3This issue of the Old Print Gallery Showcase offers a wide spectrum of subjects, printing techniquesand eras. City plans and maps range from early Washington, D.C. plans to a collection of small ear-

ly 20th century map guides of popular U.S. cities. Since it is the season for college graduations, wedevote several pages to college views and activities. With spring comes baseball, which is representedby four dynamic prints. Also, with spring comes rain, portrayed by four scenes, showing the glisten-ing energy it brings. For many, the circus carries childhood nostalgia and our selection of printsshows the excitement and color experienced under the big top.

Our recent gallery show, focused on aquatints. Aquatint is an etching technique thatcreates areas of tone through the use of a powdered or ground resin that is sprinkled on a metal

plate prior to being bitten by etching acid. Although primarily used in the 18th and 19th centuries asa medium to reproduce the delicate fluidity and transparency of watercolors and paintings, the aqua-tint survived as an artist’s medium because of its atmospheric effects and flat wash properties.

featured the talented printmakers of the 20th and 21st century who experimented and pushedthe boundaries of aquatint’s potential. Varying between flat color planes and incredible plate tex-ture, these artists demonstrated a fluid and experimental handling of the medium. The resulting im-ages have an expressive strength and visual intensity that relay the ingenuity to be found in the worldof original printmaking. Several works from the show are included in this Showcase. On the back

cover is an example of an early 19th century aquatint and stipple engraving.

In the gallery, our current show, explores how printmakers choose to depict thenatural world through its evolution and transformation into the modern era. Although united inthe theme of landscape, the works are realized through differing conceptual and methodical ap-proaches. Some, like Robert Kipniss, use the velvety blacks and luminous whites of a mezzotint toinfuse landscapes with a poetic melancholy and stillness- depicting a terrain seemingly untouched bythe viewer or even the artist. Others, like Harry Wickey and Gerald Scheck, use the chaotic cross-hatching of a drypoint needle or the unpredictable acidic bite of the aquatint to evoke the untamed, wild majesty of the natural world. Seen together, the prints selected for the show unveil the emo-tional power and pull of the natural world, a beauty and mystery that both entrap and enchant art-ists, and serve as a deep pool of inspiration for their work.

6. Plan of the City of Washington. J.Good. Published by J. Good for inclusionin the Literary Magazine, London. Copperplate engraving, Feb. 1, 1793. On January24, 1791, President George Washingtonannounced the Congressionally designatedpermanent location of the national capital,a diamond-shaped ten-mile tract at the con-fluence of the Potomac and Eastern BranchRivers. The original survey of the 100square mile diamond shaped "district" wasundertaken by Andrew Ellicott and Benja-min Banneker (a free slave). In March of1791, Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant wasappointed by George Washington to pre-pare the plan for the city itself with Ellicottas his assistant. Unfortunately, L'Enfantturned out to be very difficult to work with. Eventually both Washington and Jefferson becamedisgusted with L'Enfant's obstinacy which led to his being suspended in 1792 and outright terminationin 1793. Ellicott took over the project using L'Enfants plan as a base. The first five maps were engravedand printed in America, the sixth, seventh and eighth in London. This is the seventh printed view andappeared in the 1793 edition of the Literary Magazine And British Review, a British produced monthlyperiodical. The rather primitively engraved Eagle and shield cartouche adds a decorative element to thisparticular map and visually separates it from the American imprints of Thackera & Vallance, Hill, andTiebout.
