Dear Friends,
Whatever else we think about the political events of 2016 - about which
there is sure to be much disagreement- we can all agree on this one thing-
The Experts were confounded! The 2017 we face as a world and as a nation will have a very different flavour to the one we might have
predicted a year ago. For some, this will be an exciting, even a bracing
prospect, for others a deeply depressing and worrying one.
We tend to think of Christianity as a well-established and old faith, one
with few surprises after 2000 years. At the centre of our faith sits the
Christmas story. ‘Everybody knows’ (people might say) ‘about Bethlehem,
and no room at the inn, and the shepherds and wise men’. Yes, on one
level everyone does know, yet has this ‘everyone’ really taken in the
meaning of the story?
This question forms the basis of a hymn by John Bell and Graham Maule. (832 in St Catherine’s new hymn book).
Who would think that what was needed
To transform and save the earth
Might not be a plan or army,
Proud in purpose, proved in worth?
Who would think, despite derision,
That a child might lead the way?
God surprises earth with heaven,
Coming here on Christmas Day.
When the Messiah was prophesied in the Old Testament, most of the
prophecies concerned a powerful King like David to overthrow the pagan
authorities that were governing Israel. It’s not surprising: in this world, the
only way to deal with force is by an even greater force. Yet the power
we see in Jesus is the power of love which is born in and grows from
human hearts.
This doesn’t always make for an easy life. Sometimes it’s much easier to
impose something by force than to wait for people to choose it, but Jesus
waits for us to invite him in. As it says in the prologue to St John’s Gospel,
which we will read once again at Christmas: ‘To all who received Him
God gave power to become children of God.’
The sight of a new-born baby is a touching one which has melted the

HOLY TRINITY NEWS Journeying
Last weekend, on my way to Kent to visit family, I used my SATNAV for the first
time! I’d had to have a lesson on it the week before to feel even remotely
confident! She, named “Fenella” after Fenella Fielding, who had the same sort of
voice (Gosh, that dates me!) guided me very competently up the A3 and round
the pitfalls of the M25, kindly pointing out which lane to be in at the A21 exit and
giving me plenty of advance warning for the turnings. I couldn’t help feeling what
a modern miracle it was that somewhere up in the stratosphere, a satellite was
charting the progress of one small car among the thousands belting along the
motorway. AND I could even listen to Classic FM between her sweetly-spoken
bits of advice!
How different to the journeys of Jesus’s day! I suppose that without SATNAVS,
maps or even main roads, people just travelled along well-worn paths, using the
same trails that their ancestors had travelled by, knowing the dangers by hearsay
and experience (for example, everyone knew the perils of the dangerous
Jerusalem to Jericho road!) Roman roads, when they arrived, were considered a
marvel of the Ancient World!
How nervous Mary and Joseph must have been as they travelled the track from
Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judaea, Mary in the last stages of her
pregnancy.
I wonder which country lanes the shepherds used as they left their sheep during
that starry angelic night and came to the courtyard of the inn to gaze at the
new-born baby.
And later on, what a journey for the Magi, steering by the stars, and one
particular Star, through foreign lands to what they thought would be a King’s
Palace!
Plus the alternative route home, to keep out of Herod’s way!
And finally, Mary, Joseph and the child, fleeing over the border to escape from
the king’s paranoid anger (there’s a lovely wooden mosaic of this in Aswan
Coptic Cathedral!)
The world might have been a smaller place in BC/AD but people were a lot
braver about journeying through it!
I don’t know if there are more dangers in journeying through life today, but there
are certainly subtler ones! With more choices, more opportunities and a more
sophisticated way of life, people don’t necessarily seem happier, and I think we
take less notice of the simple pleasures…. a good walk in glorious countryside,
time with family and friends, a warm place to live.
6
Perhaps we should keep our spiritual SATNAV turned on and
listen to God’s voice a little more!
So, as I write this last article for the Link, may I wish you all a
simple and happy Christmas, and trouble-free journeying into 2017.
Gill
I’ve been writing the Trinity Times section of the Link since 2006,
so, as we finish 2016,it’s definitely TIME TO STOP!
The next edition of the Link will be the February one, and the articles for it will need
to be in to Joan at the Hub halfway through January. I’m confidently expecting the
Trinity Times, in whatever form, to be there SOMEWHERE, but not from me!
So…..very best wishes to the person who’ll be writing the February section…and
thank you!
Gill
And a swansong………, to be sung to the tune of “Daisy, Daisy” (and yes, that dates
me too!)
SATNYMPHONY
SATNAV, SATNAV, give me your answer, do,
I just want to get where I’m going to!
The lorries whizz past in a hurry,
I’m nervous and starting to worry,
But your calm voice
Will give me the choice
Of a route that will get me through!
SATNAV, SATNAV, show me the quickest way,
It’s all round me, four lanes on a motorway,
I don’t like the fast overtaking,
The sudden slow-downs and the braking,
I’ll be relieved
When you tell me to leave
At the exit that’s next, I pray.
SATNAV, SATNAV, got there and feeling good!
On the right road to Tonbridge and Paddock’s Wood,
I’m grateful for all your mapping,
(And none of it caught me napping!)
I was pleased to know
The way to go
And relied on you more than I should!

GHANA NEWS
I’ve had a long letter from Barnabas, who took his last service at
St Andrew’s Techiman on October 30th, and then moved to Yamfo on
November 4th. He wishes me to express his appreciation, via the Link, to
all his friends, his present parish link with St Blasius, Shanklin, and anyone
“who in diverse ways has contributed to the last four years at
St Andrew’s.” He writes “ We were privileged to have you as friends and
one family at a distance, working together for the Kingdom of God.” He
expresses the hope that the unfinished work at Techiman will be
completed to the Glory of God.
Their new “station” is at Yamfo, twelve miles away from Sunyani, the
regional capital. He will combine being Parish Priest of this farming
community with teaching, Chaplaincy and administration at the Senior
High School. He says that the church only has a handful of people and he’s
worried that he’s come to yet another building project (a new chapel) with a much weaker congregation than at St Andrew’s. He’s also worried
about combining the schoolwork and school Sunday services (6.30 to 8.00
a.m.) with the challenges of the church in the community. He has
accommodation at the school, but it isn’t that brilliant, and has meant that
Monica, his wife, expecting their next child, has been left temporarily at
Techiman. He ends his letter by saying, simply “It is only God who will be
my source of hope. Pray for us.”
His new address is

THE CHERUB
Rejoice dear friends, be glad sing carols loud and clear,
Our birthday boy will be with us, that is what I like to hear,
Spend your Christmas days with family sing carols round the tree,
Let joy and happiness surround you let it be so clear to see
Ignore the drabness of old January and February chill
our winter can be very harsh let us beat it with good will,
Let us continue to be happy, as we were on Christmas Day,
Be thankful, ever joyful in everything we say.
Epiphany, the wise men came to see our little boy,
To bring him love and presents and to fill his heart with joy.
Those gifts seem very strange to give a baby a few days old:
A pot of myrrh? Of frankincense? A bar of solid gold ?
Of course there were no teddy bears or modernistic toys,
but then, perhaps those wise men knew not much of little boys.
However, everyone was happy, to give is such a pleasure,
a gift is always valuable whatever kind of treasure.
How about a rattle? Or perhaps a little drum?
I know he liked a kiss or two especially from his mum.
All babies are observant, they know just what they like,
Ah ! But he really is too young to ride that fascinating bike.
I really had forgotten it was two thousand years ago and more,
There were no bikes or scooters then, though something nice I am sure.
Some people, ever skilful would carve toys from lengths of wood
the children who received them thought the toys were very good.
Once again, this year the retiring collection at the
Carols by Candlelight service will be taken for
EMBRACE THE MIDDLE EAST.
Bearing in mind this situation in those counties at this time
please give generously. Thank you.

A CHRISTMAS STORY. December 25th is a very important date to remember: the birthday of Jesus.
It is worth preparing early to decorate our Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is
a living sign that Jesus is very much in our thoughts at this time, exactly as He
should be. Let us enjoy our lovely communion in church together.
All the cards we send and receive bearing good wishes, the carols we sing
which mean such a lot in their wonderful verses. To listen and watch the choir of
Kings College on television upon Christmas Eve and to hear our own
voices joining in praising Jesus in his wonderful, humble birth. God's greatest gift
to us all. "Happy birthday, Jesus."
The feast of our Lord... and what a feast, rejoice and be glad......but wait....let us
spare a thought for Mary, Joseph and their donkey, who were obliged to travel
that long, hot dusty trail to Bethlehem to attend a census. Where on their arrival
they could find nowhere to sleep. The whole town was full because of the census.
However, the landlord of the local pub (known as the Bethlehem inn) offered
to let them bed down in one of his stables along with the animals and that
was where our dear Lord Jesus was born. They had no cot so they laid him gently
in a manger for his bed. All the animals looked on in amazement especially when a
multitude of angels arrived to sing so beautifully in praise of this wonderful event.
Some shepherds came down from the fields bringing a few lambs with them.
I wish I could have been there too.
And now we must look forward to a new year; 2017.
New hopes new prospects. Let us go forward together with joy in our hearts.
Optimism must be our keyword.
A happy new year from Cherub Billy and Ted.

Please pray for Ghana as the country holds its general
election on the 7th December. One of our friends, Dr Adam
Asaanah, is standing as the candidate for an area called Tempane,
in the extreme north of the country.
The country has been politically stable for many years, and there
has been a steady improvement in the road infrastructure,
education provision and medical facilities. However, Ghana is
still a poor but developing country, and a good national
government is essential if the improvements are to be main-
tained.
