• Multics is a disaster
• OS/360 is a huge success (largely due to Fred Brooks)
Doesn’t matter. Bell Labs then picked up what Multics left
behind

“Open” is a common theme in these historical stories
4 Stages to Openness
Occasional (1970 - 1990)• Ken Thompson & Dennis Ritchie creates UNIX• No one knows what open source is except Richard
Stallman• What the hell is “internet”?
1
Contagious (1990 - 2000)• Now we have internet and we use it• Linus Torvalds creates Linux kernel • Businesses start to understand “open source”• Freeware, shareware• Blogs rise in popularity
2
Strategic (2000 - 2010)• Comingled code in IT infrastructure & service• Social media (blogs & social network)• Businesses solve problems by crowdsourcing• Google Android, facebook, Apple iPhone, Twitter
3
Universal (2010 ~)• Customers become aware of “openness”• Open is a necessity, not an option for corporations• People quantify themselves and share publicly• Government open up their data (though reluctantly)• People raise funds through crowdfunding

A Classic Example
Open Leadership

Implications to Organization
• Open is a necessity, both internal and external, not an option
Imagine an even more Open World
Borgle

Monopolies
What makes them so successful?
Because they are doing the same thing, and they do it perfectly
• Google creates links between human and information
• Apple creates links between human and device
• Facebook creates links between human and human
So “Open” is all about "Establishing Links”
Then what’s next?

Internet of things:links between all objects!

This is Borg …
A dumb race, a dumb world

Our internet today …
Putting them together …
Can you feel/see the differences?
Our world is a lot more versatile, organic, and meaningful
With more links established, not only there will be more innovations, but
every one of us is entitled to explore his/her own purpose in a unique way.
Don’t worry about the Borg.
Connect your voice to the world.
