Head Master of Arts Therapies Nicki Wentholt

Beginning in September 2016 Codarts offers a unique music therapy programme at master’s level based in a conservatoire. Set up to broaden the professional opportunities for experienced musicians, music teachers and bachelor music therapists* the programme is open to other professionals as well with a solid musical background. The programme covers the main areas in contemporary music therapy and methods, clinical training and research, based on a highly skilled musicianship and looks at music from psychological, biological, physical, expres-sive, cultural and social perspectives. This master offers the opportunity for advanced professional training and specialisation.

International collabarationThe Master in Music Therapy will run alongside the already existing internationally orientated Master in Dance Therapy. Together these two masters form Codarts’ Master of Arts Therapies. The dance and music therapy disciplines work together in generic subjects. Music therapy skills, methods, theory and supervision are offered separately. With this music therapy master the internationally well-known professional training in dance therapy, with a strong basis in dance, gets an equivalent for music therapy with an equally strong basis in music.

The curriculum is developed in collaboration with the Music Therapy Master of Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK, with Professor Helen Odell-Miller as consultant. The international teaching faculty is composed of professionals with extensive teaching and professional therapeutic experience.

Critical ReflectionCentral teaching concepts include discovery through experiential learning and integration of theory and practice. The underlying foundation in different theories encourages and enhances critical reflection. Students are able to integrate knowledge and skills that are fundamental to both the theory and practice of music therapy and can apply recent research within clinical practice. Engaging in personal therapy during the education is required.
