9 frame analysis Media Tiabah Hussain The 9 frames I will be analyzing are from the thriller the next three days. The next three days is
about a young couple whose life is turned upside down when the wife is accused of murdering her
boss after an argument they had. The director of the movie is Paul Haggis.
In this shot we are given the name of the distribution company Lionsgate. It uses low key lighting.
The colour black connotes darkness, the absence of light which fits the opening scene since the
whole film there is an absence of happiness because the wife is accused of murder and taken away
from her son. The colour black also represents evil, depression and death. There are no props used
in this scene. It uses a medium shot to introduce lionsgate film.
In this scene the main character John Brennan is driving the car fast which suggests he’s running
from someone or is in an emergency since he has a person in the back needing medical attention or
he might die. This scene uses low key lighting which is typical of the thriller genre. The shot used in
this scene is a close up of John’s face and his expression. The blood on his face connotes that he has
been in a fight. The colour red connotes that he is dangerous and also connotes war. War is shown
in this film when he goes against the police and breaks his wife out of jail.

which connotes the dark, depressing and the absence of light. There are no props used in this scene.
It also uses a medium shot to introduce the production company this was done similarly when they
introduced the distribution company.

also a close up of her face as well. This scene also uses low key lighting since they are in a restaurant
having dinner and the only lights on are lamp lights on various tables. The woman is wearing red
which connotes the powerful emotion of lust, passion and sex. It also shows a woman’s femininity as
well.

lighting used in this scene. There is also a close up shot of the actresses face. The prop used in this
scene is the glass that she is holding. The woman is wearing the colour blue which shows loyalty,
wisdom and trust. It is also a calming colour and has a calming effect. This shows that they want the
actress to be seen as loyal and wise.
In this scene the couple is walking towards their car after the wife had an argument with the other
woman. It uses a tracking shot and a medium shot. It uses low key lighting which is typical of the
thriller genre. The props used in this scene are a coat and a bag which the woman is holding. There
are cars parked in the background which suggests that they are in a car park walking to their car.
In this scene the woman is putting the duvet over her son’s sleeping form. The shot used in this
scene is a medium shot. It uses low key lighting as it is key to the genre. The props used in this scene
are the toys the woman has in her hand and also the toys on the bed. The colour white connotes
purity and innocence which of a small boy he has purity and innocence.

stairs. The man is wearing the colour blue which connotes loyalty and wisdom. This later becomes
true when the main protagonist John stays loyal to his wife and helps her get out of jail. The prop
used in this scene is the lamp used in the background. It uses low key lighting. It uses a medium
shot.
This scene is showing us what the production company is and who it is as well. In this scene we see
another production company. It also uses the colour black which is prevalent throughout the titles. It
uses a medium shot as well and also uses low key lighting in this shot. The colour black connotes
death, depression and sadness.
The title sequence establishes genre by having low key lighting which is used for the thriller genre.
The sound is tense throughout which is part of the thriller genre. It establishes character by creating
the conflict and situation on what the story is going to be based on. The narrative is based on the
main character and how the tension builds to the actual situation he is faced with. The title
sequence attracts the audience with the suspenseful music used and the creativeness of the title
sequence and the opening. The target audience for this is men and people who enjoy thriller movies
this is because men are people who like crime and like action in a movie. Paul Haggis produced the
movie but that is not evident in the title sequence which suggests it will be at the end of the movie.
