1640 Panel Session: Preparing for Disruptive Innovation The theory of disruptive innovation was invented by Clayton Christensen, of Harvard Business School, in his book “The Innovator’s

Dilemma”. Christensen used the term to describe innovations that create new markets by discovering new categories of customers. They do this partly by harnessing new technologies but also by developing new business models and exploiting old technologies in new ways. He contrasted disruptive innovation with sustaining innovation, which simply improves existing products. Personal computers, for example, were disruptive innovations because they created a new mass market for computers; previously, expensive mainframe computers had been sold only to big companies and research universities.

Disruptive innovations usually find their first customers at the bottom of the market: as unproved, often unpolished, products, they cannot command a high price. Incumbents are often complacent, slow to recognise the threat that their inferior competitors pose. But as successive refinements improve them to the point that they start to steal customers, they may end up reshaping entire industries: classified ads (Gumtree), long distance calls (Skype), record stores (iTunes), research libraries (Google), local stores (eBay), taxis (Uber), hotels and international accommodation (AirBnB), newspapers (Twitter). *

How might disruptive innovation impact the maritime community and what should we be doing to ready for this? Moderated by: Neville Smith, Director, Mariner Communications

Panelists include: Peter Van de Venne, Director – IT Department, Spliethoff Ton Arrachart, Former CIO at Van Oord Martin Reason, European Sales Director Maritime, SpeedCast Dr Chris Moody, Chief Business Development Officer, Transportation Systems Catapult

1720 The Future of Unmanned Vessels Autonomous and unmanned vessels are seen as a key element for a competitive and sustainable European shipping industry in

the future. But what is the future of shipping? Are unmanned and autonomous shipping feasible – and are they desirable? The EU-supported research project MUNIN has recently completed its activities and the coordinators will present the main conclusions.

• Why do we need the unmanned ship? The application areas, how it will look, the costs and the benefits. Hans-Christoph Burmeister, Group Leader “Sea Traffic and Nautical Solutions”, Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and

Services CML • How do make the unmanned ship feasible? What are the obstacles and how do we propose to solve them? Ørnulf Jan Rødseth, Senior Scientist, MARINTEK Dep. Maritime Transport Systems
