March has been an interesting month to say the least.

The weather has been glorious, nice days and even a bit of

rain, giving the gardens and lawns a wash and a drink.

In between our general garden and maintenance tasks, Scott

and I have completed installing irrigation around home 75 and have

completed most of the landscaping. We also modified some of the irrigation

on the big lawn area, freeing capacity for additional sprinklers on the planned

expansion of the lawn area to the north.

I would like to thank all residents for their cooperation in dealing with the Corona

Virus, assisting in developing strategies to best deal with protecting our health

and welfare here at Riverside.

Thank you for your cooperation in cancelling Resident AGM, Tai Chi, Procreate,

and many other activities in the Recreation Centre with numerous participants.

Thank you also to the residents who have made themselves available to other

residents assisting in grocery shopping and other tasks.

I have tried to keep residents informed with changes that we have implemented

and

initiatives undertaken to keep Riverside as safe as possible. Not all residents may

agree with some of the initiatives, however I believe any precautions we take

individually and collectively will not be a waste of effort.

We have now closed Murray Dyer Avenue gate 24/7, an extreme measure at the

moment maybe, however with the virus spread an unknown factor, the gates

may prove to be welcome hinderance. Let’s all hope it doesn’t get to that!

DIRECTOR’S REPORT FROM JIM

Our lives at Riverside Estate have changed. The Corona virus pandemic has impacted every one of us. in the Village, Renmark, Australia and the rest of the World. Our situation will get worse and, as management, we have to plan for the worst.

Most residents seem to accept the enormity of the crisis. Others maybe not so much. Yes, you are lucky to be living in the country, in a secure gated community that is better able to meet this challenge. But we are at risk and there is no room for complacency. Invariably your most crucial decisions will be purely personal; health, financial, self-isolation, travel, distancing, shopping etc.

But residents’ communal health and safety is as important and many of your decisions also need to consider the impact to fellow residents and staff. As employers we particularly ask that you allow our staff to work in a safe and friendly environment at all times and respect that this is a very difficult time for them.

Amongst our community there are strong intellects, a wealth of experience and many differing opinions. These, and our supportive culture, have always been a strength and will help get us through. Ken reports that he has acted on many of your reasoned suggestions already; visitors, sanitation, operation of gates etc.

We are receiving daily advice from Health authorities both as it applies in general and specific advice to Re-tirement Village Operators.

As a management team, we are applying this broader expert advice to our unique situation at Riverside. Because it is changing daily we have authorised Ken to make collective decisions on our behalf. He is keen to hear and consider your opinions. And like any leader, his decisions will take into account national directives, and will be made in the best interests of the majority of residents. Please respect these decisions and let him know of changes to your personal situation if they are likely to impact others.

We also wish to assure all residents that we have reviewed our financial position and that we have the financial reserves to ride this crisis for as long as it takes.

I hope you and your loved ones keep safe and calm during this crisis. We will get through it. Let’s hope it is over soon so we can get back to our normal relaxed lifestyle at Riverside Estate.



RIVERSIDE ESTATE RESIDENTS COMMITTEE AGM

Due to the postponement of the Riverside Estate Residents Committee AGM and the subsequent

announcement of the committee members for the RERC and the Social Club for 2020 - 2021,

the outgoing committees will remain in office until such time as a new AGM can be arranged.

POTTER INN GARDENERS

There are plenty of strawberries in the garden and the spring onions are growing well. Still a few zucchini and egg plant ready to pick, but not much else available at the moment. We will be doing some more planting in the next few weeks so hopefully it won't be too long before there are some more veggies ready. We have planted bean seeds which apparently the ducks enjoy digging up, so may be necessary to get some growing in seed trays before planting them out next time.

I have noticed lots of ladybirds in the strawberry patch - it is great to see these busy little creatures, as I think they are a sign of a healthy garden and seeing them never fails to make me smile. So if you need cheering up, go pick some strawberries and look for the ladybirds.

With the start of a new year for the Garden Club we welcome Jenny, who has taken over the role

of Note Taker/Secretary at the monthly meetings. We look forward to hearing from Jenny each

month on what is happening in the garden. A big thank-you to Cheryl who has provided us with

the monthly newsletter updates for the last 3 years.

Team Leader Potter Inn Gardeners Report March 5th 2020

The fruit trees once again were a great success with absolutely the most delicious fruit and loads of it, although a couple of our younger trees are a bit lazy, but that happens to all living things on this planet great and small. The strawberries have been great, peas, sweetcorn, not such a success, the tomato grower had a great outcome, the radish grower always seems to have success, and some of our veggies were not the hit that we would have expected.

Our new greenhouse has been a great investment housing the tomato plants and Noel’s frames that has kept them tidier and a bit easier to pick, and the Tomatoes were perfect.

I still believe there are more questions need to be asked about where we go from here to maintain the gar-den to a reasonable standard. In saying that I understand that we are all still growing up and having more important things to do.

The garden at the moment is looking pretty good, the weeds will be always an ongoing and so weeding is a never ending job, and then there is the pruning, some of us are not too enthusiastic about that, maybe it is because we are all still growing up and our limbs don’t work that well.

I believe we have the watering right at this moment, but we have had some problems with small cockle shells blocking the filters and now only needs those on the watering roster to check that it is all working, but maybe some extra watering on some of the very hot periods. Over the years we have tried to get the watering right so watering does not become a tedious job.

I believe the monthly meetings are important to keep our group together, keep them light and bright with the opportunity for everyone to have their say, we are volunteers and we all have a voice.

Thank you Jenny, Mike and Val, Val who has had work on one of her knees and not been seen about for a while, we wish her well for being the Note Taker and Money Holder, Noel, for his water management that has been a bit of a pain this last 12 months, Graham (Havachat) and Marie for collecting and recycling the cans and bottles the money keeps our joining fees very low, John and Yvonne, Mazz and Tony, this includes everyone who has put time into maintaining our special community garden, and once again those fairies that hover over our garden to spread a bit of garden love.

Mazz, Tony and Val I know it has not been easy for you, I sincerely say thank you for staying on board.

To our faithful members, thank you for being part of the Potter Inn Gardeners, I hope you will sign up again this year.

Thank you to the residents who have picked and enjoyed the produce, your involvement enables us to pur-chase seedlings and fertilizer and other bits and pieces for the garden to make the garden user friendly. Team Leader: John

Soft drinks & beer are available for purchase in the Rec Centre.

A whiteboard is located in the main hall area in the Rec Centre behind the produce table

so the Social Club can list all the up-coming events for the month.

Attendance lists will still be located in the Library - please add your name if you wish to attend.

When this is all behind us, it will be a good excuse to have a big get-together.
