THE NOSE Your nose sits in the middle of your face. You can not look at your nose without a mirror. If you try you go cross-eyed. Your nose helps you to breathe. Your nose helps you to feel nice smells like flowers or soap. It also helps you to detect dangerous chemicals in the air. The human nose has two openings. They are called nostrils. The nostrils are divided by the nasal septum. The inside of the nose is covered in a thin moist layer of tissue called mucous membrane. We all have small nose hair too. They clean the air you breathe in. Dust and other particles are cleaned by the nose hair and you sneeze to get rid of them. A sneeze can travel up to 160 km/hour. That is a very fast going car`s speed. To stop our germs and viruses to fly around we need to cover our mouth when sneezing. Draw a picture about how you sneeze in a proper way. Humans have about 5 million smell cells to feel different scents. Dogs have about 250 million. They can smell far better than us.They can feel smells we did not even notice. They can smell even emotions like sadness or fear. Do you have a dog? Did you know for dogs we stink, but they love it.

YOUR THINKING PAGE What kind of smells do you like?

Cake Garden Rain Sushi What kind of smells have you noticed in these places? Can you name some?

In the streets In your home At the shops In the air

In a car At the market At the dentist At a playground Can you explain these sentences?

- Do not be nosey! - Keep your nose out of it!

What do you think?

- Which animal is best at smelling? - Do you think snakes can smell? - How about honey bees? Can they smell anything?

A bear can smell a dead animal from 20 miles. That is more than the distance between Gilmore School and Metrotown Mall. Bears smell better than any other animals.

Snakes have nostrils but they are not used to smell. They pick air particles by their tongue and the brain analyzes them as a smell.

Honey Bees can smell better than dogs. They can be trained in 5 hours to detect a bomb!
