Instructions This booklet has been designed to help students and families work through the subject selection process for Year 7 at Marryatville High School. Students should follow the steps below:

PART 1 – Our Curriculum

• Familiarize yourself with the: o Middle Years Curriculum Model – page 2 o Year 7 curriculum offerings – page 3 o Year 7 subject descriptors – page 4 & 5

PART 2 – Year 7 Planner

• Year 7 students are enrolled into a particular pathway namely, Mainstream, Specialist Tennis, Elective Music or Special Interest Music.

• Depending on their pathway, they will need to make a number of subject selections in readiness for staring high school

• The Planner on page 6 shows each of the pathways including the number and type of choices required.

• Students should use the planner to map out their subject choices

• Use the Curriculum subject lists and subject descriptors on page 3 & 4 to help with decision making.

• In addition to the core subjects, most students will need to list: o A Language Preference – Japanese or French o A Technologies Preference – Digital, Food or Materials o An Arts Preference – Drama, Media Arts, Visual Arts o A Free Choice Preference – from any of the above

• Students are asked to make Reserve choices because it may not be possible to accommodate all preferences. They may be assigned a subject that is not on their preference list.

• NB. Students will get to choose again from these options in Year 8

PART 3 – Subject Selection Sheet

• Select the appropriate subject selection sheet from page 7 to 10, based on the enrolment pathway.

• Using the Planner from page 5 as a guide, complete the subject selection sheet by filling in all required boxes.

• Note: Compulsory course = purple boxes, Required courses = blue boxes, Free Choice = green boxes

• Select from the Year 7 subject list only.

• It is vital that any Reserve choices are in priority order.

PART 4 - Web Preferences

• Web Preferences is the system that we use to collect subject choice information for all students.

• Log onto Web Preferences using the information provided by email.

• Enter the Preferences (blue and green boxes) and Reserve selections (yellow boxes) into the system

• Submit to finalize selections for Year 7

Year 7 – Choice Subject Descriptors

Year 7 English – Turning The PAge Year 7 EALD (special criteria for this choice) Year 7 Language - Japanese

Are you interested in: Turning the page into your high school journey by discussing and questioning texts before writing your own stories and arguments

What we do: You will examine a variety of effective techniques that writers employ across a range of different text types including novels, poetry, film, digital media and more!. You will then use these techniques to create our own interesting and engaging texts.

What we learn: You will read stories and create our own, explore different worlds and characters, and discuss, examine and argue. You will also look at the best ways of communicating our ideas and use a range of technology. Central to this will be looking at language and grammar and how your choices impact an intended audience.

Are you interested in: Exploring your world through creative and imaginative texts? What we do:

You will become a confident communicator, imaginative thinker and informed citizen. You will learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around you. You will engage imaginatively and critically with informational, persuasive and creative texts. You will listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on spoken, written and multimodal texts.

What we learn: You will learn how texts are structured to achieve particular purposes. You will gain an understanding that language use varies according to social setting and the relationships between the participants. You will create a range of spoken, written and multimodal texts that entertain, inform and persuade audiences.

Are you interested in: Exploring Japanese calligraphy, foods and having everyday conversations in Japanese.

What we do: You will use written and spoken Japanese to interact with others and exchange information and opinions about personal interests, experiences and important cultural aspects such as calligraphy and food.

What we learn: You will study the topics of Hiragana, Introductions, Friends, Family, Food, Daily Routines and My City. Communication competencies include; recognise and use Hiragana and some Kanji and Katakana; introduce yourself in Japanese; use numbers 1-1000; describe your family members and friends; describe your city or town; talk about what you do on weekends and after school; and talk about your meal and what you like to eat

Year 7 Language - French Year 7 Elective Music A - Crash into Music Year 7 Elective Music A - Music Industry

Are you interested in: Speaking in French about yourself, your family, friends, food and pets?

What we do: You will develop your ability to speak and write in the French language by actively participating in in-class and out-of-class language-building activities. You will practise speaking in French and you will be immersed in French through food, film and music. You will understand how the French language works on a grammatical level. You will describe yourself, your family, friends and pets in group, pair or whole-class activities that will support developing your language skills in French. You will compare the French-speaking world to your own.

What we learn: You will study a range of aural and written authentic texts in French, focusing on the relevant vocabulary and corresponding grammar. You will be learning to speak in French in various real life-like situations, and speak and write about yourself, your family, friends and pets in French.

Are you interested in: Playing, creating and listening to music.

What we do: You will explore compositional techniques, harmony and melody writing and apply these techniques to your own composition. You will explore instruments of the orchestra and a variety of music including Indigenous Australian music. You will learn to play the ukulele, sing in a group, learn an instrument and play in an ensemble.

What we learn: You will learn basic ukulele skills and vocal techniques, developing aural awareness, rhythmic and harmonic understanding. A range of skills to enable you to create and perform music. You will create soundscapes and video game music using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). You will also develop skills in music performance, teamwork and stage craft.

Are you interested in: Music industry skills, listening to and composing music.

What we do: You will navigate a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), and explore compositional techniques, harmony and melody writing. You will apply these techniques to your own composition. You will explore a variety of music including Indigenous Australian music. You will investigate how to setup the stage for a performance. You will experience an introduction to playing the piano, singing in a group and have the option to learn an instrument in small groups.

What we learn: You will learn basic piano skills and vocal techniques, developing aural awareness, rhythmic and harmonic understanding. A range of skills to enable you to navigate a DAW, creating musical soundscapes and Electronic Dance Music (EDM). You will learn some live sound engineering techniques.

Year 7 Arts - Media Arts Photography and Film Year 7 Arts - Visual Arts - Art and Design Year 7 Arts - Drama - Dramarama

Are you interested in: Creative photography and stop-motion filmmaking?

What we do: You will experiment with creative photography using DSLR cameras. You will view and respond to a range of short films and work collaboratively with others to create your own short stop motion films using a range of materials such as clay, paper, fabric and found objects.

What we learn: You will learn about what makes an image work in photography and film, gaining an understanding of the elements of composition that apply to both photography and film. You will learn to use technology to capture photographs/film (for example, DSLR camera and webcam). You will learn to use photography and filmmaking software (for example Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro). You will learn to develop a concept for a film through storyboarding and to work collaboratively with others to record video clips and edit a film.

Are you interested in: Creating, learning visually, and making works of art and design?

What we do: You will use a range of different art media e.g. graphite and coloured pencils, paint, clay, design tools to make art. You will participate in excursions to Art Gallery of SA, or relevant, to learn about artists and why/ how they create. You will research cultural links with Aboriginal Torres Strait Islanders to art, storytelling and themes. You will use the elements of design planning to create a logo.

What we learn: You will learn to experiment with ideas and themes, to develop planning skills for art and design making by exploring techniques and processes used by different artists and designers. You will learn to practice techniques and processes to improve the final resolution of your ideas in making art and design. You will learn to display your ideas and present an artwork with consideration to captivate your intended audience.

Are you interested in: How do you tell a story using drama?

What we do: You will be completing practical workshops and reflection tasks to use drama techniques to tell a variety of stories. You will watch live or filmed performances and use them as research tools, to create small performances that explore the many ways you can tell a story to an audience. You will create work in groups, taking on different roles, such as off-stage or onstage that help to tell different stories in different ways.

What we learn: You will learn how to work collaboratively, how to communicate effectively, improvisation techniques and how to apply different drama styles to create work. You will learn the building blocks of Drama and how they fit together to make meaning for an audience. Your will learn about Drama through time and place, and how others use drama to tell stories and how it can reflect what is happening in the world. You will also learn how to read performances and reflect on your own and other's work.

Are you interested in: Learning to create a better future by Designing and Developing new products and ideas

What we do: You will be taken through a design process to develop a tool for preserving native wildlife. You will use tools to develop personalised products for a micro-business. You will complete a series of challenges in order to further understand the design process and how it can be applied in real life situations.

What we learn: You will develop skills and knowledge in the areas of idea generation, product design, advanced prototyping, production techniques and reflective evaluation. You will be able to use these skills to develop your own products and ideas outside of the school environment to solve problems, develop opportunities, and meet emerging needs. You will develop skills and knowledge which can be applied to creating new products and business opportunities.

Are you interested in: Learning new ways to cook for yourself and others?

What we do: You will produce and serve a range of dishes using fresh ingredients and technology. You will engage in effective communication through negotiation skills with peers. You will develop solutions to problems using the design cycle including investigating, designing, producing and evaluating.

What we learn: You will learn about safety and hygiene skills and understanding school cooking procedures and systems. You will look at our local connection to the Kaurna culture, understanding food selection, and reducing waste, with links to the Australian Guideline of Healthy Eating. You will gain confidence with a range of different cooking methods and technologies. Depending on classroom availability other areas may be introduced such as Kaurna sustainability and basic sewing skills.

Are you interested in: Understanding how the digital world has influence our own? Learn how the digital world works and how you can change the future by becoming a part of the digital revolution!

What we do: You will explore the 4 key components of computational thinking strategies. You will also develop skills in a programming language, understanding its structure and syntax to create solutions. You will design and produce a solution that meets user's requirements. You will develop and build on your Digital systems knowledge to identify how data is transmitted between digital systems.

What we learn: You will develop your understanding of the 4 components of Computational thinking and apply them. You will learn how to solve everyday problems, and apply these skills to create digital solutions. You will develop the skills and understanding to ensure a robot can be coded to perform a range of actions. You build on your ability to plan and document a digital solution. You will learn about digital systems and how data is transmitted between digital systems in various locations.

Year 7 Free Choice - Elective Music B - Hit the Stage Year 7 Free Choice - Elective Music B - Into the Studio Year 7 Free Choice – HPE - Dancing for Life

Are you interested in: Playing, creating and listening to music.

What we do: You will explore compositional techniques, harmony and melody writing and apply these techniques to your own composition. You will explore musical genres from around the world, create your own musical instrument and make music with it. You will experience an Introduction to drumming, sing in a group, learn an instrument and play in an ensemble.

What we learn: You will learn basic drumming skills and vocal techniques, developing aural awareness, rhythmic and harmonic understanding. You will develop a range of skills to enable you to create and perform music. You will develop an understanding of the use of music and sound effects to create mood and atmosphere in film. You will also develop skills in music performance, teamwork and stage craft.

Are you interested in: Recording, listening to and composing music.

What we do: You will create drum patterns, record instruments and navigate a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). You will explore compositional techniques, harmony and melody writing and apply these techniques to your own composition. You will investigate microphones and recording techniques. You will learn to play the ukulele, sing in a group and have the option to learn an instrument in small groups.

What we learn: You will learn basic ukulele skills and vocal techniques, developing aural awareness, rhythmic and harmonic understanding. You will develop recording skills, drum patterns and navigation of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). You will listen to a range of music, analyse stylistic features and compose a piece in your chosen style.

Are you interested in: Dance activities that allow you to experience movement through many cultures across the world.

What we do: You will learn to make and respond to different dance styles, through group performances. You will learn about and explore cultural diversity through dance.

What we learn: You will choose from a range of organised cultural dances, devise and develop your own interpretation of cultural dance. You will also have the opportunity to devise your own costumes and learn about dance fitness, and the principals of dance movement.

Are you interested in: Physical activity, staying active and enjoying activities outside conventional organised sports and collaborating with others?

What we do: You will have opportunities to learn in, through and about physical activities. This is done through active engagement in individual, group and team-based activities – leading to the development of vocational, life and physical skills.

What we learn: You will choose from a range of organised games and sports and choose activities that promote lifelong physical health. You will also learn about fitness factors and principles of training.
