The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah
Parts: Narrator, Abraham, servant, Rebekah,
Laban
Narrator: Now Abraham was very old, and he
wanted to see his grandchildren, so he called in
his servant.
Abraham: Servant! [Servant comes in] Promise
me by the God who created Heaven and earth
that you will find my son a wife from among the
people of Ur. I want Isaac to marry someone
from my people
3
Servant: I will try, but what if she won’t come
back with me?
Abraham: God brought me here, and wants me
here. If she does not want to come back, then I
release you from the promise, and you can find
a wife elsewhere.
Narrator: Then the servant left with several
camels loaded up with all sorts of good things.
He had presents for the future bride, and
provisions for the journey.
Servant: Lord, please guide me. Give me
success today. If there is a girl who comes and
offers to draw water not only for me, but for
my camels, let her be the one.
4
Narrator: A few minutes later a beautiful
young woman came forward.
Rebekah: Sir do you need help? Let me get
water for you and your camels.
Narrator: Suddenly it was like fireworks went
off, and the servant knew she was the one.
Servant: Where is your father? May I stay the
night at your house?
Narrator: Now in that time there weren’t really
inns, so it was customary for travelers to stay in
the house of people they met in the next city or
5
by the side of the road. It was also customary
to give your host a present. Abraham’s servant
gave Rebekah a beautiful bracelet and ring.
Rebekah: I am Bethuel’s daughter, we have
plenty of hay for your camels. Please stay with
us.
Narrator: Rebekah had a brother named Laban,
and he saw the servant and knew he was
important.
Laban: Come, rest with us We have more than
enough room.
6
Servant: I must tell you why I am here. My
master, Abraham, sent me to find a wife for his
son. I saw your sister and thought she would
make a wonderful wife. She is an answer to
prayer, and I thank God for her. Tell me, may
she come with me to marry Isaac?
Laban: Who am I to stand in the way of God?
She may go with you.
Narrator: The servant bowed down and
thanked them and then praised God for the
swift answer to prayer. The next morning the
servant left with Rebekah. They rode on camel
for a while, when the servant said:
7
Servant: Look, there is Isaac coming over the
hill.
Narrator: Isaac was coming back from a day
hunting out in the fields. Isaac came running
up to see what was going on.
Servant: Isaac, this is to be your wife.
Isaac: Wow, she’s beautiful! What a great
wife.
Rebekah: And you are to be my husband.
8
Narrator: They were married that day, and
lived happily ever after…. Well mostly, but
that’s another story.
