The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11–12, 2020
A Note from Our Pastor,
I hope you all had a relaxing Independ-ence Holiday week-end. The prior weekend, the last
weekend in June, as I mentioned earlier, I traveled to Pennsylvania for the Ordination and Mass of Thanksgiving of (formerly Deacon, and now) Father Shawn Simchock. It was an honor to represent our St. Agatha Parish where Shawn served on weekends this past academic year. As are we, the State of Pennsylva-nia is requiring masks and 6-foot social distance. But even with the restrictions and the smaller num-ber of people allowed into the Ca-thedral of St. Peter in Scranton for the Ordination on June 27th, it was still a beautiful ceremony. His Mass of Thanksgiving was cele-brated the next day in St. Faustina Church in Nanticoke, PA where Shawn served as a seminarian for at least one summer, and where he will begin his ministry as priest. I
was able to take several photo-graphs of both Masses. Where you see Fr. Shawn and me wearing white vestments, those pictures were taken at his Ordination. I did get a shot of the moment of Ordination where you can see Bishop Bambera imposing hands on Shawn’s head, the ritual gesture imparting the Sacrament of
Holy Orders. You can also see that we all were wear-ing masks. The next day, even though I was concele-brating Shawn’s Mass of Thanksgiving, I did get a shot of Father Shawn rais-ing the chalice and the pat-
en (dish) with the Host at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer – the “Through Him, with Him,” etc. You’ll also note a picture of the two of us in our green vestments in the sacristy after the Mass. I pray that Shawn will be a faithful
and loving minister of our Great High Priest Jesus Christ in his service to the people of his Parish of St. Faustina and his Diocese of Scranton. I pray also that he will experience the joy and satisfaction that priestly ministry provides, as I have been so blessed to receive these past 35 years and especially in my last 4 years here as your pastor. His hope and mine is that he will be able to return to St. Agatha’s at a future date to celebrate Mass for us. In addition to livestreaming our weekday Masses, this past Monday we began once again celebrating the 9am daily Mass in the upper church with a congregation. The numbers so far have been moderate, and in addition to some folks who were daily Mass participants prior to the pandemic, these daily Masses provide an opportunity for those who have been somewhat hesitant about returning to weekend Mass to now have the opportunity to be in Church, listening to God’s word and sharing in the Eucharist with fewer people present. In addition to our hearing Confessions by appointment, we have also begun regular celebration of the Sacrament of Reconcili-ation (Confession) each Wednesday evening in the back of-fice/library off the Gathering Space from 6:30 to 8pm. There will be one exception this month. On Wednesday July 29th there will be no Confessions because the Sacrament of Confirmation will be con-ferred here that evening at 5 and 7pm for some of our 10th-grade Confirmation can-didates.
Also, please note that during weekends in July and August we’ll be celebrating First Holy Communion
for our girls and boys from St. Agatha Faith Formation program and St. Agatha School. On Saturday July 18, August 1, August 8, and Aug. 15 at 1:30 in the afternoon we’ll have Masses entirely dedicated to the First Holy Communion recipients and their families. But on Sundays at the 11am and 5pm Masses be-
ginning this Sunday July 12th we’ll have from one to four children receiving their First Holy Communion at these Sun-day Masses together with the rest of those participating at those Sunday Masses. It has been a long wait for our Confir-mation candidates and First Communion children and their families. It will be wonderful to be able to celebrate these Sacraments with them beginning this month. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
One final note from me: next weekend July 18-19 our Youth Ministry is holding another Bottle and Can Drive to support the upcoming week of service. I bet many of you have stacked up somewhere on your property quite a few empties that you haven’t been able to redeem because of the COVID19 restrictions. Well, our Youth Ministry here at St. Agatha’s will be happy to take them off your hands next weekend, so please spread the word, especially among your neighbors whom you have a hard time seeing because of the piles of bottles and cans on their property!
Have a blessed week! Fr. Palardy
THE WEEKLY UPDATE
THEME: Discipleship—opening our hearts to Jesus’ word and acting upon it.
Hearing the Gospel re-read today, what words or phrases in the reading strike you? What image from this reading lingers in your mind?
Gospel : Matthew 13:1-9
On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”
Thank you for your patience as we work to get the air condi-tioning in the Church working properly. The initial delay in activating the system was due to the requirement that we check and replace all of the air filters before use, and because of the restrictions necessitated by the Covid-19 crisis, it was slower than usual getting the work completed. The advice we have received from the Archdiocese Risk Management De-partment is that it is preferable at this time to rely on natural air circulation when possible, but that it is safe to use the A/C system. So going forward we should be all set and the Church should feel more comfortable for the rest of the summer. Since we now have a new budget in place For Fiscal Year 2021, we have a new Weekly Offertory target which is $1,745 less than last year. We did meet the target this past weekend, largely because a number of parishioners made contributions representing multiple weeks or even months of missed donations because of the pandemic or future dona-tions in anticipation of being away for part or all of the sum-mer. We are very appreciative of their generosity and com-mitment to the parish. Last year on this same weekend our total was $12,733, a difference of almost $1,400. There are a few factors of note here. First, our in-pew donations have averaged about $3,300 per week. Since it seems like the re-strictions on Mass attendance will be in place for the foresee-able future, and if past experience is any guide at all, we probably won’t see that number increase, and it may even decrease over the course of the summer. Second, we see a consistently higher amount of mail in/drop off contributions on the first weekend of the month. This has been a historical trend and is borne out by the fact that our highest totals thus far have been the first weekends of June and July. Finally, the amount given electronically has increased steadily – even before the Covid-19 crisis. In January the weekly electronic amount was $2,851 which rose to $3,343 in February and now is at $4,310. So the more we can shift from in person to online donations the better it is for our financial picture, mak-ing it more predictable and less susceptible to outside influ-ences. It’s also very convenient. It’s now easier than ever to begin donating this way. Just go to the parish website at www.stagathaparish.org and click on “Giving” in the upper right heading and then click on “Online Giving”. If you have any questions or need assistance in setting his up, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time.

We ask anyone in attendance at Sunday Masses to fill out an online form so that we can have accurate contact information in case the need to contact attendees arises. You only need to fill out the form and leave your infor-mation one time.
If we were to discover that someone at any given Mass tests positive for COVID-19 in the following weeks, we want to be able to inform all of you so that, in consulta-tion with your physician, you can take the appropriate steps. Please note that any notice will not include the name of the person who tested positive, which will be kept confidential, but only the Mass (date and time) which they attended and any other relevant non-personal information.
Even if you do not choose to leave your name and con-tact information, please know that we will make any an-nouncement of a positive test on the parish website as well, so please check the website on a regular basis. Recently you may have received a letter asking for your support of this year’s Catholic Appeal.
As seen on the Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Appeal website:
My Dear Friends in Christ,
As we all proceed through these challenging times, please know of my prayers for you and your loved ones. Truly, our lives have been greatly impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19). However, we must al-ways remember that our faith means we are never alone, even in the most difficult times. With faith and hope we can overcome even the most complex chal-lenges in life.
While many aspects of life have come to a standstill, the work of our diocesan and parish ministries contin-ues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. Your support of the Catholic Appeal will make an immediate differ-ence as we attempt to continue serving all our broth-ers and sisters in need. I am truly grateful for your support.
May God bless you and your families.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
The Catholic Appeal is the annual fund that supports more than 51 central ministries that enrich parish life, Catholic schools and the lives of those who turn to the Church for assistance. A percentage of funds raised are returned to the parishes as rebates to be used for their local parish programs.
We ask that you consider donating to this annual appeal by giving through the mail or on-line. For more infor-mation, please visit: www.bostoncatholicappeal.org.

SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS
“Nothing compared with the glory”
Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. —Romans 8:18
The first sentence of today’s second reading from the let-ter of St. Paul to the Romans stopped me in my tracks. How relevant St. Paul’s words are for us today. We all are suffering in this present time due to the pandemic and the resulting economic crisis. Speaking for myself, it’s easy to get caught up in all the things we can’t do, including singing the praises of God together. For those whose min-istry to the church is through music, these last few months have been marked with real suffering, as we have been prevented from serving the Lord in the way He has called us to serve.
But this time of suffering not only will pass; it will be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. I cling to this hope, knowing that the choirs of angels sing perpetually to God in Heaven and praying that I will join them someday. But I also hope for a more literal interpre-tation of seeing the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (cf. Ps. 27:13); that is, right here on earth, in St. Agatha Parish, when our beautiful church building will again be filled with the joyful sound of choirs and parish-ioners singing together.
Until that time, may we continue to sing in our homes and in our hearts. Let us pray that the Lord reveals his glory to us, and helps us see that this pause in our singing really is nothing at all compared to its eventual, glorious return.
In Christ,
Julie Fay, Music Director and Organist
