CENTRAL SCHOOL DRESS CODE

As the warm weather approaches it is important to remind our students of the Central School Dress Code. The underlying principle of the dress code is that our students come to school prepared to work each day. They should not be dressed for a day at the beach or the mall. Students, regardless or age, are NOT permitted to wear inappropriate clothing which includes:

Clothes bearing written statements or images that do not promote a positive and safe environment, that are racist, suggestive or in bad taste, or that advertise alcohol, drug and tobacco products are not to be worn.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

The final meeting of our school council will be held on Tuesday May 26th at 6:30pm.

Our parents are planning a Dance-a-Rama for our students on Friday June 5th. Our theme this year is:

“A Day At The Beach”

Students should dress up for this event. No swimsuits please. Parent volunteers are needed to help on the day of the event. Please complete the slip attached and return it to the school if you can help on June 5th. More information will be sent home at a later date.

GRADE 8 GRADUATION

Plans for our grade 8 graduation are now underway. The date is set for Monday June 22nd, 2009, in the gymnasium at Central School.

More information about this event will be provided to our graduates and their parents at a later date.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

The junior kindergarten and senior kindergarten students new to Central School in September are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday May 21st, 2009. Parents will be receiving a letter informing them of the time scheduled for their child to come visit the class where they will meet fellow classmates and to introduce parents to the JK/SK program.

We are still accepting kindergarten registrations. If you haven’t already registered, please contact the school office very soon so that we can include your child in our preparations for September.

CLASS ORGANIZATION

We are in the beginning stages of planning for the next school year. At this time we expect that there may be a few split classes.

As a staff we meet together to place students in situations that are the best for them academically. A great deal of time is invested to provide the best placement for each and every student. Teachers try very hard to balance out the classes when they are created. There are many factors that are considered including:

• the balance of boys and girls whenever possible

• students that should be separated from each other for various reasons

• grouping of students that will be able to work at various ability levels

• whether the student is in a split grade this year

• treating all students fairly

Please be aware that we are not able to create classes based on student friendships.

We are not accepting requests for specific teachers. If you have educational concerns regarding your child that you wish the school to consider in class placement, please express these in writing prior to May 14th and submit them to Mrs. Hardyman.

Remember we want to create the best learning environment possible for each child.

Be a Germ Stopper!

Did you know that when you sneeze, you spread more than 10,000 germs and bacteria up to 12 feet away? Not only that, but the particles travel at speeds of 100 feet per second! Serious respiratory illnesses like influenza, and whooping cough are spread by: Coughing or sneezing and Unclean hands To help stop the spread of germs, Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands The germs will become trapped in the fabric and prevents them from being spread to others Put your used tissue in the waste basket immediately afterwards Clean your hands after coughing or sneezing with • soap and running warm water or an alcohol-based hand rub Make stopping germs easy: Keep tissues handy When you can’t get to a sink, have hand sanitizer available Be a role model: teach your children the proper way to cough and sneeze and we will all be healthier for it!

LIBRARY GRAND OPENING April 9, 2009 was a very eventful day at Central School. We started the day with the Honours Breakfast at 7:30am. The breakfast was to recognize students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who achieved honours in term 2. We were pleased to have Trustee Don Love and Superintendent Marilyn Hyatt as our special guests.

The library grand re-opening happened at 8:30 am. Our Director of Education, Warren Hoshizaki was on hand to help with the ribbon cutting ceremony. Trustee Don Love was also present.

We were extremely pleased that so many parents made the effort to visit the library with their child’s class. Each class had an opportunity to visit the different areas of the library collection.

New computers, a Smartboard and the Destiny Online Library catalog enhance the technology in the library and computer lab.

All of this was not possible without the support of our community. Thank you to all parents for supporting our fundraising.

A special thank you to the following volunteers: Mrs. Nicole Smith, Mrs Christine Clarke, Ms. Mary Beth Fitz, Ms. Hutchings, Mrs. Kerry-Bonneau and Mrs. Wilson.

Thank you to Mrs. Vera Moore for baking and donating cupcakes for over 400 students.

Thank you to the DSBN Plant Department for their assistance in coordinating the painting, floor replacement and lab rewiring: Mr. Ross Cole, Tech staff and our painter.

Runners Raise Over $10,000 for Charity at DSBN Road Race

More than 1,000 pairs of feet hit the pavement for a good cause at this year’s annual DSBN Road Race. Enthusiastic participants took part in either the 1 km Fun Run or the 5 km Road Race. When the final tally was recorded, the organizing committee was pleased to announce that over $10,000 of much needed funding had been raised and would be shared evenly by the Edu-cation Foundation of Niagara and Niagara Nutrition Partners. Funds were raised through the entry fees of participants, and by support from sponsors especially title sponsor PenFinancial Credit Union. Both organizations assist in supporting breakfast programs in schools by helping to organize volunteers and purchasing food for the programs. “Starting the day with a healthy breakfast gives children the nutrition and energy needed to be effective learners in school. Everyone was thrilled to make such a significant contribution to these organizations that do so much to support students in Niagara,” said organizer Scott Enns. Race results are posted at dsbnroadrace.com; a photo gallery from the day will be posted shortly.
