FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

It has been an action packed year for NISTians. NISTians made a huge splash in the Startup

Odisha event attended by the Hon’ble Chief Minister who handed the coveted Awards to budding

entrepreneurs from NIST. Startups and their funding from Government sources has been a

great source of inspiration as the world looks for breakthrough ideas from India. We should not try

the same problems of the rich (read yet one more app!) but really go out and understand and solve

the problems of the poor and needy at the bottom of the pyramid. The problems are huge - costs

have to be low - maintenance has to be very easy - in short calls for highly innovative skills. The

large number of projects from NIST for the Smart Hackathon make NIST a favorite hunting ground.

This year we have decided to allow students to suggest ideas for their B.Tech projects of one year

duration which they intend to use as a startup idea.

The Institute has been blessed by a large number of recruiters who have held the faith with NIST. More than 50 companies

came calling and recruited hundreds of students. That the industry requirements have changed is completely true and hence

we ought to quickly change our strategy of investing in high end courses. It is a great feeling to see about 600 students in the

Summer Courses working in diverse high end fields such as Data Analytics, VLSI, Embedded Systems, Networking, Industrial

Automation, CAD-CAM and so on. Students have to savvy about current trends by reading trade journals and keeping track

of requirements by networking with alumni and industry folks. I want to see everyone onto LinkedIn.

We welcome the incoming batch of 2018 to this temple of learning and knowledge. Your faith in us places immense responsibility

onto us and we will rise to the occasion. A warm welcome to outside the state students who chose NIST over many other

opportunities.

On a personal front, Geetika and me have been amply rewarded by the huge love and affection from all sections of NIST on

every occasion. The outgoing batch of B.Tech, MBA, MCA overwhelmed us with the number of selfies during the Farewell

day!

Wishing a wonderful Welcome to the batch of 2018. A special welcome to the B.Sc and M.Sc students who join us this year.

May you prosper - you are the future of this great country India.

Dear Readers! NIST e_news is and has always been the spokesperson of National Institute of Science and Technology

since 2002. This records and at the same time disseminates the happenings at NIST in a much detailed way to all

members of faculty and staff, students, and more importantly their parents. By providing the readers a sneak peek

into the college affairs it helps all know the college, its students, faculty members, and what sort of work they do that keeps

them different from the rest.

This issue of the newsletter is proudly presented to all the readers as it boasts of having some of the best things that can

happen at a college in terms of their range, variety, innovation, and uniqueness. On one hand, we have workshops of national

and international importance bringing people from all around the world under one roof, having

sessions and discussions on the new trends of technology and science. On the other hand, we

have laurels for the college, students, and its faculty members for making substantial contribution

in the field of education through either their research work or their social enterprises. The most

prestigious Odisha Women Achiever Award to NIST Placement Director, The Pride of Ganjam

Award for the Institute, a whooping 269th All India Rank by Kumari Sunita, a NIST student, in

UPSC Exam, 12 entrepreneurial ideas being selected for a seed funding of Rs. 5 Lakhs each

by Govt. of Odisha, and Sushil Mishra securing a 10/10 in 7th semester University Exam are

some of the exemplary achievements to talk about. The most remarkable of all is the entire

campus recruitment process with 50+ companies visiting the campus. The stupendous effort

put up by the entire placement team is praiseworthy. As you go along, we hope this newsletter

will bring smile on your face and content in your heart.

Award on International Womens’ Day from Hon’ble

Minister for Women and Child Development, Government

of Odisha, Shri Prafulla Samal. This is for her stupendous

work in the field of technical education, research work,

social work, and entrepreneurship. Prof. Mudali has

created an indelible mark in the educational map of the

country by imparting quality education to hundreds and

thousands of students from all across the country. She

has been instrumental in placing the students in top

industries of the country and globe since 1996 ever since

the establishment of NIST, Berhampur. Her work has

been well recognized and awarded. She stands as a role

model for many.

THE PRIDE OF GANJAM AWARD

WORKSHOP ON SUSTAINABILITYWorkshop on Sustainability was held at NIST. Prof. Farrokh Mistree, The University of Oklahoma, USA; Prof. John Hall,

University at Buffalo, USA graced the occasion as resource

persons along with Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director, NIST and

Dr Ashok K Das, CEO, SunMoksha. Prof S Peppin, Dean,

School of Sustainability, Xavier University,Bhubaneswar and Mr

C K Ravish, Director, B.C, Debai (a stock advisory services

firm) delivered a talk on ‘Challenges to Corporates in Modern

day Business’ on 2nd February 2018. Both the speakers delivered on visible as well as invisible forces that force corporates to

take some decisions which are prudent and having strong challenges and isks. All the Department of Management faculty

members as well as students were present in this talk. At the end Prof Peppin tested the decision making expertise of students

through some games.

TECHNICAL LECTURE ON ‘SCALING VS. ESD : Thedriving strength of Semiconductor Industry’

IEEE-EDS NIST Student Chapter organized a technical lecture on “Scaling vs ESD: The driving strength of Semiconductor

Industry” on 21st February 2018 at the Institute campus for the graduate

and undergraduate students to enhance the research activity. Mr Basudev

Dash, currently working as a Senior Analog Design Engineer at Intel

Corporation, USA was the resource person for the lecture. During the

interaction he highlighted on the technology scaling and his experience

with 45nm, 22nm, 16nm, 7nm and beyond. Technology scaling solves

many issues at a cost of ESD. ESD protection plays a major role for

improving yield. This recent updates will generate the new ideas to carry

out the research activities within the young minds. Approximately 120

participants attended the talk and responded with very nice interactive

session.

MINI-COLLOQUIUM ON ‘QUANTUM ELECTRONICS’IEEE-EDS NIST Student Chapter organized the 8th Mini-Colloquium on “Quantum Electronics” on 23rd February 2018 at

National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur for the

graduate and undergraduate students. More than 120 participants

registered from different institutes and universities from Odisha

and other states. Four distinguished lectures were organized

throughout the day. Dr Subir Kumar Sarkar, Jadavpur University

talked about MOSFET Scaling: Basic Concepts and approaches.

He gave the new dimension of research methods focusing on

low threshold and parasitics and effect of EM and ESD. Dr G N

Dash pushed the concept of Graphene structure and a true

alternative of MOS Device. Dr Chandan Kumar Sarkar from

Jadavpur University and Dr Yogesh Singh Chauhan from IIT-

Kanpur talked about the compound Semiconductors and their

structures. IEEE ED-NIST Student Chapter conducted this Mini-Colloquium for giving an opportunity to all the students and

researchers to interact with different DLs and help create new milestones in the field of electronics and semiconductor.

4TH NATIONAL CONFERENCE on Devices and Circuits (NCDC-2018)IEEE-EDS NIST Student Chapter organized ‘The 4th National Conference on

Devices and Circuits (NCDC-2018)’ on 24th February 2018. About 80 delegates

registered from different institutes and universities. Approximately 60 papers were

received from NIST Berhampur, KIIT Bhubaneswar, VSSUT Burla, University

of Calcutta and others. The selection committee selected 42 papers to be published

in the proceedings of Conference with ISBN number 978-93-83060-16-0. Prof.

Rakesh Vaid from university of Jammu and Prof. Saumya Pandit from University

of Calcutta delivered the invited talks in two different sessions. The works “Effect

of Cap Layer in an InP/InGaAs Metamorphic ¶-doped Heterojunction Bipolar

Transistor” and “RTL Implementation of Programmable Peripheral Interface using

UMC180nm Technology” were awarded as best presentation in device and circuit session respectively.

PROJECT DAY 2018Project Day 2018 was organized successfully for the B. Tech 2018 graduating batch on 20th March 2018. The best 44

Projects were demonstrated during the exhibition. The projects ranged

from Software to Hardware Modeling, Simulations, VLSI, Embedded

Systems, Renewable Energy, and others. These projects were thoroughly

inspected, examined and evaluated by the committee of 16 external

examiners from different reputed colleges, universities and government

departments of the state. Prof. K. V. Ramana Chary, Director IISER

Berhampur graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He was

overwhelmed with the quality of projects been undertaken by NIST

students and encouraged students to work more on these projects and

INSPIRE SCIENCE CAMPEach year NIST conducts the DST Sponsored Inspire Camp - a five day program - wherein about 250 of the top 1% of the

Class XII/Class XI Science students get to hear top scientists and researchers, many being Bhatnagar Awardees, Infosys

Prize winners, who inspire them to go for a career in Science, Mathematics, Astronomy, Biology, Geophysics, etc.

This was the 13th time that the Institute was entrusted the responsibility of conducting the INSPIRE SCIENCE CAMP from

20th to 24th March 2018 by the Department of

Science & Technology (DST), Govt of India.

(IISER) Berhampur was the Chief Guest and Dr

D. P. Duari, Director, Research & Academic,

M. P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research,

Kolkata was the Guest of Honor in the Inaugural

Ceremony. Both the distinguished dignitaries

congratulated the young talents from different

schools and colleges of the state for being among

the top 1% students of the state based on their

10th results. The participants were encouraged

throughout the camp by many luminaries from different fields of science, research, and innovations on various aspects of

science so as to help them at this early stage of their lives to take up science as their career in the future. Besides the sessions

on science the students were also exposed to participate in various competitive events organized such as Debate, Essay,

Sports, Cultural, and finally a Very Similar PISA Test. All the winners were felicitated with Cash Prize and Certificate on the

final day of the event.

2-DAY TRAINING PROGRAMME on Automotive MechanicsSAE NIST Collegiate Club in collaboration with TECHNEX (IIT BHU) organized a two-day training programme on Automotive

Mechanics, IC Engines and BAJA Designing for

B. Tech (Mechanical & Electrical Engineering)

students at NIST premises. A total of 101 students

participated from the institute. During training,

students experienced the theoretical concepts on

Automobile Engineering, Automobile Ergonomics,

Electronics Vehicle Systems, Basic Combustion

Theory on IC Engines, Performance Parameters

of an IC Engine, Measurement and Center of

Gravity of a Vehicle during Designing of a Vehicle

with practical sessions including overhauling of a

complete 2 wheeler 100cc engine and complete

ergonomics on a 4 wheeler.

START-UP INDIA ODISHA EDITIONStartup India in collaboration with Invest India launched a countrywide Startup Campaign. The Odisha edition was flagged off

by CM Odisha under which 50 campuses including 10 Nodal Institutes were selected to act as the torch bearer of this event.

ideas pitched. A total of 256

participants had taken part in the

startup accelerator program. Prof. Bhagabati P Pattnaik, Coordinator, EDC and Skill Development Cell NIST was felicitated

by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha in a ceremony at Bhubaneswar.

In addition to this two project ideas

from NIST have been picked up by

International Centre for

Entrepreneurship and Technology -

icreate, the esteemed incubation facility

of IIM Ahmedabad. And out of the 256

ideas pitched at NIST, 14 project ideas

have been selected for a seed funding

of Rs. 5 Lakhs each by the Govt. of

Odisha. Out of these 14 project ideas,

12 are from NIST and two from

PMEC, a government engineering

college in Berhampur. NIST is all set

to setup in-house incubation facility to

support young innovators and assist

them with product development.

TWO-DAY WORKSHOP on Cloud ComputingThe School of Computer Science organized the

Two-day Workshop on Cloud Computing for

B. Tech, MCA and M. Tech students at college

premises. A total of 87 students participated

from NIST and from other engineering institutes

of Odisha. During the workshop students

experienced the hands-on on cloud

configuration, private cloud setup, public cloud

and dealing with existing cloud players like IBM

Blumix and Amazon (AWS, EC2). The

workshop ended with discussion on the

applications of cloud and IoT in Industry.

NIST hosts South Odisha’s First Model United NationsNIST embarked on the voyage to contribute in maintaining the world peace which is the need of the hour by organising the

first edition of Model United Nations for the first time in Berhampur in collaboration with VSSUT-Burla on 3rd and 4th March

2018. The goal was to inspire curious learners who care for the world from a global perspective with a local flavour. The

conference springing over two days witnessed intense

debate on international issues by delegates from different

colleges and universities of the Odisha and other states.

NIST MUN 2018 simulated three committees like UNGA

DISEC (United Nations General Assembly Disarmament

and International Security Council), UNODC (United

Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and UNHRC (United

Nations Human Rights Council). About 80 delegates from

Jadavpur University, Ravenshaw University, KIIT

University, XIMB, VSSUT and others joined this mega

event and exhibited their skills and put forward their

opinions. Through this event NIST aimed to educate

participants regarding international relations, diplomacy

and the United Nations’ agenda.

WORKSHOP ON CRYPTOGRAPHY AT NISTSchool of Computer Science and Engineering organized the National Workshop on Cryptography 2018 (NWC-2018) from

26th - 27th February 2018. The workshop was attended by the researchers/B. Tech students and faculty members from all

over India.

WORKSHOPS/SEMINARS/CONFERENCES Attendedq Dr Ratnakar Mishra and Prof. S B Neelamani attended a 3-day Executive Leadership Program organised at C V

Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar with active support of AICTE New Delhi from 17th to 19th May 2018.

The three days leadership program was supervised and mentored by The Art of living Society, Bengaluru. More than 70

participants who are all senior professors attended from Odisha, Jhadkhand, and West Bengal.

q Dr Ratnakar Mishra and Prof Gourav Rath from Department of Management Studies participated in XUB Sustainability

Summit-2018 along with three MBA 2nd years students. The two days summit was organised by Xavier University,

Bhubaneswar which saw a delegation from all over India. The program was organised by Prof. S Peppin of XUB,Odisha.

The two days event from 9th and 10th February 2018 was focussed on various sustainability agenda of UN and its

member countries.

q Dr Ratnakar Mishra and Prof. Gourav Rath participated in a National Seminar on Statistics in Research: Trends &

Applications on 15th April, 2018 at Utkal University, P. G. Department of Statistics. Three students of MBA department

also presented their dissertation papers during this seminar. The seminar was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of Utkal

University, Bhubaneswar. Priyabrata Das, Anwesha Padhi, Itishree Patra and J Aiswarya of MBA department presented

their papers.

q Prof. Pramath Nath Acharya, Faculty Member, Department of Management Studies, presented a paper titled ‘Foreign

Direct Investment and Economic Growth of India’ at the International Conference organised by Utkal University in

association with NITI Ayog, New Delhi during 28-29 January 2018.

q Prof. Pramath Nath Acharya presented a paper titled ‘Demonitisation and Changing Landscapes of Digital Payments in

India’ at the National Seminar of organised by Ravenshaw University Cuttack during 4-5 February 2018.

INTER-SCHOOL LITERARY AND CODINGCOMPETITION 2018

On 21st January 2018, Club Eureka, the literary club of NIST, conducted the 10th edition of FLAIR in collaboration with Club

Excel, the coding club of NIST, which conducted the 3rd edition of CODE CHAMP.

FLAIR is the annual inter-school literary event of NIST. The enthusiasm exhibited by the students was heart-warming. An

overwhelming response from 20 different schools in

and around Berhampur with a total participation of

more than 450 students made the event a grand

success. The events organized by Club Eureka were

Painting, Impromptu, Poetry and Essay in Phase 1

and Debate, Collage, Skit, Nano Tales, and Quiz in

Phase 2. The students were welcome to participate

in these events in the language of their choice, be it

Hindi, Oriya or English. Students from class 8th

onwards participated in this event. The inaugural

ceremony commenced at 9:30 am immediately after

which the Phase 1 competitions were started. The

students along with their respective faculty members

were provided with lunch and refreshments after

which the Phase 2 competitions started.

The Skit performances were the major crowd-puller

of the day-long extravaganza bringing the attention

of all the students together to the sensitive issues of “Pressure against Peer” and “Religious Violence”. The Painting, Collage,

Quiz and Essay events witnessed a great no. of students’ participation.

The events organised by Club Excel were Quest O’ Code and Code N Play in Phase 1 and Phase 2 respectively. With the

collaboration of Renewable Energy Club there were workshops and tour conducted to make the students aware of the

renewable installations in and around the campus. The students were

also introduced to the world of robotics by the NIST Robotics Club.

The closing ceremony was felicitated by Prof. Sukanta Tripathy from

Berhampur University. He guided us with his inspirational words and

gave us the motivation to do better in our lives as students. The Champions

Trophy for the literary event, FLAIR, was won by De Paul School for

the 3rd time in a row and the Champions Trophy for the coding event,

Code Champ, was won by St. Vincent’s Convent School. The event

was dispersed with a sincere hope that such mega events are organised

time and again, giving the students a chance to showcase their talents.

MINI-TREKKING-2018A trekking expedition was organized on 21st January 2018 from

Ramaiyha Patnam to Dhabaleswar Temple for 2017 batch

students. Around 325 students, members of staff and faculty

participated in this trekking program. Prof. Mitu Baral, Batch

Coordinator, B. Tech 2nd Year and Dr Bishnukar Nayak, Batch

Coordinator, B. Tech 1st Year flagged-off the programme at

Ramaiyha Patnam. The group wsas received at Dhabaleswar

by Prof. Anisur Rehman, Prof. Swagat Samantray, and Dr

Rajendra Khadanga, Professors, NIST.

FAREWELL PARTY 2018A formal send off was given to MBA students on 6th April 2018 at Kama’s INN, Berhampur. All the final year MBA students

attended the party along with many members of faculty and staff. Many students shared their experiences at NIST. They felt

really nostalgic about their life at NIST amongst friends and faculty members and expressed their deep sense of belongingness

to the college. In a separate programme B. Tech and MCA final year students were given a farewell party at the college

premises on 18th April 2018. It was difficult on the part of the final year students to accept that their stint at NIST came to an

end. Prof. Geetika Mudali and Prof. Sangram Mudali along with other faculty members wished them all the best for their

future and career and asked everyone to feel free to visit the campus as when they want and to always stay connected to

their alma mater.

IIT Bombay : e-Yantra Lab Setup Initiative (eLSI) at NISTe-Yantra is a project supported by MHRD through the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) to spread

Embedded systems and Robotics education in colleges across India. e-Yantra Lab Setup Initiative (eLSI) supports infrastructure

creation at colleges by providing a platform for training teachers in theory and applications of Robotics, in addition to providing

guidance in setting of Robotics lab at colleges. Through the e-Yantra Lab Setup Initiative (eLSI), the government is creating

robotics labs in 259 colleges from 32 regions across the country.

(Honours) programmes have been added to the School of Sciences with an intake of 32 seats each in Mathematics, Physics,

and Chemistry and 64 in Commerce.

SANKALP 2018The NIST ISTE Students Chapter organized the annual national level Techno Management Symposium ‘SANKALP 2018’ at

the college premises on 8th and 9th March 2018. The symposium witnessed a conglomeration of young & dynamic technocrats

from different technical institutes of the country. The gritty determination, zealous

perseverance, intellectual indulgence, myriad unbounded enthusiasm of

technocrats was tested and challenged. Prof. Rishikesha Krishnan, Director &

Professor of Strategy at Indian Institute of Management, Indore graced the

occasion as the Chief Guest. A mammoth participation of over 3000 students

from over 10 engineering colleges from all over India participated in the event.

All the participants and organizers were an integral part of SANKALP, and

their symbolic relationship helped the event become bigger as well as generated

a lot of goodwill among the

students and outsiders alike.

The theme for this edition of Sankalp was Shoonya: Sapling to Infinity. The

campus was decorated with the designs and display boards that stood in

tandem with the theme. The first day of the event started with Sustainability

Pledge followed by a Flash Mob. Paper Presentations, Model Presentations,

Theme Galleries, Sports, Robotics, Online Gaming, Quizzes, Coding, and

other Club Activities kept the day busy. The evening unfurled with an

intense Panel Discussion on the topic: “Only Agricultural Development

can Pull India out of Mass Poverty” followed by cultural activities on the

stage. Like every year, this

year the Institute felicitated Mr Sriram Panda, Founder, MITS Mega Food Park

with NIST Award of Professional Excellence for his tremendous efforts in

bringing up and creating the ecosystem for food processing in the suburbs of

Rayagada and helping hundreds and thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs realize

their dreams. Events like Mr and Ms Sankalp, Inter College Dance Competition,

and Band Performance by NIST Musical Society took the programme to its

next level.

The second day saw more seriousness among all participants as it had the final

rounds of all competitions. The hectic day had in store the state of apprehension

among the student participants with their fingers crossed for the results where they were a part. The institute had the pleasure

of conducting its first ever Writing Workshop by Terribly Tiny Tales (TTT). The subtlety and craftsmanship in writing was

captured in the stories of 140 characters. The evening came as a respite with the much awaited Band Performance by the

national fame The Nalaayak Band from Chandigarh. The entire campus reverberated with the high pitch decibel of the band

and the equal thumping of all NISTians on the dance floor. The two day extravaganza closed with the National Anthem.

was held on 10th March 2018 with a nonstop, hectic but exciting

continuation from Sankalp-2018. The day long programme kept

all NIST enthusiasts on their toes as it had something for everyone

in store. Starting with sports like Cricket, Volley Ball, Basket

Ball, Marathon, Swimming, Lawn Tennis, Football, Kabbadi, and

Billiards to Song, Skit, Dance, Tattoo Making, Painting,

Photography, Stand-up Comedy, and Fashion Show, the

programme sprang over such varieties that could leave the

audience and participants awestruck. All the clubs of the college

had lined up something new and innovative for all student

participants. The Horror Hall, Antique Gallery, Art Gallery, Fun

Fiesta, and Faculty Songs and Fashion Show added zing to the

exuberance of all NISTians. The evening marked a wave of

celebration as it started felicitating all toppers of individual branches and courses of the 2017 graduated batch. The alumni of

2017 graduated batch, while receiving the medals from the Director and Placement Director of the Institute, shared their

experiences of campus life and how the institution helped them achieve what they dreamt of their life. The felicitation

extended a little more with the NIST Scholarship Awards for students for their excellence in academics, sports, and leadership

qualities. The cultural extravaganza kept the audience thrilled till late in the evening before curtains were down for the Annual

Cultural Fest of NIST for the year 2018.

ANNUAL SPORTS MEET-2018

Batting first, NIST made 170/8 in 15 overs and

SMIT could manage only 134/7 in their allotted

quota of 15 overs. Mr Brindaban B. Singh of

NIST was awarded with Man of the Match prize

and Mr Saroj Padhy, the captain of NIST cricket

team, awarded with the Player of the series prize.
