our garden may be small, or evenconfined to a balcony and a couple ofwindow boxes. But with the right
selection of plants you can make youroutdoor space a pollinatorsʼ paradise.
There is a serious decline in insects such asbees and butterflies in the UK due to loss ofhabitat, disease and pesticide use. Whydoes it matter? Because many plants rely oninsects for pollination. Honeybees alonepollinate around one third of the food cropswe consume.
Fortunately, doing something to halt thedecline has become a hot topic. At theOlympic Park over 10 hectares of meadowswill flower during the Games. These havebeen designed to provide an insect haven:nectar and pollen rich, diverse and longflowering to encourage a range of bees, butterflies, birds, moths and other insects.
We obviously donʼt all have 10 hectares toplay with but the estimated 16 milliongardens in the UK make up a vast networkof potentially rich insect habitat. You mayassume that any garden will do its bit.Unfortunately not: not all plants are equalwhen it comes to attracting wildlife. But witha few cunning plant choices you can rapidlyincrease the buzz in your garden. What is init for you? A couple of butterfly sightings ona summer evening will surely be all theincentive youʼll need.
Tips for increasing insect visitors:
• Introduce irresistible plants: Create beeand butterfly friendly borders or containers.Include plants in sun which will attractpollinators with their flowers from Februaryto November. Here are some suggestions:
o Spring: Use classics such as Aubretia,
Alyssum and honesty (Lunaria) to draw ininsects early inthe year. For latespring to earlysummer, theglobularflowerheads ofAlliums areloved bypollinators andcome large (e.g. Allium christophii) and small(e.g. Allium schoenoprasum - chives, above).
o Summer: As wellas Salvias (such asSalvia ‘MysticSpiresʼ) and hyssop(Agastache), tryVerbena bonariensis(Right). A starperformer, its purpleflowers on tall stemswill be a constantattraction to insects
o Latesummer/autumn:Species of lavender(Lavandula),michaelmas daisies(Aster) yarrow(Achillea) andEchinacea (e.g. E.purpurea, right) willkeep the insectscoming

was talking tosomeone at Archieʼs
school the other daytrying to make anappointment for hisLearning Support PlanReview. She offered me adate and asked if it wouldbe suitable for me and myhusband. And it was atthat point that I ground toa shuddering halt.
Diary appointments are alogistical nightmare in ourhousehold. I have a diaryschedule and so does myhusband and then there isone for the boys. My diaryand my husbandʼs diaryare held on our respectivelaptops and phones andrequire regular, butunfortunately, individualsyncing. Diary dates forthe boys are supposed tobe put up on the wallcalendar so that both meand hubby can see whatneeds to be done butgenerally they get throwninto the phone/laptop ofwhoever makes theappointment.
Phones and/or laptops
follow most peoplearound so you wouldassume that the processof communication wouldbe simple. We haveemail, SMS and aplethora of Apps availablethat allow us to sync butthe reality is that unlessyou are all operating onthe same systems thecommunication will fail. But hubby and I donʼthave the same systemsso we canʼt sync to eachothersʼ diary. Thatsometimes means that Iam supposed to be takingone of the boys to thedentist without actuallyhaving knowledge of it!
The fast paced world oftechnology provides uswith all kinds of gimmicksit doesnʼt beat good oldfashioned talking.Following my diarydebacle, and as it is moreby luck than judgementthat the three diariesactually come together, Inow sit my husband downonce a week for a diarycheck. Not only does itkeep the wheels oiled and
the minutia family lifeticking over, moreimportantly, it gives meand my husband 20minutes to have a cup oftea together and a chat. Now thatʼs not somethingyou can get an App for!
Do let me know yourdiary nightmares and/orsolutions if you have any.

o Herbs such as thyme, rosemary andoregano are favourites of insects
o Encourage moths by planting night-flowering, nectar-rich plants which haveevolved specifically to attract nocturnalinsects e.g. tobacco plant (Nicotiana),summer-flowering jasmines and honeysuckle
• Seek some advice: Donʼt know where tostart? The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)has just launched its Plants for Pollinatorsscheme. You can find an excellent list ofPlants for Pollinators at www.rhs.org.uk. Alogo is being introduced to help you selectinsect-friendly plants at the garden centre.
• Create a mini-meadow: evoke a bit of theOlympic planting spirit in your garden. Youcan grow wildflowers from seed even inhanging baskets or containers. If you have alawn, experiment with turning a small patchover to a wildflower meadow. Usefulinformation is available atwww.wildaboutgardens.org.
• What to avoid! Avoid using pesticides andavoid using plants with double flowers whichoften lack pollen and nectar.
So, with a bit of time and imagination youcan make sure you have a more colourful, scented and insect-friendly outdoor spacebefore the Olympic meadows are in bloom!

he legendary director talks abouthis love for cinema, and his Oscar-nominated epic “Hugo”.
In over forty years in the film industry, MartinScorsese has come to define American cinema ina way few others have managed. Last year hewon the hearts of audiences and the Academywith “Hugo”, a family film about an orphan boywho lives in the walls of a Paris train station.
The film has been described as a love letter tocinema, a medium Scorsese has immersedhimself in since childhood. “I think for me movies, for a long period of time, were a refuge, in away… because of having asthma I was notallowed to do anything sporty or with animals” herecalls. “So, I was pretty much taken to the movietheatre very often and I sawmany films in the ʻ40s andbecame enamoured of theWestern genre becausewhat I couldnʼt go near, orbe near, there it was on thescreen.”
The film alsocelebrates silentcinema, something thathas also beencovered inanother Oscarfavourite in “TheArtist”, and to the69-year-old itʼs amark of how much ithas meant to cinemalovers. “Itʼs anotherlanguage completely. At times the acting isextremely modern, too. But one has to getinto that mind set to see it. I wonder if thepossibility of several films being released at thesame time is maybe an appreciation and gettingback to the roots of how this all began.”
Finally, itʼs his first film in 3D, a cinemagimmick that still dividesaudiences. Will he be using it in thefuture? “Iʼve been fascinated by 3Dall my life. If itʼs used appropriatelyfor the story, then why not?” hereplies. “As Iʼve always pointed out,for a long period of time colour wassomething really special. At first, everybody complained about it until1935 when they got it right, with
Technicolor. It became part of the story and partof life. But yes I would like to deal with 3D as anelement in the future. The equipment is gettingmuch more flexible, and theyʼre working on
ideas to get rid of the glasses, so whynot?
“Hugo” is out on DVD and Blu Ray

Wheelie BinsNow that the roll-out of the use of “wheeliebins” is almost complete in the WinchmoreHill Residents Association area we felt it wastime to take stock and ascertain residentsʼopinions. The Association is well aware thatthe reasoning behind the use of wheelie binsis one of reducing costs and of recyclingmaterials.
What the Association finds disturbing is theapparent intransigence and lack of flexibilityof the Council in their methods of collection. You either have a large or not so largewheelie bin. The large bin will take at leasttwo weeks refuse and we understandresidents are concerned this will lead tocollections at two week intervals.
Many householders cannot wheel a binthrough from the rear garden so bins are leftin the front garden or on the pavement. Thiscould in some instances be laziness. Inconsequence wheelie bins have nowbecome a dominant part of the street scene. This is, in our view, quite unacceptable.
It is even more unacceptable where, withsmall terraced cottages, bins have to be leftin the front garden as they cannot be takenthrough the house. In some instances ofcourse there is little or no front garden andhere these bins dominate the front of thehouse.
The paradox is that this type of smallterraced cottage is often found inConservation Areas where residents andoccupiers are under strict obligations tomaintain the appearance of the house. The
Council is therefore aparty to destroyingwhat theConservation Area istrying to achieve.
Now the Council have provided analternative for these cottages in the form ofbird proof sacks which can easily be broughtout from the house to meet the collectiontimes. However, we have found the use ofthese sacks, with approval determined bythe Council very limited. For instance onlyone cottage, adjacent to several others in theVicars Moor Lane Conservation Area, beingallowed to use them. There is no logic inthis.
We would like to hear from members howthey view these bins and their experiences.
MemoriesWe have been approached with an idea torun with the Festival in June.
A number of our members who have lived inthe area for many years may have memoriesof life in Winchmore Hill 50 or so years ago.Our request is for you to contact us if youwish to take part and we will forward to youa form for you to complete. nfield Council keep barking on how they arehelping the local economy -----really?---- really?– Their greed & short term fix to a bigger
financial problem and taxing the shopper in a car willbe driving people out of town centres & high streets inand around the borough and send them possibly toneighbouring boroughs.
A great example – if you lived in between BrookfieldFarm and Enfield, instead of shooting into Enfieldwhere you have to pay, you would probably go out ofthe borough, go to the shop you wanted, and morethan likely go into other shops and spend your hardearned money not feeding the meter, but grabbing aleisurely coffee as the pressure is now taken off youas a shopper. I have spoken to many friends inbusiness in the borough and they are disgusted atEnfield Councilʼs attitude at pretending to listen. Onecouncillor in particular – Councillor Bond – who in myopinion could save shops closing down. I know thiswill make me unpopular with Enfield Council, andvarious departments will try to bully me to keep me
quiet. I urge you to email Councillor Bond and let himknow your views. Itʼs too late trying to stop this after ithas happened – please act now. Email CouncillorBond with the subject ʻStop Sunday parking feesʼ [email protected] . After all, surely the councillorsshould be working for us and the borough not againstthe people of Enfield. Also have the council allowedfor Enfieldʼs church going population, and instead oftwenty minutes free, maybe it should be an hour anda half. We here at Vic Smith Beds will refund ourcustomers parking off their bill if Enfield Councilinsists on raising their parking fees. EnfieldCouncillors have the power to use common sense. You as residents need to make them see sense –please email now, and pass it on to your friends andfamily to do the same. Of course, this is only ouropinion – how do you feel?

ome people in our trade arescaremongering the public which are ourpotential customers, that if your bed is 8
years or older then it will have bed bugs. Thissimply is not true - the honest answer is it makesno difference how old your bed is - if youʼve gotbugs then youʼve got bugs. Bed bugs donʼt knowhow old your bed is and when itʼs time to move in.If youʼre not sure, there are a few tests that youcan do . Firstly has anyone using the bed inquestion been bitten? And if the answer is yes thebite may have come from elsewhere, possiblyfrom the garden or pets. If someone has beenbitten in the bed normally they notice this in themorning. Straight away use sticky tape and goaround the edge of the top of your mattress andthis should pick up some of the little horrors. Oncethey have fed they tend to be easier to see asthey have increased in body size from feeding byas much as 7 times . Unfed they are a flattenedinsect ,they only feed on mammalian and avianblood. There are sprays that you can buy but themajority are very harsh chemicals that you shouldnot breathe in so it follows that you should notspray your bed and then sleep on it. You can buynatural pump sprays that have no harmfulmanmade chemicals just oil based which kills andrepels them and many other bugs. It also stopsthe bed bugs from reproducing. The doubleaction will get rid of your problem. Otherwise afemale bedbug can produce over 1,000 eggs in alife time.
Myth 1: Bedbugs can fly
Bedbugs lack wings, and therefore cannot fly. They can crawl about a metre a minute.
Myth 2: Bedbugs reproduce quickly
Each adult female produces about one egg perday; a common bedbug egg takes 10 days tohatch and another four to five weeks for theoffspring to develop into an adult
Myth 3: Bedbugs bite only at night
Although bedbugs are generally nocturnal, they'relike humans—if they're hungry, they'll get up and
get something to eat. Normally most people sleepin their bed at night so this is normally when theyare bitten but even when it's daytime the bedbugswill come looking for you if they are hungry, sosleeping with a light on will make no difference, unfortunately this does not work on these littlevampires.
Myth 4: Bedbugs live exclusively in mattresses or
beds
This also is not true, they also live in suitcasesand trains and cinemas ( this is where the oldnickname the flea pit comes from.) Bedbugsspread away from beds into living areas and canbe seen on any surface, chairs, curtains andceilings or skirting boards.
Myth 5: Bedbugs transmit disease
The bite from a bedbug can lead to anxiety, sleeplessness and even secondary infections,They can, however, harbour human pathogens: upto 27 viruses. Canadian researchers announced inEmerging Infectious Diseases that bedbugsisolated from three individuals in a Vancouverhospital carried methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus, aka MRSA. But there stillhave been no cases reported that the bugsactually transmit human disease.
Myth 6: You can't see a bed bug
This is clearly not true, adult bed bugs are easilyspotted as they are 3mm - 5mm in size and areddish brown colour. The babies are much harderto see as they are 1mm - 2mm in size.
Myth 7 : If only one of you is bitten then surely it
can t̓ be bedbugs?
If only one of you is being bitten, the one that isnot being bitten seems to always insist it canʼt bebed bugs as they are not being bitten. This is sofar from the truth – it is the same principle as ifthere is a group of you having a BBQ in the

garden on a hot summers day, not all of you willget bitten. It just means you are more tasty. Thenon bitten partner should be grateful but alsoconcerned because as they breed you may wellfind the junior bed bugs prefer a different flavour!
Myth 8: You can t̓ bring bed bugs back from
holiday because they will not survive the cold
temperatures of the planes hold.
Bed bugs are very resilient & they will survive atlow temperatures, even below freezing forsignificant lengths of time including a planes hold.So check your bags properly before to make sureyouʼre not helping them into your home. Bed Bugsare a global problem. America and Australia haveseen a bed bug epidemic and nearly every countryin Europe has seen a dramatic rise in infestation. The UK, Italy, and Germany have all beenparticularly badly affected. It is so bad that inAmerica, New York has been renamed ʻ The BugAppleʼ!
Myth 9 : My neighbour has bedbugs - will I get
them as well?
This is a lot more common from a neighbour toneighbour than people want to believe and thelikelihood of you getting infested depends on howthey handle the problem. Buildings with a sturdyparty wall tend to have a better chance of notspreading to you. If you think your neighbour hasan issue with bed bugs you should check your bedand living area on a weekly basis to make surethat you detect any bed bug signs at the earliestpossible stages.
The insects, making a comeback around theglobe, cannot fly and are really not interested inhanging out on your body--but they dooccasionally bite during the day. You can buynatural sprays as opposed to harsh chemicals for£49 .99 . Bed bug sprays will not kill the bed bugsthat have burrowed into your mattress to feed afterthe spray has worn off. A mattress being inchesdeep is the perfect air raid shelter for the bugs.Your bed will need replacing , but make sure youspray before the new one arrives. With naturalsprays, you can go back into the room after twohours.

10% off panel installation + We’ll pay the VAT so you can get tax free returns of up to 11%
Offer ends 31st March 2012
SPECIAL OFFER
From the 1st April, the DECC has announced that homes which install solar PV must have an energy performance certificate (EPC) at level D or higher in order to receive maximum feed in tariff rates. Although 50% of UK homes already reach level D, homes which do not reach this level will receive a much lower rate of 9p per kWh after 1st April.
To avoid the hassle and extra costs of obtaining a certificate or to take your opportunity to gain the maximum tariff if your home does not reach level D, install your solar PV panels with Salisbury Electrical Engineers before the 1st of April. The team still have some install days available during March for you to make the most of your time and money. But hurry, we are booking up fast!
WHY INVEST BEFORE
1ST APRIL
If you install between 3 March and 1 July, you will receive a guaranteed tariff of 21p per kWh for the next 25 years.
However, if you install by the 1st April, you will have the added bonus of avoiding the EPC regulation, and any extra costs that it may create. You’ll also take advantage of our Special March Offer above.
BOOK NOW
If you have any queries about investing or installing solar PV, please do not hesitate to get into contact.

pring is in the air, at least it feels like it from where Iʼmsitting and it got me thinking about how to make senseof everything thatʼs going on in the UK and world
economies. Having thought about Iʼve come to thefollowing conclusion; much of the worldʼs economic andfinancial market phenomena are unforecastable! There,Iʼve admitted it, Iʼm not very good!
Here are two examples of what I mean:
“No congress of the United States ever assembled, onsurveying the state of the Union, has met with a morepleasing prospect than that which appears at the presenttime. In the domestic field there is tranquillity andcontentment and the highest record years of prosperity.”President Calvin Coolidge, December 4th 1928; his lastState of the Union address. What followed was the GreatDepression!
And more recently:
“I expect there will be some failures. I don’t anticipate anyserious problems of that sort among the largeinternationally active banks that make up a very substantialpart of our banking system” Ben Bernanke, FederalReserve Bank Chairman, 28th February 2008.……lessthan 1 month later Bear Sterns had collapsed, LehmanBros later in 2008 and the rest is history!
And many agreed with Mr Bernanke………
In May 2008 OECD forecast GDP growth in 2009 for allOECD countries at just below + 2%. Actual growth was -3%!
Some extremely clever people got it wrong so Iʼm notalone! Predicting the future can be a mugʼs game as thecomments above show.
And so in this uncertain world how do we both meet ourclientsʼ financial objectives and preserve their wealth?
At Lyndhurst we start by having a really robust process forselecting the active fund managers we believe will performand produce consistent returns.
However, even the good managers have bad years asBlackRock admitted when they said “it would be wrong for
us to blame market conditions or to overemphasise theimportance of our positive market view. Instead themajority of the fundʼs poor performance (UK AbsoluteAlpha Fund) can be explained by picking the wrongshares”. (Jan 2012 commenting on 2011ʼs performance).
So we needed something else to help protect our clientsʼwealth. Following extensive research by our team wedeveloped Prime, a trend following service for our wealthmanagement clients, launching at the beginning of 2010.
This service has proved so successful we have built furthercapability to allow us to offer it to a wider range of clients.
So why do markets trend? Well, when a new piece ofinformation arrives which moves markets (e.g. theJapanese earthquake) professional investors do not adjustinstantly to the news….they typically take time to reassessfundamental value. Research from the CASS BusinessSchool in London has also shown that retail investorsrespond to positive market trends with anything up to a sixmonth lag….they buy into rallies late and sell after themarkets fall, exacerbating established trends.
The graph below shows an example of how Prime worksby monitoring those trends to provide buy and sellindicators. When the black line (the fund price) fallsthrough the gold line we recommend the fund is sold andthe proceeds held in cash, similarly when the black linerises through the gold line we recommend buying the fund.
To learn more about how Prime could help you in theuncertain world call 01582 715777Geoff Newman, Director,
Lyndhurst Financial Management Ltd.

Ask almost any doctor about cellulite and he willsay there is no such thing, but ask 90 per centof women and they will show you living proof ofits existence – mainly on their upper legs, buttocks and tummy. Cellulite is a word that thebeauty industry uses to explain the dimpled, lumpy areas of fat that appear just below theskin. Until recently, the experts thought it wasexclusive to women and that female hormonescaused the unusual fat deposits. However, theresearch from cosmetic companies proves thatmen have cellulite too, only it is not so near thesurface and so does not show as lumps underthe skin.
This has led to a new theory on exactly whatcauses cellulite. It appears likely that toxicwastes that are not flushed from the body dueto poor circulation and a lack of exercise, causea chemical reaction which puts a hard coatingaround the normally soft fat cells. This is whythey become lumpy and skin dimples. It is alsowhy cellulite appears in areas where circulationis slow.
While the cosmetic industry looks for newingredients to stop this chemical reaction, anything that speeds up the circulation or helpsbreak up the hard rim of these fat cells willimprove areas of cellulite. Massage can do both– the friction brings fresh blood to the skinsurface, while the warmth and rubbing actionhelps break down the rims around the fat cells.Massage together with specifically blendedessential oils helps to clear the body of toxins, increases circulation and stimulates the flow oflymph fluid.

THE CASE FOR NHS REFORMDavid
Burroweshe NHS is one of the things that makethis country great: healthcare for all, freeat the point of use, unrelated to the
ability to pay. And thatʼs the way it should andwill stay. Like so many in this country, I havefamily and friends who would not be with ustoday if it had not been for the quality of themedical and nursing care they received andthe dedication of the doctors and staff. So mycommitment to the NHS is personal anddeep-seated.
But letʼs not look at the NHS through rose-tinted glasses. Although the NHS has beenbrilliant at so many things, we could still dobetter. If the NHS was performing at worldclass levels we could save an extra 5,000lives from cancer every year. If the local NHSwas better we would not be in the situationwhere if you walk from my constituency toEdmonton the life expectancy reduces by 10years.
The NHS needs reform because people areliving longer and have the right to morecomplex new treatment and more choicesabout where to receive it. However, the costof medicines has been rising by £600 millionper year. Continuing as we are will put at riskthe chances of our children inheriting an NHSwhich has in so many ways stood us in goodstead. Despite the abysmal economicsituation we inherited, we are investing £12.5billion in the NHS over the next four years –thatʼs the equivalent of one in every sevenpounds of public money. But, simply putting inmore money without reform wonʼt meet thehealthcare needs of this and subsequentgenerations.
So what are we doing? It boils down to four
things. First, we are makingsure that patients get the best possibletreatment. We are doing this by puttingdoctors and nurses, the people who bestunderstand their patients, in charge of theNHS and by allowing patients to makeinformed choices about when and how theyare treated.
Secondly, we are getting more money to thefront line. One way we are doing that is bycutting bureaucracy. The reforms take outover 160 PCTs and Strategic HealthAuthorities and half of the statutory healthquangos.
Thirdly, we are making sure that thereʼs abetter fit between health and social carebringing together health, hospitals, housingand social services care.
Fourthly, the Health Bill for the first time everoutlaws favouring the private sector overexisting state health providers. It provides alevel playing field where if for example youhave a stiff shoulder you could go to an NHShospital for physiotherapy or to your morelocal group of self employed physiotherapists.Your GPs can give you a choice between thetwo - or even more choice of where to go tofix your shoulder.
So the point of these reforms is to make theNHS better, more sustainable and for patientsto have the best possible treatment and carefor the long-term benefit of their health.

Asthma is a condition that affects the airways – the smalltubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When a personwith asthma comes into contact with something thatirritates their airways (an asthma trigger), the musclesaround the walls of the airways tighten so that the airwaysbecome narrower and the lining of the airways becomesinflamed and starts to swell. Sometimes, sticky mucus orphlegm builds up, which can further narrow the airways.
These reactions cause the airways to become narrowerand irritated - making it difficult to breath and leading tosymptoms of asthma.
Asthma symptoms
The usual symptoms of asthma arecoughingwheezingshortness of breathtightness in the chest. Not everyone will get all of these symptoms. Some peopleexperience them from time to time; a few people mayexperience these symptoms all the time.
How can I treat my asthma?
Although there's no cure for asthma, there are effectivemedicines for asthma that allow most people to controltheir asthma so that is doesn't interfere with daily life. Asasthma is a lifelong condition and attacks can happenunexpectedly, it's important that you take your asthmamedicine as directed. Your doctor or asthma nurse shouldhave explained how to use your inhalers properly, so thatevery dose you take gives you the most benefit. Everyonewith asthma should have a reliever inhaler. Relieverinhalers are usually blue.
Relievers are medicines that are taken immediately torelieve asthma symptoms. They quickly relax the musclessurrounding the narrowed airways. This allows the airwaysto open wider, making it easier to breathe again. Relieversare essential in treating asthma attacks. You should take adose of reliever inhaler when you are having asthmasymptoms. If you are using your reliever inhaler three ormore times a week, your asthma may not be well controlledand you should go back to your doctor or asthma nurseand have your symptoms reviewed.
Preventer inhalers
Preventers control the swelling and inflammation in theairways, stopping them from being so sensitive andreducing the risk of severe attacks. Not everyone withasthma will be prescribed preventer medicine. Theprotective effect builds up over a period of time so theyneed to be taken every day (usually morning and evening)
even when you are feeling well. Preventers do not giveimmediate or quick relief when you are breathless butinstead they reduce long-term inflammation. Preventerinhalers usually contain a low dose of steroid medicine.
There are several kinds of preventers, but they all work inthe same way. You will be started on an appropriate levelof treatment to get your symptoms under control; once thishas been achieved the treatment will be reduced to thelowest possible dose. Preventers are usually brown, red ororange inhalers.
When are preventers prescribed?
You should be prescribed a preventer if you: are breathless, cough or have a tight chest duringeveryday activities three or more times a week need to useyour reliever inhaler three times a week or more have sleepdisturbed by cough or chest tightness each week have badattacks of breathlessness when you have a chest infectionor are in a smoky atmosphere.
When should I see my doctor or asthma nurse again?
Your doctor or asthma nurse will probably want to see youwithin a month after you start using a preventer. They willbe able to adjust your medicines if your symptoms are notdecreasing. Or, if your preventer works well for you, youmay be able to cut down on the number of puffs you takeeach day, or the strength of the medicine.

t has been said that once you have booked yourwedding venue and chosen your wedding dress, choosing the wedding cake is the best part of
planning your wedding.
Wedding cake designer Tina Koorland specialises increating beautiful bespoke wedding cakes. She isregularly featured in bridal magazines and has madecakes for celebrities including Hollywood actor DavidSchwimmer. She says she once had the pleasure ofgoing to meet Thandie Newton at The Engineer pub inPrimrose Hill to give her a cake decorating lesson inpreparation for her role in the 2007 film “Run Fat BoyRun”, which exclusively featured Tinaʼs cakes………….
“I work from my own private cake studio in Muswell Hilland offer a personal and professional wedding cakeservice including a complimentary consultation anddelicious cake tasting.
Stunning sugar flowers are my speciality, each onehand crafted from sugar, petal by petal, leaf by leaf, they are so realistic you want to smell them!
Clients can order a bespoke design or they can choosesomething from my current collection and have itcustomized so that it is personal to them.
When it comes to designing a wedding cake, I get myinspiration from all sorts of things including bridalmagazines, bridal gowns, textiles, and in particularfresh flowers; Iʼm always looking at flowers andwondering if I can re-create them in sugar! Clientsoften bring with them magazine clippings, a sample oftheir dress fabric, a colour swatch and pictures of theirreception flowers. I then work together with them tobuild up a picture of how they would like their weddingcake styled.
This years current cake trends include lace, made evenmore popular following the royal wedding and Kateʼsgorgeous lace dress. Sugar flowers have remainedvery popular and vintage themed weddings are still onthe rise with some couples choosing to dress their cakewith a beautiful satin bow fastened with a familyheirloom brooch, a wonderful idea for that ʻsomethingborrowedʼ. Cup cakes are as popular as ever, great fora smaller wedding; they always look fantastic on apretty cake stand.
Itʻs so important that your wedding cake should notonly look beautiful and make an amazing centre pieceat your reception, but it should also taste fantastic too”.
In addition to a traditional brandyfruitcake, Tina also offers a tipsyCaribbean blended fruit cake whichis steeped in vast quantities of rum!
Most couples these days like to mix up their cake tierswith a combination of flavours.
Tinaʼs three most popular cake flavours are; ZestyLemon Cake infused with Limoncello; “Itʼs light andzingy and really refreshing after the wedding meal”.
Old fashioned Victoria sponge cake made with realvanilla bean pods, butter cream and home-maderaspberry preserves.
Rich chocolate cake infused with Framboise andlayered with chocolate ganache, which she calls herʻgrown upʼ chocolate cake and is always a winner.
Other flavours include; spiced carrot, coffee andwalnut, orange and marmalade, moist banana cake, light almond cake, plus gluten free, dairy free and eggfree cakes.
Tina personally delivers all of her cakes to venuesthroughout London and the UK and works closely withher clients, wedding planners, venues and florists toensure that the wedding cake is delivered safely andcarefully assembled, leaving it picture perfect to awaitthe arrival of the bride and groom.

his month Lloyds and Halifax pulled out of the petinsurance market leaving many pet owners worriedabout affording future veterinary treatment for their
insured pets. This is obviously of concern for the individualowners but the profession should also be asking itself;whatʼs gone wrong with pet insurance?
To answer this question requires a bit of history but bearwith me because I think itʼs an interesting allegory for lotsof areas where perverse incentives distort markets.
When I first started seeing practice at veterinary surgeriesin the mid nineties veterinary practices were alwaysowned by veterinary surgeons, pet insurance was veryscarce and internet pharmacies did not exist. Today manypractices are owned by corporations or run as llps, internetpharmacies both regulated and unregulated offermedications at close to wholesale prices and a largeproportion of UK pets are now covered by their ownmedical insurance. These changes have thrown up a hostof, what I imagine are, unintended consequences.
Back in the days when nice Mr Taylor owned the localveterinary surgery and had a monopoly on the supply ofveterinary medicines this was how the majority of profitwas made. Large profit margins on drugs meant thatclinical services such as fixing a broken leg could beprovided at a relative discount, certainly when I was astudent it was very rare to see bills exceeding a fewhundred pounds (although time and geography probablyplayed some part in that). The vet still made a profit andowners werenʼt having to foot large, unexpected bills; this
was insurance by the back door. The opening up ofmedicine supply and the undercutting of large mark ups ondrugs by internet pharmacies meant that vets had toincrease the amount charged for clinical services in orderto maintain their margins. This was spurred on by the otherchanges, corporate ownership putting more of anemphasis on the financial performance of the business andpet insurance meaning owners not having to bear the largeunexpected costs of medical treatment. All of a suddenthere was no incentive for vets to try to keep the cost ofprocedures down and, with vets having a range of humanfrailties just like everyone else, some of them inflated theircosts more than others.
Another dent in the pet insurance model is that almost allanimals will be in the position to incur large medical bills atsome point in their life. So instead of having a pooled potof insurance premiums paying for rare catastrophicallyexpensive incidents, as is the case with home or carinsurance, you essentially have to pay in what youʼre goingto take out. Of course some people will come off slightlybetter than others but in essence it is more like a deferredpayment scheme than insurance.
I do still recommend insurance, making decisionsregarding your petʼs health is difficult enough withouthaving to worry about the cost. It is clear however thatsomething must change. The body that regulates us, theRoyal College, sees its role as ensuring the integrity andcompetence of members rather than interfering in themarket. It relies on individual veterinary surgeons to showrestraint on charging even if, and perhaps especially if, thepet is insured. Otherwise we may soon find pet insurancedisappears altogether, to the detriment of vets, owners andpets alike.

THIS MEANSWAR (2nd March)A trio of hot young Hollywoodstars team up for this action-comedy in the vein of “Mr andMrs Smith” from the director ofthe “Charlie’s Angels” movies. The CIA’s two best agents(Chris Pine and Tom Hardy)become embroiled in apersonal feud when they both fall for the same woman(Reese Witherspoon). They soon begin to abuse theirspy training in various attempts to foil the other man’schances. High on laughs but low in intelligence, it’s thecharisma of the stars makes this comedy work.

BEL AMI (9th March)Robert Pattinson steps out from theworld of “Twilight” to star in thisadaptation of the 1800’s Frenchnovel. Pattinson plays a ruthlessformer soldier, desperate to break intothe world of the rich elite. He does soby seducing three women who aremarried to some of the most powerfulmen in Paris, but balancingthese three affairs proves moredifficult than anticipated. Areasonable drama ruined by alead who clearly is toolightweight for the part, this willenthral die hard ‘R-Patz’ fansbut bore the rest.

JOHN CARTER (9th March)Disney’s mega-budget blockbuster, shot in 3D, about aformer Confederate soldier (Taylor Kitsch) whois transported to Mars and lands right in themiddle of a war between the planet’s variousnations and leaders, including the alien kingTars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe). Completely barmy, the effects and story are entertaining enough, even if the film feels a little too long. You can see where most of the ninefigure budget has been spent, as thereare some quite breath-taking effectsmoments. Not quite “Avatar”, butentertaining nonetheless.

THE DEVIL INSIDE (16th March)A ‘found footage’ (think “Paranormal Activity”) horror about ayoung woman making a documentary on possession, hoping tofind answers as to what made her mother kill three people duringan exorcism. The answers they find lead them to a dark, terrifying, and dangerous place. A terrible movie which stringstogether several tired oldhorror clichés and tries tocall it a movie. Good forcheap scares, but littleelse.

I’ve recently been working with a retailclient & in doing so have discovered some
great tools for running a retail business &setting up an online shop.
Firstly, everyone is talking about ʻPinterestʼ arelatively new social media site set up in2010 that really lends itself to retailbusinesses or businesses whose productsare very visual. It is as the name implies apin board so you can pin any image thatinterests you & organise them into specificcategories. In the same way as Facebookyou have followers who can ʻlikeʼ, ʻcommentʼor ʻrepinʼ your posting, this means your postcould go viral if people find it interesting.
The thing to note with Pinterest is, as withother social media, it is not aboutcontinuously plugging your wears, you dohave to share & comment on others content& be social. Piniterest has been showingamazing results for pushing traffic towebsites so it really is a must for anyone inthe retail business.
Iʼve also been looking at a website calledʻMoonfruitʼ, it allows you to build your ownonline shop & itʼs is really very impressivehow straight forward it can be. There area few different websites offering this
service but for me Moonfruit has the besttemplates & is the easiest to use.
Once you have designed your site Moonfruitpublish your site for the web, mobile & socialmedia, your entire online shop can bepublished to Facebook. By making sureyour site is connected to all the right placesfor you they are taking care of the majority ofyour SEO (search engine optimisation) foryou.
There is an enormous library of backgrounds& images to choose from so you can build aunique site & the option for a PayPalcheckout, this really gives your site aprofessional feel. All the necessary buttonsare available, allowing your customers toʻlikeʼ you to Facebook & tweet interestingproducts.
The standard package is only £7.20 a monthfor a maximum of 50 products making is avery viable product for small businesses.
If you need any help setting up a Pinterest
page or creating a Moonfruit online shop
