working population engaged in entrepreneurial activity, far more than in the US, Germany or Japan. However, this is deceptive as the high level of entrepreneurship is mainly driven by necessity – shop owners and farmers who employ only themselves, lack other opportunities and usually do not aspire to grow the business beyond their own subsistence needs.
