Preheat oven to 130 C (275 F for US users). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay.

Condition all clay by kneading until its soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for

several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

The Mokume Gane Slab technique, often referred to as random pattern Mokume Gane, creates patterns in sheets of polymer clay. Adding sheets of metal leaf, alcohol inks and glitters can add an additional layer of interest.

Pass 3 main colors through the Clay Conditioning Machine on the thickest setting. Create equal size sheets of each color.

    S T E P 2

Layer the sheets on top of each other and press together with a hand roller.

    S T E P 3

Press the layered slab back through the pasta machine on the thickest setting.

Divide the thin sheet into 6 or 8 pieces.

Layer the pieces on top of each other. Roll over them to seal together. Use hand pressure to secure the sheets together and to form up the sides.

Use a Ball Tool to press deep wells down through the new slab. Make random cuts with the Super Slicer Wavy Blade.

    S T E P 6

Using hand pressure, push the slab back together sealing up the empty holes and pushing the cuts back together.

    S T E P 7

Turn the slab up on edge. Slice down through the slab parallel to the stripes in the slab. The pattern will be revealed.

If you wish to fill the holes with a contrasting color do so after poking the holes in step 5.

    S T E P 9

Using hand pressure, push the slab back together pushing the cuts back together.

Make a base bead shape with scrap clay. Slice a thin layer from your Mokume Gane slab. If desired, you can make the layer thinner by pressing it through the pasta machine.

After youve created a slab of Mokume Gane, its easy to use thin sheets of it to make large beads.

    S T E P 2

Trim a straight edge along the thin layer. Line the base bead up with the straight edge.

    S T E P 3

Roll the base bead up inside the Mokume Gane layer. Trim the ends and edges. Roll the bead to smooth. Poke holes as desired.
