Lent: a Season to Remember God—a Time to Ponder!
St. Agatha Parish
Pre-registration is helpful but not necessary.
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15–16, 2020
A Note from Our Pastoral Associate,
Dear fellow parishioners:
I wish to thank Fr. Palardy and Fr. Jay for their enthusiastic endorsement of the ALPHA
program which starts Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
WHAT is ALPHA? A video ser ies focusing on the essential core message of the Gospel.
WHAT is a Session like? Gathered together in small groups, with a facilitator, over a simple meal, in a relaxed setting, the ALPHA videos are discussion starters. These stunning videos—filmed around the world—help us ask questions about God. Some of the questions are: how can I have faith, why suffering, how does God guide us, and who is the Holy Spirit? The evening star ts at 6:30 PM with dinner and will conclude promptly at 8:30 PM.
WHO is ALPHA for? It is especially pertinent for those who would like to awaken their faith—perhaps you have been coming to Church on a regular basis but don’t exactly feel connected with God or you have lots of questions. New to the parish—get to know your new parish family!
WHY ALPHA? It is simple. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (JN 10:10). In my years of ministry, one of the things that gives me the greatest joy is when I encounter people who were once indifferent or complacent about faith (and let’s face it—that is all of us at one time or another) who discover a deep, abiding joy and enthusiasm for life that comes through knowing Jesus better and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
WHO is Running ALPHA? More than twenty of your fellow parishioners—are providing hospitality, serving as table facilitators, and those who are praying—providing
spiritual palanca—for those attending. My heartfelt thanks for the enthusiasm of this particular team who are ready and willing to journey with you.
HOW can I help? Have you already been to lots of study sessions? We would love your support of ALPHA at St. Agatha parish through offering prayer/palanca. You are welcome to come to dinner and watch the video, then when the discussions begin, please consider going to the Chapel and praying that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide the conversations. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for your quiet prayer time. Consider this time of prayer and support your LENTEN practice. Please see the form to sign up for prayer time and please let us know if you will be joining us for dinner.

NEXT WEEK’S SPECIAL COLLECTION: Support of the Church Around the World
Next week’s second collection will support the Church in those underdeveloped areas of the world. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Church in Africa and in Central and Eastern Eu-rope and three important national Catholic missions: the Mili-tary Archdiocese, Home Missions, and the Black and Indian Missions.
Your generosity will help fund the spiritual, educational and humanitarian needs of the Church around the world. For more information about each of these organizations, go to their websites: CRS (www.usccb.org/crscollection); Church in Afri-ca (www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/solidarity-fund-for-africa/index.cfm); Church in Central and Eastern Europe (www.usccb.org/catholicgiving/opportunities-for-giving/centraland-easterneurope/collection/index.cfm); Military Archdiocese (www.milarch.org); Catholic Home Mis-sions (http://www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/catholic-home-missions-appeal/index.cfm) and Black and Indian Missions (blackandindianmission.org/).
Chloe McGrath, a 7th Grader from St. Agatha’s School, would like to thank the parish community for their support in her recent coat drive which she ran in conjunction with Anton’s Cleaners. Our school came in 2nd and received an award of $500. Chloe will run the coat drive again starting in October.
THEME: God’s Commandments are a way of life.
When you hear the word commandment, what do you feel? What did Jesus mean when he said he did not come to abolish but to fulfill the law of the prophets?
Gospel : Matthew 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with brother will be liable to judgment.
“You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
“Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.”“
Pastoral Planning
February 16 ~ Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time It’s all about the Law this week. Sirach gives us great in-sight, “If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you;” The choice is ours to live by the law or not. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus sets the bar high for us—it’s not simply about doing good and avoiding evil, there’s more: “whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” What kind of ex-ample do you set with adults and with children? Pray for what you need: Kindness? Patience? Temperate speech? Self-control?
My column for this week’s bulletin was just about complete and ready to submit when something happened to change the direction the column took entirely! So, sadly, you will have to wait until next week to read my scintillating column about the importance of online giving! The two parishion-ers who have been organizing the St. Agatha Parish Respect Life Baby Shower—Paul and Mary McDonough—stopped by the Rectory to drop off the cash proceeds from this past weekend’s shower. St. Agatha parishioners certainly came through for this vitally important cause, donating $2,665 which will go directly to Friends of the Unborn. Fr. Palardy also has decided to supplement this collection with a dona-tion from the Parish of $335 to being the total to an even $3,000. But the good news doesn’t stop there! Mary & Paul reported that they were overwhelmed by the amount of new baby clothes and accessories that people donated. In fact they mentioned that this was one of the best—if not THE best—baby showers ever. Several people who attended mentioned attending last summer’s Night for Life at Veter-ans Stadium in Quincy and how moved and energized they were by that evening’s events. Other people have men-tioned the recent efforts in some states—including here in Massachusetts—to make it easier to abort a baby as their motivation for becoming more involved. Whatever the rea-son, there seems to be some momentum building in this area. Our Parish Mission Statement calls us to ”… accept our responsibility for giving witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ”. What better way to do that than advocating for the lives of the unborn? Several weeks ago we talked about the stewardship tripod of time, talent and treasure. While “treasure” is crucial, time and talent are equally important. If you feel called to share any of your gifts to support this cause, please give me a call or send me an email.

Is there more to life? I also have asked this important question and other similar questions. On March 4, 2020 beginning at 6:30 PM and concluding promptly at 8:30PM, St. Agatha will hold the ALPHA program. ALPHA is a program conducted in parishes throughout the United States and the world. At ALPHA you share a meal, watch a professionally produced video and participate in relaxed and intriguing conversa-tions. I would like to personally invite you to this unique opportunity to ask questions and to search together.
The goal of ALPHA is to create a fun engaging oppor-tunity for people to explore faith together. ALPHA isn’t about getting answers to theological questions but rather finding out who God is and how can I have a rela-tionship with God. It isn’t searching for facts about God but rather connecting with God and our spirituality.
Do you ever look around at Mass or at other parish events and think “we have a lot of great people in this parish, it would be fun to get to know them better”? The format of ALPHA is meant to form community. Are you new to the parish? Come to ALPHA—faith lived with others is always a lot more engaging! Did you just have your child baptized? Take time to journey with others like you and share ideas about spirituality.
I know people who have participated in ALPHA and they share how ALPHA helped develop lasting relationships and Church became more personal for them.
ALPHA is a relaxed, non-judgmental, non-confrontational way for people:
To openly talk about faith.
To ask questions together with other parishioners, and to explore prayer all around the joyful setting of sharing a meal.
ALPHA provides you and me a great opportunity to in-vite family and friends who we miss here in our com-munity. In my exper ience, it is always easier to invite people to something when there is food involved! LENT is a great time to go a little deeper so invite a friend and “come and see” what’s happening here at St. Agatha par-ish. For those of you with children there will be FREE CHILD CARE—and babies are welcome to stay with mom and dad.
God bless you and hope to see you at ALPHA.
Dan Biagiotti, Parishioner

Thank you for your generous donations of soup! We collected over 400 cans of soup to stock the shelves of the Milton Food Pantry and Quincy Interfaith Social Services.
No Sessions February 18-19-20. Have a wonderful February vacation!
Wednesday, February 26 is Ash Wednesday. We will have a service in the upper Church starting promptly at 4:00 pm to distr ibute ashes to the Faith Formation children. All Wednesday Faith Formation students and catechist will go directly to the Church rather than the SAS cafeteria for the start of sessions, the doors to the Church will open at 3:45 pm. Families who are dropping their children off for their session are welcome to come to the service and receive their ashes. Parents may also receive their ashes when picking their child up in the SAS cafeteria from Faith Formation.
The week of February 25-26-27 we invite parents into the school cafeteria at 4:45 pm to hear from some of our parishioners about an exciting program for adults starting in March. The children will join their parents in the cafeteria at 5:00 pm for dismissal.
We follow the Milton Public School system for all school cancellations including those due to inclement weather. If Faith Formation has to cancel
during the school day we will do so via email and noted on our website.
It seems like we just put away the Christmas decorations, but Lent is around the corner! Often we think of Lent as a time of “giving up,” but in many ways, adding to our spiritual
lives can help us embrace the traditional disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving that bring us closer to God.
If you’re looking for a way to deepen your spirituality this Lent, consider joining our music ministry. Besides the social and health benefits of making music in a group, entering into the ministry of singing for God with one an-other can help you with:
Prayer. Choir members pray together dur ing re-hearsals, lifting our minds and hearts to God. In addi-tion, the psalms and hymns we sing help us explore and deepen our faith.
Fasting. We usually think of fasting as abstaining from food, but it can also mean refraining from activi-ties or habits that don’t promote our spiritual growth. Time spent in rehearsals and preparing music for Mass means less time watching TV, scrolling through social media or browsing on Amazon.
Almsgiving. What better way to give of your time and talent than to help make our liturgies more beauti-ful through the ministry of music?
Our music ministry welcomes new singers and instrumen-talists with open arms and hearts. It’s okay if you’ve nev-er sung in a choir before, or if you don’t read music. We’d love to have you! Drop me a line at [email protected].
In Christ,
Julie Fay, Music Director
