Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time What makes a good leader? It’s a much asked question these days. To judge by the groaning shelves of bookshops many are still venturing answers to it. Is it a gift, a charism, that some people have and others don’t? Is it an art that can be acquired? The debate goes on. Within the Church there’s plenty of talk about servant-leadership. Those who are ordained to ministry or entrusted with high office can hardly forget what Jesus had to say about himself: “ … the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk 10:45). This saying of Jesus may seem to call Christian leaders to be lowly, unobtrusive and self-effacing. But Jesus was not of these things. He was powerful, provocative and prophetic, never a person to be ignored or overlooked. yet he was truly a servant a servant-leader whose whole being was on fire with passion for the reign of god. This is the key to his servant-leadership his complete freedom from self-interest. The authority that impressed the crowds time and again was the authority of his authenticity. Like the tunic taken from him on Calvary, his life was seamless, it was all of a piece. If we are to emulate him, we may need to prayerfully take to heart the words addressed to deacons when they are ordained: “Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach”. The Pastoral Council warmly invites all Parishioners to join in the celebration of Fr Peter’s Twenty-Five Years of Priesthood. The Jubilee Mass will be celebrated at 10.00am on Sunday 9 th October. We hope to see you at this special Mass and at the morning tea which will be held after Mass at the back of the Church. Please bring a plate to share. “May they rest in peace.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’ The Lord replied, ‘Were your faith the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.

‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, “Come and have your meal immediately?” Would he not be more likely to say “Get my super laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards”? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty.”

Commentary on the Gospel Jesus never exploits his powers in order to impress

an audience with wonder-working phenomena. He

explicitly repudiates this kind of action when

tempted by Satan to change stones into bread, so he

can hardly be encouraging his disciples to literally

move mulberry trees or mountains. Rather he is

daring them to let go of their fearful and sceptical

mindsets and enter into the realm of divine power

where all things are possible to God.

The second and longer part of the reading sounds

harsh. It sounds as if Jesus is almost

contemptuously relegating his disciples to the role of

slaves. What he has to say here needs to be

interpreted in the light of other teaching. Didn’t

Jesus tell a story about a master who when he finds

his servants ready for him turns around and serves

them instead (12:37)? And later on doesn’t he talk

about himself as one who serves (22:37)? It is more

likely that these sayings of Jesus were retained in the

gospel as a warning to Christian leaders not to get

caught up in their own self-importance. Leadership,

for Jesus, is always a service, not a prize.

2016 Social Justice Statement:

Perth Launch Heralds Personal Story

Described as a text that will touch the heart of every person in our society, the Australian Catholic Bishops’ 2016-2017 Social Justice Statement has been launched locally in Perth by Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton. A Place at the Table: Social Justice in an Ageing Society was launched on Tuesday, 20 September in front of an audience of both young and older faces at the Redemptorist Monastery in North Perth, following the national launch earlier this month. The statement highlights the ageing of our population – rightly described as ‘the great success story of human development’ – and the need to support and value older people in Australian life, while fighting the ‘throw-away’ culture that threatens their sanctity and dignity.
