Transcript of The New Norm
This brief slide show and supporting video was created as a course requirement for “Connectivism, Networked Learning and Connective Knowledge” facilitated by George Siemens and Stephen Downes as part of a certification program in Emerging Technologies for Learning, University of Manitoba. April, 2011
We will cover tools to
•Connect•Aggregate information
And we will examine one curator, a site to trust for accurate and up-to-date information.
Just as we trust a museum curator to present the best materials in an interesting and learner-friendly manner, a site can keep up to date.
Tools that act as a curator, a person or site you trust to provide accurate, up to date information and leads
My Curator
Ning is an online platform for people to create their own social networks, launched in October 2005.
Ning appeals to people who want to create their own social networks around specific interests with their own visual design, choice of features and member data.
The central feature of Ning is that anyone can create their own social network for a particular topic or need, catering to specific membership bases.
I was first introduced to Ning by Elliott Masie and the site he created, Learning Town.
As you will see on the next slide, Ning allows blogs, networked discussions, video, photos, blogs.
With this model I created my own Ning site, Moving Social Media into the Classroom, but I expanded the widgets and include Twitter Tracker and a polling feature, Polldaddy.
Explore Ning for yourself! And, for more info on Ning in the workplace, check out my slideshare site and Ning! Harnessing the Power of connected Learners to Grow the Employee Value Proposition.
I would like to revive Moving Social Media into the Classroom. If you are interested in participating in a distributed network to share and learn, please log in and join up!
BlogTalkRadio is a web-based platform that allows callers to host a live call-in internet broadcast using a computer and a phone. BlogTalkRadio is entirely web-based and requires no client download.
I want to set up a station on Technology for Education and facilitate a LIVE CALL IN PROGRAM. Very cool. If you are interested in working with me on this project, please contact me at [email protected]
This site allows you to broadcast from your PC or smart phone.
Teachers log on for class projects and about 23 volunteers staff the site's chat room from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST daily.
Checkout what the Associated Press said about the Decorah Eagles site.
Here is how they handle the chat room- rules to follow.

When I signed up and took advantage of the offer to see if FB or Twitter “friends” had an Upstream channel, I was asked to give permission to access my basic public info.
How to keep up with the ing on emerging?

My favorite curator
A sit that provides up to date and reliable information, screening out the unneeded or non-useful
I trust this slide pack has sparked interest in a topic I am passionate about- connecting for business and education to share insights and lessons learned.
