Locating Source of Toilet Leak

Q: The other day I noticed a small puddle of water at the base of the toilet. I wiped it up, only to notice the next day that the puddle was back. It’s clean water so I think it’s a leak from the tank, but I can’t find any visible drips. The tank itself tends to sweat a bit, so I can’t pinpoint where the water is coming from. Should I call in a plumber? -- Christine H., Toledo, Ohio

A: Try a few more things to try and pinpoint the source of the problem.Visuallycheckthetankandthebowlforcracks--mosttoiletsareprettysturdy,soit’sunusualforthemtocrackfornoreason,butdocheck.Thetankismorelikelytocrack,andifso, it needs to be completely replaced. At least it’s easier than replacing the bowl.Ifyoudon’tfindacrack,checktheshutoffvalve(usuallywhatlookslikeafaucethandlejuttingfromthewallbelowandbehindthetoilet)anditsattachedinlettubeforleaks.Flushthetoiletsothatthetankbeginsfilling,andobservetheinletcomponents.Youmayalsoneedtorunyourhandalongthevalve,inlettubeandtheinletconnectionatthebottomofthetank,checkingifanywaterisleakingandrunningdowntheinlettubeorthebackof the toilet, out of sight.Next, test for a silent leak to confirm whether the leak ishappeninginthetankornot.Takethetanktopoff.Flushthetoiletandletthetankrefillcompletely.Then,takeacrayonorwax pencil andmark the high-water pointwith a small line.

Walkawayfor10minutes,comebackandseeifthewaterisstillatthatpointorhasgonedown.Ifithasfallenbelowtheline,markthenewwaterpointandleaveitforanother10minutes.Checkagaintoseeifthewaterlevelcontinuestofall.Ifthetankisleaking,checksomepossiblesourcesoftheleak.First,makesuretheflappervalveat thebottomofthetankiscompletely closed.
