Lively Up Yourself - Street Festival starts with a BANG!

The South Dunedin Street Festival will start

with a bang on Saturday 3 November.

Amadeo Enrique-Ballastero, the Discovery World Coordinator, scientist and magic maker will be creating a BANG to mark the official opening at 11am (although the Festival will be open from 10am.) The City of Dunedin Pipe Band will then perform, giving us a truly Dunedin start to the day.

Some of the activities and attractions so far are:

Mitre 10 Mega will be here all day with different DIY demonstrations every 15 minutes and their famous “Easy As” attraction where staff help children to complete simple DIY projects.

There will be a Move It zone with a demonstration of wheelchair basketball and the chance to have a go yourself, along with wheelchair self-defence. Anytime Fitness will conduct a class which you are welcome to join.

The Crooked Spoke bike repair people will be there – learn how to look after your bike!

Stitch Kitchen will be teaching people how to make tote bags from recycled fabric, in The Armitage, along with members of Grey Power who will be teaching people how to knit and crochet.

There’s a Kids Zone with craft, face painting and other fun things for littlies to do.

Lots of stalls and information about anything from an array of groups working in our community including DCC and the Library team and a chance to have a say about what we need in our new Community Centre and library

And of course there is the food! Community hui focus on managing climate change risks

Sixty people from South Dunedin took part in the third South Dunedin Community Hui on Tuesday 18th September, at the Blind Foundation. There was a wide representation of the various groups and communities that make up South Dunedin - older people, Pacifika, different ‘villages’ like Caversham, St Clair, Corstorphine, people living with disabilities, young people, church communities and more!

The Community Hui provided an opportunity for people from all around our community to connect, collaborate and be heard. The focus of discussion was the threat of rising water levels and climate change. Representatives from the DCC gave presentations and engaged with participants about their concerns.

Maria Ioannou, the DCC Corporate Policy Manager, wanted to find out what we thought was the best way for the community to be consulted about climate change. She spoke of three ways that have been used overseas, varying from smaller representative groups to community wide workshops. The feeling of the meeting was that we all want to have our voice heard, initially at least, and that community representatives need to be involved with any decision making groups.

Then Tom Dyer, the 3 Waters Group Manager spoke about the complexity of managing waste and storm water in South Dunedin. He acknowledged that there were no quick fixes and that the DCC was still modelling possible solutions to be sure they are actually viable. He has assured us that consultation will take place before any decisions are taken by the DCC.

The Hui participants had some questions and comments of course. People were concerned about the pace of decision making and the need to develop climate change discussions rather than simply repeating the same points. It was

recognized that the Hui was part of an ongoing conversation between the community and the DCC and similar events will be held in the near future.

We were fed, again, by the Catholic Social Services Monday Lunch group, who did amazing

things with rescued food. Thanks!

It was wonderful to hear from the different groups and individuals in the room, about what they do and what they want to have happen in the community. Some ideas were a Wheels Day where vehicles ranging from wheelchairs to skateboards will have some fun together; a Garden Tour of South Dunedin; a pool for the kids in Corstorphine; a community pantry in Musselburgh….. and much more.

The next Hui will be early next year and all are welcome. It will be advertised through Dunedin news sites on Facebook, the Lowdown and via email. If you want to be notified by email let Eleanor know at [email protected] or ring Catholic Social Services on 455 3838.

We are very happy to announce that the South Dunedin Community Network – a group which has evolved from the Community Hui – applied for and was granted $64,715 by the DCC to fund community work in South Dunedin.

We hope to have a community worker in place in the new year. The next Community Hui will be held in February, where we can all have input into the development of a Community Plan. More details in the New Year.

Those readers who have been paying attention will be aware that the Early Years Hub (in the

former Forbury School premises) recently faced closure, after losing funding. They have gained a lifeline from the DCC to enable them to operate until the end of June next year.
