“How old are you?” asked Archie the other day. “Old enough” I replied. “Old enough for what?” he countered. “For everything” was my sage retort. “When will I be old enough for everything?” he persisted. “Your time will come soon enough son” I remarked.

The above conversation continued for quite some time - Iwon’t bore you with the details. But isn’t it funny how aschildren we are so desperate to be older to do all those thingsthat dangle like forbidden fruit? Staying up late, using a drill, driving a car are just a few things Archie is hankering after.Conversely as you get older you want to hark back to thetimes when your parents did things for you e.g. having yourtea on the table, being a chauffeur, sorting out the washing.

One thing that none of us are too old or young for is aChristmas present list. As we head towards the jolly (if slightlymanic) season please do try and shop local and support yourlovely businesses when buying presents. From stocking fillersto main presents your local shopping centres have plenty tooffer. If you have children and are dreading the deluge of newtoys, perhaps now is a good time to encourage them to clearout older toys and donate them to those less fortunate. Andfor those that have everything and would like to spread thelove, perhaps a donation to a charity such as the RSPCAmight be just the ticket.Enjoy the build-up and remember – you are only young once!

PS: Talking of growing old ..... slightly miffed by commentfrom the launderette man to me - "yes, I remember it was yourson who dropped off the washing" "umm, no, it was myhusband!"

ritish Osteopathic Association member,

Jill Shooter, a local osteopath, warns

parents and teachers to think about the effect

of heavy school bags on childrenʼs health.

For Back Care Awareness week held inOctober, the British Osteopathic Associationcalled for parents and teachers to considerthe health implications of small bodiescarrying heavy school bags. The BOA wantsimages of children bowed down under theweight of their enormous school bagscrammed full of books to become a thing ofthe past.

Heavy bags can put pressure on the discsbetween the vertebrae which can cause longterm back pain in small and still-developingbodies and children can suffer muscularpain, headaches, tingling and numbness inthe arms and legs and even mobilityproblems.

Osteopath, Jill Shooter, from The Summit inHighgate and a member of the BritishOsteopathic Association, a parent herself, ontreating some of the damage caused bycarrying excessive loads, says: “Childrenshould never carry more than about 15% oftheir own body weight. Parents can help bypacking their children’s rucksacks andmaking sure that the heavier items are nearerto the child’s back. Heavier items on theoutside of the bag tend to throw out thechild’s centre of gravity out of balance, whichleads to bad posture and increases thechances of them straining their back. I findthis is an issue especially for those children inthe first few years at Secondary school, previously only having to deal with a lunchbox or book bag, suddenly having manybooks to deal with. Add to that a musicalinstrument and maybe a sports bag andproblems start!”.

Other suggestions from Jill include:

• A backpack is usually more comfortablethan a bag that puts strain on only oneshoulder, but even that shouldn’t beoverloaded.

• When buying a bag, buy a sturdy bag withwide, padded shoulder straps that reducespressure on the neck and shoulder area. Buya bag with adjustable straps which can bealtered as the child grows.

• Check your child’s posture with the bag on.If you notice them leaning forward orslouching, check if the bag is too heavy or ifit has been packed incorrectly.

• Make sure your child is only carrying theitems they need for school that day – removeany unnecessary books and equipment

• Can any equipment or books be left atschool? Lobby for lockers!

Don’t underestimate the long term effectsfrom carrying these heavy bags on earlydevelopment of posture.

IMMORTALS(11th November).A “300”-style Ancient Greekaction movie, starring HenryCavill (who is currentlyfilming he next Supermanmovie) as a peasant calledTheseus who is charged withsaving the universe when atitan named Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) declares war onhumanity, and the gods, as Zeus puts his faith inTheseus. A loud, CGI-filled spectacular that lookswonderful but does not deliver a coherent story. Rourkeand Cavill are solid leads, and “Slumdog Millionaire”star Freida Pinto adds some class as the love interest, but director Tarsem Singh opts for visuals over content. CP Rating:

THE RUM DIARY (11th November).Superstar Johnny Depp takes the lead in thisadaptation of an early book by his old friendHunter S. Thompson (whom Depp played inthe 1998 film “Fear & Loathing in LasVegas”). He plays Paul Kemp, an Americanjournalist in the early 60’s who decamps toPuerto Rico to work for a newspaper there, developing an obsession for a mysteriouswoman (Amber Heard) and rum. Much likethe book itself, the film feels a lot simplerand less challenging than Thompson’s laterwork, but Depp is a strong lead and thisirreverent comedy just about passes byamiably. CP Rating:

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWNPT. 1 (18th November).Get ready to squeal ‘Twi-Hards’! StephenieMeyer’s world of lovelorn vampires and six-pack sporting werewolves is back for thefourth instalment, the first part of the finalbook in the series (similar to the money-spinning idea the “Harry Potter” films hadwith “The Deathly Hallows”.) Bella (KristenStewart) and her beloved Edward (RobertPattinson) are now married, but their bliss isshort-lived, as a series of betrayals and outside threats will test theirrelationship like never before. At this point in the series, it’s a ‘love itor hate it’ movie, as the characters are so far developed you’re eitherinvested or not. The ending (or rather, mid-point) is jarring, but it’ssure to delight and dismay depending on your persuasion.CP Rating:

50/50 (25th November).A big winner at this year’s London Film Festival,“50/50” is a comedy about a young man (JosephGordon-Levitt) who develops a rare form of cancer, andhis attempts to fight the disease with the help of anoverbearing mother (Angelica Huston) and a best friendwho just tries to get him ‘sympathy hook ups’ (SethRogen). A comedy about an awful disease may not bean obvious choice, but this is a moving, hilarious anddelicately handled film, thatattacks a serious subjectwith warmth and realism. Will split your sides and puta lump in your throat.CP Rating:

Enfield’s Law gets tough on knife crimeDavid

Burrowesn April, a 15-year-old called NegusMcClean was stabbed and killed whiletrying to prevent a gang stealing his

brother’s phone. In July, two rival gangspublicly fought with machetes, knives andguns. The members of these gangs wereyouths, and a sixteen year old was stabbedin the hand.

These two harrowing cases have threestriking similarities. The first is that they bothinvolve knife crime. The second is that bothinvolve youths. The third is that bothoccurred in our borough of Enfield.

Knife crime has become an all too familiaroccurrence. Knife attacks are no longershocking; and have become a permanentfixture in the local paper. Almost every weekthere is a story of knife crime that has yetagain blighted the community. Enfield, ofcourse, is not alone in feeling thedevastating affects of knife crime but it is aproblem that is becoming synonymous withthe London Borough due to its frequency.

Against this background togetherwith my constituency neighbourNick de Bois MP we havechampioned the need to gettougher on knife crime. I havebeen able to draw on myexperience as a solicitor in youthcourts for the last 17 yearsseeing knife crime as a ‘blindspot’ when it comes tosentencing. Together we havemade a compelling case toministers for change tolegislation.

We have now had accepted an amendmentto the Sentencing Bill to have mandatory

sentences handeddown to offendersaged 16 and 17 andover who use knives in athreatening manner. I recognise thatinterventions need to happen a whole lotearlier to tackle the knife culture that hasdeveloped in Enfield and elsewhere. However the reality is that any youthwielding a knife and threatening someone’slife should already expect to be locked upfor longer than 2 months. Threateningsomeone with a knife is a very seriousoffence that deserves to be punished with alengthy sentence. The new law simplymakes it clear that if you are 16 or aboveyou must go to prison for a minimum time.

In the wake of the August riots and withescalating knife crime the nation wasshaking its head in disapproval at Enfield. Now with what we now call Enfield’s law thenation can nod its head in approval.

n this month’s finance section I will give you somethoughts on what is going on in the globaleconomy then return to the subject of saving and

answer last month’s teaser on pensions.

Well after all the autumnal sunshine the weatherseems to have broken and we are getting somemuch needed rain, a bit like the Eurozone really, it’sbroken but politicians have at last reached asolution by putting a sticking plaster over theproblem and given us some breathing space!

Undoubtedly it is in all our interests for theEurozone to work and have a healthy economy, after all half our trade is donewith Europe but the problem iswe are in a period whereindividuals, companies andgovernments are all paying offdebt at the same time. Theinevitable consequences of thisare lower growth, higherunemployment and lowerstandards of living.

And the response to this by governments is to defythe markets and effectively turn Europe into onelarge command economy……….and we knowwhat happened to the Soviet Union, the last largecommand economy!!

After years of spending and taking on personaldebt the “baby boomer” generation (yes, I’m one ofthem) is telling its offspring to save more for thefuture, which is very difficult to do when any sparemoney is being used to either pay off student debtor maintain lifestyle as real incomes decrease. Sothe paradox is that saving is incompatible with adebt laden economy.

Wow where does that leave us? Going back to lastmonth’s article I commented that:

“Even if you are not in a company scheme you canset up your own personal pension where you caneither make monthly contributions or a lump sum ofup to £50,000 each year. Why would I do that I hearyou say when the investment market is souncertain at the moment.......”

Well the government are very generous with regardto tax relief on pension contributions. If you haveset up your own pension, a personal pension, youpay Income Tax on your earnings before anypension contribution, but the pension providerclaims tax back from the government at the basicrate of 20 per cent. In practice, this means that for

every £80 you pay into your pension, you end up with £100 in your pensionpot. If you pay tax at higher rate, youcan claim the difference through yourtax return or by telephoning or writingto HMRC. If you're an additional ratetaxpayer you'll have to claim thedifference through your tax return.

In addition, any increase in the value of yourpension pot over the years is free from capitalgains tax.

Clearly these are great benefits but what is thecatch? For a twenty five year old one catch wouldbe that you can’t get at the money until you are fiftyfive (under the current rules) although some wouldsay this is a good thing!

As ever, before deciding what to do it pays to take

advice and our pensions experts are around to take

your call on 01582 715777.

he ‘Friends’ superstar discussesgetting nasty in her film “HorribleBosses”.

She’s always been everyone’s favourite ‘Friend’ asthe lovable Rachel Green during the 1990’s, butthis month we see a different side to her in theDVD release of her summer hit, “Horrible Bosses”.She plays a sexually inappropriate boss harassingher male assistant (comedian Charlie Day), butdid this darker role worry her? “No!Not at all and that was the fun of it…how far it went” she replies. “And itreally went for it… the whole entiremovie really went for it. It didn’t do‘sort of Horrible Bosses’! They werereally horrible.”

Getting ‘horrible’ involved being insome compromising situations, particularly with her co-starDay, where amongother things sheappears half naked, with her modestycovered by a dentist’sovercoat! Althoughshe was more thangame she foundfilming uncomfortableat times. “It wasembarrassing for me tohave to basically meetCharlie [Day] and afterone day have to straddle him. I was embarrassedfor myself. I hope he forgives me!”

Outside of the movie, she has had a great career

on the big screen, but viewers will forever knowher as Rachel from the defining 90’s TV show“Friends”. How does she feel about thisassociation, and how does she look back on the

character? “Fondly… I look backat her fondly” she nods. “She wasa lot of fun. As for fans, I getpeople still referring to me asRachel. But nobody is upsetabout this” The momentum hasmeant, recently, she earned a staron the Hollywood walk of fame. “Itwas an unbelievable honour. It wasamazing and surreal” she beams.

Finally, as her co-star in the filmKevin Spacey has been associatedwith The Old Vic Theatre for years, would she ever consider treadingthe boards? “Oh yes, I have and Iwould love to” she says. “I did the24-Hour Plays. I started at bad

theatre in New York, I did public theatre andthings that aren’t remembered! But yeah, I lovethe theatre and I would love to go back to it if theright thing presented itself.”

“Horrible Bosses” is released on DVD 21stNovember.

Bobble – Making Water BetterFollowing the popularity of last months article on Green Pan, we thought we would introduce you

to another eco-friendly brand available at Papylon, Winchmore Hill.

Bobble was founded in 2008 by two design entrepreneurs

whose mission was to protect our environment by designing

affordable, sustainable products. Having discovered that

the world consumes more than 200 billion single-serve

bottles of water each year, the pair decided to create a

stylish alternative. Their first product bobble is a re-useable,

filtered water bottle engineered to change peoples drinking

habits by slowing the mass consumption of single-serve water bottles.

Designed with an internal carbon filter to remove chlorine and organic contaminants,

bobble makes municipal tap water healthier and better with every sip. Each filter

equates to 300 single-serve bottles, so by opting for a bobble and filtering the water

from our taps, we can remove thousands of plastic bottles from our environment

every year.

Like Green Pans, bobble water bottles are a convenient and easy way for us to

reduce our carbon footprint. By simply changing the products we use, we can make

a difference without even realizing so. Bobble believes that a sustainable future can

be enabled by smart design and we too feel the same.

So if you want to boost your eco-credentials and improve your health, pop along to

Papylon and pick up a bobble bottle.

Bottles are available in 385ml and 550ml and priced from £8.99.

Filters are available in a variety of colours and priced at £6.99.

BUS ROUTE 318The London Borough of Enfield’s Public TransportConsultative Group, upon which sits a CommitteeMember of the Residents’ Association, has beencampaigning for many years on an extension ofthe 318 bus route from North Middlesex Hospitalthrough Winchmore Hill to Highlands Village. Theroute would extend through Silver Street, HedgeLane, Firs Lane, Barrowell Green, Green Lanesand Green Dragon Lane and readers will note thiswill serve a number of passenger generatingcentres.

However, Transport for London has persistentlydenied that this would have any benefit and haveraised the issue of negative cost benefit. This isnow arguable due to several recent decisions.

1. The construction of the North London HospiceOutreach Centre in Barrowell Green.

2. The extended school provision at Highlandsand Firs Farm.

3. The increased usage of North MiddlesexHospital due to changes envisaged at ChaseFarm.

One of the measurable criteria formulated by TFLfor deciding on the need for a bus route is themaximum distance of 500m. of pedestrian travelto any bus route. An area around Firs Lane andBarrowell Green falls well outside this distance.

To date Transport for London are maintaining animmovable stance but with the constant changesin the District we feel convinced that the need willcontinue to grow.

PLANNINGMATTERSIn monitoring the planning applications submitted

to the Council we note there is a continuing andgrowing number of householders wishing toextend their houses. While the need for largeraccommodation may be to just increase space orsatisfy increased family size, it will in itselfultimately create a mix of dwelling types which willnot match the demographic shape of thepopulation. Far too many larger dwellings will beavailable at too great a cost. The affluent timeswe have experienced will no longer be there andthe affordability of houses too large for needs willnot be achieved.

In addition to this, many houses are beingenlarged to such an extent that the space aroundthem is totally disappearing. Where the classicsemi-detached house with space for a garagebeside it was common in Winchmore Hill, thesespaces are being filled and we are ending upwith, to all intents and purposes, a continuousterrace. Is that what we really want to see inWinchmore Hill?

This need for expansion is also happening in ourmost luxurious roads where large houses arebeing demolished and replacement houses two orthree times larger are constructed. What is thepoint of all this space which inevitably ends upwith increased energy consumption and a furthernail in “green” credentials?

Page 36: The N21 Directory - Grange Park London N21

This month I’ve been taking some

time to look at Paper Tiger a digital

filing system.

There are two aspects to this programme,

firstly it’s a great place to store documents

online, in a secure location ,allowing them to

be shared between computers and users;

secondly, the other very useful aspect is that

it allows you to manage your existing paper

files.

If you run the type of business that requires

large amounts of paper documents to be

easily accessed then this could be great for

you.

The beauty of this

programme is that it’s

a simple & effective

way to index your files.

It’s easy to use and

has good videos on its

website demonstrating

how it works.

The basics are that

you create an online location to mirror your

paper / physical location and you give them

both the same name i.e Draw A. Then you

divide the location into the same amount of

folders giving them all corresponding names,

Paper Tiger even creates the labels for you

to print off. The really clever bit is that you

can add several ‘keywords’ to your online

document, these can be anything that helps

to identify it. When the next person needs to

search for the document they can use the

online search box, simply typing in a word

just as if they were searching Google.

There are other great features like

‘Categories’ which allow you to link files that

contain related information and you are

alerted if you try to create a duplicate file.

So the essence of this programme is that it

means you can search for a file by its

contents rather than its physical location.

This could be a great time saver if your

business depends on keeping lots of

paperwork, but it also allows you to turn your

paper documents into PDFs and store them

online so you can actually eliminate the need

for a paper copy.

The basic online package is $4

per month or $40 for the year,

there are also desktop versions

for PC’s but I wouldn’t

recommend saving things to

computers unless you have a

good back-up system in place,

far better to save to an online

location.

Take a look for yourself at

www.thepapertiger.com
