OU Global Mission Outreach Trip Planned for January 13-19, 2013

Our church is very active in serving needs in our local communi-

ty, but we also seek to be a church that serves the

wider world. To accomplish this we are planning a

trip through UMVIM (United Methodist Volun-

teers in Mission) to an impoverished area in the

Bahamas to help repair and build homes.

We are looking for people who are willing to give of their

time and service. For more information on Bahamas Meth-

odist Habitat, check out their website http://

redtiedesigns.com/bmh//

We are also asking all trip participants to attend an UMVIM

mission and outreach training, led by Amanda Gordon. Our

church is hosting a training event on Saturday, August 18, 9:00-

4:30 in Wesley Hall. Even if you cannot attend the Bahamas trip,

this UMVIM training will be helpful for those who want to par-

ticipate in other future mission trips at OU, so all are encouraged

to attend.

Please give these opportunities your prayerful consideration and

contact Claire Dobbs for more information or to sign up for the

training and/or mission trip [email protected] or 662-

801-5608.

Summer Update

As I reflect on the incredible summer I have had as OU’s summer ministry intern, I am reminded that all summers end, and fall

begins. With the beginning of fall comes beginnings of school years, and as many of you know, I am beginning the end of my

Millsaps education. As I think about my past four years at Millsaps, I am reminded that it all began here at OU and here in Ox-

ford. I would not be finishing my time at Millsaps if it wasn’t for my beginnings in this church. As most of you know, I grew up in

this church and haven’t really been able to leave it even after starting college in Jackson. I have stayed connected with OU, and I

am so incredibly blessed to have been given the opportunity to be a summer ministry intern at home. I have gotten the necessary

hands-on experience in a church setting before beginning my journey in divinity school. I have been given experience with writing

pastoral prayers, offertory prayers, and was even given the opportunity to offer a short sermon at a Wednesday night service. I

have volunteered at Interfaith , where I have been able to see some of the greatest needs in our community. All of these examples

are experiences that I don’t take for granted, and experiences I would not have been able to get if it wasn’t for Claire and Warren

and you all inviting me into this opportunity. Thank you for a wonderful summer!

Chelsey Overstreet, OU’s Summer Ministry Intern

OU’s 100 Active Wrap-Up The biggest aspect of my internship was creating OU’s 100 Active in Outreach with the help of 71 of you as volunteers on the 5

projects. We had projects at the Wesley Foundation, More Than A Meal, Camp Lake Stephens, Habitat for Humanity and the

Boys & Girls Club. We didn’t quite meet our goal of 100, but 71 is still incredible. The response for OU’s 100 Active was amaz-

ing. We did it together, and that is what the church is about. If you would like to organize OU’s next outreach project, come up

with an idea and talk to Claire!

Meet Our New Bishop: James E. Swanson, Jr.

Clergy and lay members elected five

new bishops during Jurisdictional Con-

ference at Lake Junaluska at the end of

July. Mississippi’s new bishop is James

E. Swanson, Jr., who served as bishop

of the Holston Conference.

Before becoming a bishop, he was the

District Superintendent in the South

Georgia Conference. He served as pas-

tor at St. Mary’s Road United Methodist Church in Co-

lumbus, GA, where he grew the active membership from

16 members to over 500 in weekly attendance.

Bishop Swanson earned a Bachelor of Science degree

from Southern Bible College and Master of Divinity de-

gree from C. H. Mason Seminary, ITC, Atlanta, GA.

We look forward to working with Bishop Swanson in the

coming years. Welcome to the Mississippi Conference!

Welcome Back, Students!

See these smiling faces of stu-

dents? They will be returning

very soon! Now is the time to

begin preparing our hearts to

receive the bulk of our college/

grad students back to school

and back to their home at

OU. Yes, many of the stu-

dents who come through our doors are calling this church their

home. We need to be preparing that home for their return.

They need all of us to welcome them back and take an interest

in them. As you see students sitting on your row at church, be

sure they know you care that they chose to come to church. As

you see them in the hallways, stop to greet them and make sure

they know about all the church services and Sunday School

(10:00 in the Prayer Room).

WELCOME BACK STUDENTS - Sunday, August 19, we

will be officially welcoming back our students for the Fall Se-

mester as well as hosting a potluck luncheon for them after the

10:55 service. We look forward to everyone participating!

HOST FAMILY OPPORTUNITY - This year we will be

connecting Host Families to students. This will be an oppor-

tunity for you to get to know some students better as well as

connect them to the church in a more significant way. If you

are interested in learning more about how you can be a HOST

FAMILY, contact Allyson Willis (662.231.9929 or
