We had a midterm break two weekends ago. I went home to Buffalo to hang out with family. My mother suggested we see a movie. Naturally, being the movie fan that I am, I thought this was a pretty good idea. We went to see Gone Girl which is a film based off of the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn. The film was directed by David Fincher who you may remember directed Fight Club, Se7en and most recently, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I am prefacing Flincher’s filmography to let you know the kind of movie Gone Girl was. I am not here to review the film or spoil the film for you, but to enlighten you on a trend that I have become a victim of. That trend is book-to-film movies.

Gone Girl is a New York Times Best Seller, yet I have never read it. This has been the case for many books in my lifetime. From the Harry Potter novels to the Hunger Games series, I have seen a ridiculous amount of films that were previously books. I can remember four books that I read before seeing the movie off the top of my head. Those books are the third and fourth Harry Potter books, The Great Gatsby and Holes. Zach Warren.

I feel that many people end up seeing a movie instead of reading a book. Let’s face it, movies kick ass, and books are lame, but I’m here to urge people to change this trend. I am a tainted member of society, I saw the first two Hunger Games films, and I am purposely not reading the third book. The reason is that I don’t want to ruin the film’s end. I could read the book and, in a day or two, know the end of the series, but I know I will enjoy seeing the movie without knowing anything about it. I did

the same thing with Harry Potter. I saw the first two films and thought, “I think I’ll read the books.” I got through the third and fourth and decided, “Eh, the movies are better. I’ll just wait.”

Here is my plea to all of you: please read. Reading is good for your brain, and watching TV and movies melts your brain. You stifle your imagination and basically eliminate your attention span when you abandon reading. Granted, I am not a doctor, so I can’t confirm that watching too much TV melts your brain, but I can tell you from personal experience that I feel like my brain works significantly slower when I am not reading regularly.

I blame the film industry for being so damn good at their jobs. I can honestly tell you the only books I ever enjoyed more than the film adaptations were The Great Gatsby and Less Than Zero. I read both of those books in high school and loved them. Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of The Great Gatsby left a lot to be desired (besides Leo who killed it). Harley Peyton who wrote the screenplay for Bret Easton Ellis’ novel Less Than Zero left out most of the craziness that made that book great, and he took a lot of artistic freedom with the script. So yea, besides those two films, every book adaptation I have ever seen tops the novel. One more note about Less Than Zero as a film, it starred Andrew McCarthy who you probably know from Pretty in Pink, and he was just awful. That guy got work in the 80’s because expectations were so low. All you had to do was be attractive and you were famous. Robert Downey Jr. and James Spader were also in it, but even they couldn’t save that script.

In conclusion, pick up a book and read Gone Girl, and then see the movie. It was pretty good. Oh, and say a prayer for Shia Labeouf; he seems to need Jesus.

From the EDITORS...

We’d like to officially dedicate this page to the new Letter from the Editors. We thought it was the least we could do considering you (as readers) see our names on page two every month, but you never actually know what we look like or who we are.

With that, we are Morgan Statt and Alexandra (Allie) Napoli: junior Strategic Communication majors who live together with our two best friends, (shoutout to) Jillian Hammell and Jackie Roberts in the Townhouses.

We began writing for The Buzzworthy when we were freshmen. We wrote for then-Editor-in-Chief, Karly Gombert (another shoutout). We co-wrote a few stories, and that’s basically when our friendship began.

*Pause for dramatic effect*There’s no real smooth transition into getting to know us, so we’ll just get right

into it. Together, our favorite things consist of: magazines (specifically Vogue and Elle). I (Allie, because I’m currently writing) tend to gravitate towards Cosmopolitan while Morgan would rather pick up a Women’s Health mag. That being said, Morgan loves working out (she wakes up at 6 a.m. every morning for her run). She also loves traveling. She’s been to Quebec, London, and Mexico and will be studying in Prague next semester. She’s one of the smartest people I know (probably the smartest person I know), and doesn’t even have to try; although she tries. Very, very hard. When I visit her house in Rochester, or she comes to me in Buffalo, we enjoy visiting coffee shops and shopping for clothes we don’t have money to buy. Another Morgan and Allie pastime is quoting movies such as Bridesmaids and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Well, this letter is making for some awkward transitions because now it’s Morgan writing. Allie has pretty much summed me up in one paragraph, so I guess it’s my turn to do the same. What can I say about Allie (or Al as I like to call her)? For starters, she’s a huge Walking Dead fan, so much so that she’s convinced me to tune into the occasional episode despite never having watched one full season myself. There’s a fair amount of violence in a show that deals with the killing of zombies, or “walkers” like Al vehemently corrects me on. It comes as a surprise to me that she has such a fascination with this show because of the fact that Allie firmly believes in select Buddhist practices. In her spare time, she likes to study world religions; this studying has since influenced her daily life. I can no longer kill a spider in her presence without getting yelled at. There are Buddhist statues placed around her room as a steady reminder to me not to harm another insect.

Another thing Al enjoys doing in her free time is singing to every Lana Del Rey song that’s ever existed. She has since mastered Lana’s unique voice, and if the singer ever needed a fill-in, she should give Allie a call.

I’m sure there’s more I could say about Al, but it’s getting late, and we still have yet to edit this issue. Until the next one goes to print, thank you for reading.

Recently, the terrorist group ISIS has become prevalent in the media. They call themselves the Islamic State and have taken credit for beheading the American journalist James Foley. The group has also threatened to kill another American journalist, Steven Sotloff, if the United States does not change its presence in Iraq. The recent media buzz brings up questions of who the group really is. Where did they come from, how long have they been around, and what are the group’s goals?

Who is ISIS? ISIS is The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, but it is more commonly referred to as simply the Islamic State. The group used to be a section of Al Qaeda in Iraq. Around 2006, the United States began to break down the terrorist groups; this made terroristic acts difficult to carry out. ISIS began to reorganize and rebuild a strong following. It is hard to tell how many followers the group has, but it is upwards of 15,000 members and is still growing. The group has up to three times as many members ready to fight in a call of action.

Is ISIS a part of Al Qaeda? The ISIS group was originally a section of Al Qaeda, but in February Al- Qaeda broke ties with ISIS. Al Qaeda’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri became frustrated with the group’s refusal to carry out his orders to kill fewer Syrian civilians. It was the first time a leader of an al-Qaeda franchise had publicly disobeyed the movement's leader. ISIS is now the second major terrorist group in Iraq.

What do they want? The main goal of ISIS is to create an independent Sunni Islamic state. They are targeting the Iraqi government and the American forces in Iraq. To reach its goal, the group is using brutal violence like beheading small children and shooting large masses of people at a time. The group will stop at nothing before it reaches its end goal.

Is ISIS a threat to the United States? ISIS was only focused on the regional area of Iraq, but this has changed since prominent U.S. forces have been pushing ISIS off of the Mosul Dam. Its objections towards the U.S. are brought to light through the beheading video of American journalist, James Foley. In the video, ISIS spoke directly to President Obama, explaining that Foley’s death was due to the U.S. airstrikes. There are ISIS members all around the world, including the United States. The group is not to be taken lightly, and as a country we must take the threat of ISIS very seriously. ∆

In a bayside vs. blue-collar matchup, the San Francisco Giants will face-off against the Kansas City Royals in the World Series this year.

The two teams couldn’t be more evenly matched. Separated by just a game in the regular season (Kansas City went 89-73, while San Fran went 88-74), the two teams are both the Wild Card champions for their respective leagues, which is the first time both Wild Card winners have met in the World Series. Neither team put up big runs during the regular season, as the Giants and Royals finished 12th and 14th in the majors for runs scored, respectively.

The squads both have high-energy atmospheres in their respective clubhouses mixed with timely hitting; this makes for a killer matchup. Guys in Kansas City, like Eric Hosmer and Lorenzo Cain, will be matched up with egos like Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval.

They have plenty of differences, though. During the regular season, the Royals hit the fewest amount of home-runs in the entire league, compared to the Giants’ 17th-place finish. There are also countless intangibles that separate these teams like the invaluable, un-teachable experience that the 2012 Giants have over these young Royals, who haven’t been to the playoffs since 1985. Led by future Hall-of-Famer Bruce Bochy, San Francisco fields five position players from the 2012 championship squad, as well as Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong, who both recorded wins in that World Series. They match the Royals, who field one starter with any prior postseason experience (Omar Infante), and start seven homegrown players.

Another difference between the two squads comes on the hill. The Giants will run with a dominating four-man rotation featuring Bumgarner, Vogelsong, Tim Hudson and Jake Peavy – notably excluding former superstar Tim Lincecum. These guys consistently go deep into the game, where the Royals have relied heavily on their bullpen in the playoffs. “Big Game” James Shields has hardly lived up to his nickname, collecting just one win in three starts this postseason. Luckily, the bullpen has been un-hittable.

The sports world will learn a great deal from this series. Is it possible for the young team with timely hitting and young, energetic, homegrown talent to take down the experienced, skilled team with excellent pitching?

I think yes. The Kansas City Royals will beat the San Francisco Giants in seven games in Kansas City. Most of ESPN’s baseball experts predict this series to go six or seven games. I agree and hope it does. If one thing is certain about this World Series, we are all in for one heck of a series. ∆ Madison Bumgarner makes up the dominating four-man rotation of

the San Francisco Giants.

York City real estate has a new crown jewel: 432 Park Avenue.

Located between 56th and 57th, the building stands over the site of the former Drake Hotel, built in

1926. This 1,396 ft. tall skyscraper, about 243 men high, is the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, surpassing the Empire State

Building and One World Trade Center.

The gorgeous apartment complex features 10 x 10 ft windows, giving residents breathtaking views of the Hudson River, Central Park, the Atlantic

Ocean and more famous landmarks.

Developed under Macklowe Properties for $1.3 billion, the 104 units of the 96-story building are furnished with solid oak floors and 12.5 ft tall ceilings. Building amenities

include a private gym, restaurant, pool, spa, massage therapy room and billiards room.

While NYC living is known to be quaint, residents of 432 Park Avenue won’t have a problem with lack of space. Unit sizes range from 3,575 to 8,255 square feet. The pricing of these units begins at $16.5 million and goes as high as $95 million.

High-end property in New York City, like this residence, is a favorite among international buyers. Properties like 432 Park Avenue are hot prospects for foreign buyers looking for a safe place to put their money.

Ryan Serhant, broker with Nest Seekers International who is featured on Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing NY, says that “more than 35% of the transactions that are done in New York City are to overseas buyers” in an interview with Yahoo

Finance.

The building, a CIM Group investment, is still under construction with expected completion in 2015. However, buyers may

purchase units now. Only 12 of the 104 units are currently available. ∆

We know it’s a new season of American Horror Story when nightmares invade your Wednesday night slumber. This year’s AHS: Freak Show introduces us to characters much different than we’ve seen in past seasons. We are introduced to the bearded lady, the shortest person in the world, Lobster Boy and many more.

In true AHS fashion, we see the same faces from previous seasons. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett are just a few of the fan favorites returning.

Freak Show has all the elements to scare its audience. Twisty the clown, alone, is enough to make you cry. About six and a half feet tall, Twisty towers over his victims. His filthy clown costume, paired with a mask that covers his

rotting mouth terrifies viewers every week. As the season continues, hopefully we’ll discover more about Twisty and why he enjoys murdering people, kidnapping children and terrorizing anyone who crosses his path.

Although Freak Show portrays some scary elements, it has been off to a slow start. I’m not scared easily, but when I watched AHS Murder House and Asylum, I remember being freaked out right off the bat. The scenes, filled with screams and terror, would leave me paranoid and sleepless. It was hard to get the characters to stop appearing in my mind. This has not happened yet with Freak Show, but I am patiently waiting. Hopefully before the season ends, Twisty will pop up in one of my nightmares, letting me know that Freak Show has officially freaked me out. ∆

CHILDISH GAMBINO

CONTINUES TO IMPRESS By Christina Root

IN THE KNOW

From controversial lyrics to pulsating beats, Donald Glover’s work as Childish Gambino has gained musical notoriety while simultaneously moving him up the entertainment ladder. Though not gaining complete mainstream popularity in the rap genre, Gambino has already made a name for himself with a consistently articulate rap style. Childish Gambino does not fit the mold of a standard Atlanta-based rapper, but he continues to stun listeners and challenge the genre with the release of his new mixtape/EP combination, STN MTN/Kauai.

Last year’s release of Because the Internet was incredibly successful, partially due to the amount of rollout marketing in the form of a 70-page screenplay. However, STN MTN is relatively mellow in comparison. The low-key release of the 11-track mixtape seems to have been created without any regard for negative scrutiny. The entire album is based on Glover’s desire to stay true to his hometown Atlanta, while continuing to show respect for the city and reminiscing about his younger years. The first song off the album is incredibly deep, yet self-explanatory; "Dream / Southern Hospitality / Partna Dem" spells out Gambino’s desire to return to Atlanta and what he would do in the city if he was in charge. The mixtape is relatively casual compared to earlier projects, allowing the artistic structure to shine, particularly in songs like “Fucks Given,” “Chandler Road” and “U Don’t Have to Call.” Many of the songs combine the perfect mix of mellow and typical raw Gambino lyricism, particularly “Money Baby” and “Go DJ.”

Constantly pushing the barrier on traditional rap, Gambino has always utilized his clear talent to surprise listeners and constantly inflate his credibility. The release of Kauai helped increase excitement over the mixtape release and introduced listeners to an even more sensitive and relaxed side of Donald Glover. With hints of melodic pop and contrasting notes of beach waves, the EP becomes much more than just a marginal note. Gambino proves himself both an impressive lyricist and singer in the songs “Sober” and “Pop Thieves (Make it Feel Good).”

As Childish Gambino becomes more prevalent, his music continues to create impressive and thought-provoking remarks from not only staunch rap and hip-hop fans, and has cemented likability in the mainstream radio as well. ∆

“If I could dive into the other / like it was an ocean,” cries Elias Bender Rønnenfelt on the Iceage track “Forever,” from the Danish band’s new opus Plowing Into the Field of Love. Just for a fleeting second, Ian Curtis is resurrected. The poetic despair transmitted through Rønnenfelt’s unique moan seems like the second coming of the Joy Division front man. And for at least as long as their new album lasts, Iceage makes you believe punk, as well as post-punk, is not dead.

Although they do draw heavily from those genres, what makes this album exceptional is its expansion of influence. Iceage’s growth is most evidently shown in their song “The Lord’s Favorite.” For their previous two albums, the band focused on blistering pace, gothic ambience and an ethos of noise. Yet on this track, punk gets a bit of twang on the heels of a Texas two-step bass line. “I do believe in heaven and I do believe it’s real,” proselytizes Rønnenfelt like a true God-fearing cowboy. And what’s more punk than that?

Even on “Forever,” their traditional post-punk anguish is reborn through the boisterous horn section included in the last stretches of the song. Rønnenfelt channels his inner Nick Cave while groaning over the shrieking guitar sound. Even a violin finds its way onto the track, though it’s ultimately distorted in the wake of the commanding drums. The swelling of each instrument on the calamitous finale is astounding.

Besides similarities in front men and genre, Iceage shares something else with Joy Division. In between Unknown Pleasures and Closer, Joy Division realized that the straightforward desperation of their first album could be amplified by making use of emptiness and non-traditional instruments. In the same way, Iceage has grown and become even more punk on Plowing Into the Field of Love. What results is one of the best albums of the year so far. ∆

WEEZER IS BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM By Sean LynchThough Weezer has been in limbo for the past couple of years, the band

members get back to their roots with their new album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End. It’s the first time since 2001 that the band has worked with Ric Ocasek as a producer. He is known for helping Weezer get their start with the critically acclaimed Blue Album.

The first single “Back To Shack” provides all of the ingredients for a classic Weezer song, including powerful guitar riffs and a catchy hook. The second single “Cleopatra” starts off as a very light song, but it soon

becomes heavier with the change from acoustic to electric guitar over the course of the song. Other tracks that are worth listening to include “DaVinci” and “The British Are Coming” because they go along the same path of that classic Weezer sound. The album provides fans with a traditional-sounding pop/rock album, which is something that Weezer fans have been waiting for since Hurley came out in 2010. Everything Will Be Alright In The End is definitely something that older fans will enjoy while also giving the younger generation a chance to hear the vintage Weezer sound. ∆

LITTLE MACHINES: A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

IN ELECTRO-POPBy Nina LaPres

Out of all the singer-songwriters that have come out of Canada over the years, Toronto’s electropop star, Lights, has stolen the hearts of many in both her home country and the U.S. Since her last album, Siberia, was released in 2011, Lights (Valerie Anne Poxleitner) has married Blessthefall frontman Beau Bokan and become a mom to daughter Rocket earlier this year.

When I heard that Lights was releasing an album right after becoming a mother, I was hesitant to listen. A maturing artist can result in a desperate attempt to stay young (take Avril Lavigne’s laughably immature transition in both music and adulthood, for example). Thankfully, Lights proved me wrong by not only staying the same both musically and personally, but also by making her new album Little Machines her best album to date.

The easiest way to describe this album is as an electric ray of sunshine. Whenever you’re having the worst day, listen to her upbeat tunes like “Up We Go,” “Meteorites,” and “Same Sea.” Your head will be in the clouds.

If I had to recommend this album, I would recommend buying the Deluxe Version on iTunes, simply because the songs on Little Machines are great, but the bonus tracks are even better. “From All Sides” and “Lucky Ones” are tracks to pay attention to. This album took me by surprise in terms of Lights’ creativity. There is a combination of her old and new musical traits. Little Machines is proof not only that Lights is maturing beautifully in life and in music, but that she truly is a force to be reckoned with. ∆

“If it’s a quiet night out at the beach and your ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story… ” opens up the trailer to the new Paul Thomas Anderson thriller, Inherent Vice. Even in the beginning seconds, there seems to be something different with the aesthetic compared to other Anderson movies, raising the enthusiasm for its release. Usually focusing on darker, more serious stories, this new effort seems to be a mix of comedy, drama, action and period epic.

Anticipation is already high for the film directed by, what Rolling Stone labelled, the “foremost filmmaking talent of his generation.” It’s the first adapted screenplay of the works of acclaimed author Thomas Pynchon, based on his novel of the same name. The movie features a story about a private eye who gets caught up in the affairs of his “ex-old lady” and her plans to kidnap her billionaire boyfriend. The plot gets murkier and pretty trippy, set against a backdrop of the late 1960s, where the psychedelic freedom of the previous decade transforms into societal neurosis and paranoia.

As with any Anderson cast, there are accustomed actors as well as fresh faces. Joaquin Phoenix reprises his title of lead character after earning a “Best Leading Actor” nomination for the latest Anderson flick, The Master. Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro make their Anderson film debuts, and they bring both talent and experience to the mix. For music fans, Inherent Vice marks the acting debut of the remarkable musician Joanna Newsom and her unique vocalizations. Aside from acting, Newsom also narrates the trailer, adding her innocent voice to the reeling plot summary.

There is more than one famous musician tied to the film as well. Johnny Greenwood is tabbed to create the soundtrack; this marks the third straight Anderson movie the Radiohead guitarist has worked on. Greenwood has revealed that he will debut a new Radiohead track through the soundtrack, called “Spooks.” The song, which the band has performed live, contains a surf-rock tremolo riff that fits perfectly with the main character, who is a manifestation of the druggie-surfer culture, an even more burned out Spicoli.

The movie, which premiered at the New York Film Festival, is set to be theatrically released on December 12, “coming just in time for Christmas.” Look for a blend of classic Anderson characteristics along with crisp new actors and storylines to keep the movie fresh and focused. ∆

ANTICIPATION HEIGHTENS FOR INHERENT VICE

By Daniel Leopold

9Oct. 2014 wsbufm.net

“D on’t get into the habit of watching television every night,” my University 101 teacher said a few years back.

For the most part, I’ve taken her advice seriously. I’ve cut back on my favorite shows, steered away from movies on the weekends and even stopped setting alarms on my phone for live premieres.

However, two of the nine months that classes are in session must be taken as exceptions - October and December. Luckily, October is at last upon us. Put down your textbooks, stay up later and make a bowl of popcorn for you and your pals.

Cable TV is jam-packed with spooktacular hits every night from mid-October until Halloween. Tons of channels air Halloween specials, but two stations’ lineups seem to dominate popular choices among viewers.

These lineups are ABC’s 13 Nights of

Halloween and AMC’s FearFest. The 13 Nights of Halloween started haunting

our living rooms in 1988. ABC Family, which was Fox Family at the time, developed their first Halloween lineup two years after the 25 Days of Christmas began. Since both programs piled in millions of viewers each night, the company has been running them during both holiday seasons.

As you may have guessed based on the name of the station, the 13 Nights appeals to family audiences. ABC calls it a “scarefest,” but many would argue that the lineup isn’t exactly nightmare-provoking. From Sunday, October 19, until Halloween Day viewers can catch classics like The Addams Family and Beetlejuice or a Halloween episode of his/her favorite TV show.

Also, the lineup does seem to have more diversity than the 13 Nights has had in years past. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, but it’s refreshing to know that I won’t turn on my TV in October and find a Harry Potter marathon airing twice a week.

The 13 Nights’ biggest competitor, Fearfest, appears to be a few steps ahead of the game

when it comes to film diversity. This is no coincidence. In fact, in 1997 AMC had a “Monsterfest” blog that posted about horror films and gathered the productions people found most appealing during the month of October. However, it wasn’t until 2008 that AMC officially came out with FearFest. Like the 13 Nights, it’s been a success since it started.

FearFest is sticking with its vintage horror film roots this season with airings of classics from Stephen King, Tim Burton and more!

Another fun fact about FearFest is that they’ve decided to show movie series in order, each taking up their own night. For example, on Halloween, the Halloween movie series will be playing in order, all day long – clever right?

If you’re debating which lineup fits your eerie, frightful, jittery, creepy or (my personal favorite) spooktacular mood, you can flip to either AMC or ABC Family. Both lineups will do the trick in getting you into the Halloween spirit. So, grab a blanket and ghostly snacks and enjoy a night of your Halloween favorites.

HALLOWEEN TV: BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER JACKIE ROBERTS

10 Oct. 2014 The Buzzworthy

Halloween is quickly approaching, and for those of you heading to parties, these are some

of what the most popular costumes will be this year. You can either stay on trend with popular culture

or avoid wearing the same costume as somebody else.

Popular costumes are often dictated by blockbuster movies that came out in the past year. Therefore, superhero costumes are

going to be in, especially those related to Guardians of the Galaxy and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Frozen costumes will also be popular,

especially Elsa.

Dressing for the decades will also be a popular trend this Halloween, and I find that these costumes are the easiest to make from items in your closet or at the thrift

store. Go for a look worthy of The Great Gatsby with a flapper-inspired look. Guys can easily channel the ‘50s by going for a James Dean look with jeans, a white T-shirt,

a jacket and slicked hair, or girls can choose a poodle skirt. In fashion, the ‘90s are a major source of inspiration for this fall. For Halloween, try going grunge

with a big flannel or band T-shirt, baggy jeans and a pair of old Converse.

For couples’ costumes, humor and creativity are key. Party City listed combinations like mustard and hot dog and peanut butter and jelly

for this year, but going as celebrities could also be fun (I love the idea of replicating Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s all-

denim outfits from the 2001 American Music Awards).

Whether you choose a trending costume or think of something unique, have fun this Halloween by

creating an amazing ensemble!

It’s the night before Halloween, and you still don’t have anything to wear. Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered with our list of fun, easy and affordable Halloween costumes that are probably already in your closet.

COSTUMES ON A BUDGETMaggie Kovacs and Madeleine Faircloth

Land ho! This nifty sailor-hat was only five dol-lars and is basically a costume in itself. Pair it with a classic, striped shirt and ordinary cardi-gan to make it totally nautical. Don’t forget your boat shoes for a no-slip-grip on the slippery deck.

SAILORGREASER

Step aside Pink Ladies; the Greasers have arrived. Complete with their leather jackets, chucks and stud shades, they are not just the life of the party. They are the party. For a more feminine touch, add some ruby-red lip-stick and a bow to match. This is the perfect, easy group cos-tume or last-minute solo outfit.

HOBO

It’s not the prettiest, but it sure is easy for you lazy guys and gals. Put that mud on the ground to use by rubbing some on your face, doubling it as a facial and costume make-up. Make a sign out of cardboard with a funny saying. Fi-nally, throw on your pajamas from last night.

90’S PROBLEM CHILD

Nothing is scarier than a problem child. Just ask your parents. This su-per-easy costume is 90’s with a twist. Make-up wise, be as generous with the eyeliner as possible. We’re talk-ing nonvisible-eyelids generous. This poppin’ popcorn shirt was found at a convenience store for only 99 cents. Make a choker necklace of black rib-bon. Throw on any black leggings and black boots to complete the cos-tume. Bonus points for extra greasy side parts you can't see through.

Halloween Lights: Similar to Christmas lights, these little lumi-

nescent bulbs of green, orange, and purple are great for lighting up the room. The best thing

about these lights is that they're flexible and can be strung anywhere, the ceiling, around a bulletin board, or even around exposed pipes. No matter where you put them, these colorful decorations

will put some more Halloween color in your life this season.

Bow Candy Bowl: This is an easy one to make and

is perfect for Halloween because, HELLO, candy! This glass orb

bowl and orange ribbon cost $2, and all you have to do is tie the ribbon around the bowl. Fill it with your

favorite candy such as candy corn or candy pumpkins. Caution Tape:

Who could forget this Halloween favorite that’s only $1 at Walmart? You can never go wrong with this

yellow caution tape that looks straight from a crime scene What's

scarier than that? So, raid your local Walmarts and

Dollar Trees, and remember to have fun with your Halloween decor.

There are so many things you can do with what is available and at such

low costs.

Pumpkins: These are a Halloween staple. There are

pumpkin patches and pumpkin stands all over the place, and it's almost like a contest to find the perfect pumpkin for the best price. Either left un-carved or turned into jolly jack-o-lan-terns, these orange fall favorites are a perfect

accent for Halloween decor.

It's that time of the year again! Yes, the leaves are starting to change, the tall boots and leggings are coming out and the Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back at Starbucks. THE LOOK

Pull Off This Season’s

“Girly-Grunge” Like it or not, the 90s are back. Grunge is, once again, the top fashion style in all its garage-

rock glory. Fear not, you don’t need to stop bathing to make this trend cute and effective. If anything, the new grunge of our decade calls for a more polished version, dubbed “girly-grunge.” The look today, throws different patterns together for a comfortable street-style. Get some of the essentials, add your own flair and you’ll be rocking this look in no time.

Flannel (left): The staple of any grunge outfit is the flannel shirt. Wear a flannel over a graphic-tee or throw one around your waist.

By Allison Plante

Leather (above): Boots, jack-ets and even leggings. Leather is everywhere, and it’s easy to mix into any outfit. A leather jacket will keep you warm when going out during a chilly Bonaventure evening.

Oversized Sweaters: You can wear your boyfriend’s hoodie over leggings, add an infinity scarf and call it fashion.

Light-washed denim: Did you know they make light-washed jeg-gings now? Light-washed denim gives a more street-casual look than its dressier dark-wash cousin.Slouchy beanies: These beanies are

adorable and give you the grunge style in an instant. Plus, they match with almost anything.

TELEVISION

With critical darlings like Mad Men and Breaking Bad under its belt, it may come as a surprise to many that AMC’s most chart-topping cable series is the zombie-apocalypse drama, The Walking Dead. In its Season 5 premiere on October 12, the comic-based show shattered cable records when it reeled in 17.5 million views, 11 million of those viewers falling into the coveted 18-49 age group. And if you tuned into the terrifying Season 4 finale, these high numbers should come as no surprise.

One thing that The Walking Dead has perfected in order to reel their view-ers in is its fetish for nail-biting suspense. In the Season 4 finale, Officer Rick Grimes and his group of survivors found themselves trapped in the town of Terminus run by cutthroat men and women whose main means of sur-vival is to feast on the flesh of other wandering survivors. Though the events that unraveled in the season premiere seemed to be predictably optimis-tic for our protagonists, there is no doubt that things will soon take a turn for the worse, for Rick’s group possibly facing their most fearful opponents yet.

If the first episode of Season 5 seemed to bring faith in humanity back to the group as they reunited with their lost members, the next week’s episode, entitled “Strangers,” turned the season’s main focus from the goodness of our protagonists to the horrific acts made not by the emotionless “walkers,” but by the inhumane survivors that this dystopian world turned into mon-sters. They are monsters far worse than those who caused the apocalypse.

During the duration of The Walking Dead’s five-season run, the show has fre-quently explored the motifs of what constitutes as good and evil in addition to what is logical and inhumane. We see these motifs through the war-mongering relationships between Rick and his fellow survivors and through his decision to join them or destroy them. One of the most gripping arcs in the show’s his-tory explored this theme through Rick’s rivalry with David Morrissey’s power-hungry antagonist The Governor. His town Woodbury, though bloodthirsty, had formed the closest thing to a normal society that the show has ever seen.

Another trait that captivates and devastates every fan is the show’s constant use of leading character deaths. As a show set during the zombie apocalypse, it should come as no surprise that some of the most beloved characters could die at any minute, either from the bite of a walker or from the wound of a rival survivor. But these lead characters, such as fan-favorite Daryl Dixon and scene-stealing femme-fatale Michonne, enable the show to find ways for the viewers to become deeply attached to them. The more than possible thought of these characters’ deaths are both shocking and devastating. Thus, the show successfully lands its viewers into its world, questioning what’s considered right and wrong since the only mo-tives for every survivor is what they must do to make it through another day.

Only three episodes in, Season 5 of The Walking Dead is proving to be the most disturbing and the most suspenseful season to date. If the horrific events shown to the viewers in these few episodes are any indication of what to ex-pect for the rest of the season, it may bring up a question that nobody wants to face when disaster strikes. Can we keep our morals and create a sense of normalcy? Or, it may just be inevitable that we become emotionless and cru-el to our fellow man if events lead to survival during a zombie-apocalypse. ∆

Cosmic events this month will bring your trademark individuality front and center, putting your name on everyone’s lips. Get ready for your big guitar solo, Aries—and make sure you look every inch the rock star. Self-expression is high on the October agenda. Whether you’ve just got something to get off your chest, or you’re planting the seeds of a personal revolution, the cosmic megaphone is firmly in your hands. What have you got to tell the world, Aries? Go ahead and share.

ARIES MARCH 21-APRIL 20

Dive in to your life and organize! You’re revved up to start your fall fitness routine, or to turbo-clean a cluttered area of your home and office. Streamlining is the name of your game—and you’ll be grateful for any system you CAN keep in place, as the cosmos do a little freestyle dancing this month (more on that in a minute). Ah, Taurus, even the best-laid plans can be foiled in October, but there’s no shame in making your best attempt to get life back on track.

TAURUS APRIL 21-MAY 21Let’s have some fun, shall we, Gemini? The Sun bounds through Libra—your fifth house of passion, play and fearless expression. The fifth house rules romance, so a visit from Cupid—or the stork—could even arrive this month. While there are a few cosmic speed bumps in the forecast, the bold Sun can help you take them in stride—or at least, turn them into raw material for your next performance piece. Nobody can tell colorful stories quite like a Gemini, and with the Sun in this theatrical zone of your chart, you’ll regale a rapt crowd—perhaps attracting a few admirers while you hold court.

GEMINI MAY 22-JUNE 20

Let’s get cozy, Cancer! Since your sign is the natural ruler of this zodiac sector, you’ll be in your element, ready to spruce your domain to welcome the fall season. Swap some of your home accents, adding new printed pillows, a richly textured ottoman or a cozy cashmere throw. Try muted hues like navy and olive green for an interesting twist on “neutral,” set off with cheery pops of color to lift your mood as the temperatures start to drop.

CANCER JUNE 21-JULLY 22

You've got something to say, Leo—actually, a lot! You're in the mood to mix and mingle, and to share all the brilliant ideas you've got percolating with synergistic people. You could find yourself dashing between meetings and social engagements, with a full dance card and lots of multitasking to do. While this might exhaust other zodiac signs, it's a pace that your go-getter sign thrives on. So take advantage—say yes to after-work cocktails, a breakfast presenta-tion, a lunchtime power yoga class with a colleague or friend. You'll find a way to squeeze it all in! You could get involved in local affairs or just start explor-ing cultural offerings in your own backyard.

LEO JULY 23-AUG. 22

Lean in, Virgo. The Sun is in Libra, your second house of work, money and security. Now that birth-day season is behind you, it's time to follow your signmate Sheryl Sandberg's advice and hunker down with your goals and priorities. Not that YOU need an excuse to go into "executive planner" mode, Virgo! So go ahead and don that project manager chapeau as you get your finances and affairs in order. October is the perfect month to prioritize.

VIRGO AUG. 23-SEPT. 22

Welcome to Libra season! The Sun and your ruler, charming Venus, are both in Libra, adding some extra sparkle to everything you do. While your sign rules all things interpersonal, during this time of year, you might scale back on the dynamic duos and focus on Numero Uno. What do you want for the coming year of your life? With a birthday either just behind you or right around the corner, it's the perfect time to reflect on your hopes, wishes and personal trajectory.

LIBRA SEPT 23-OCT. 22Relax, recline and release that tension. If you've got any grand plans or debuts, you might want to save them until later this month, or even for November—and use the time until then to tie up loose ends. The twelfth house is the zodiac's final segment, and it's associated with endings, closure and healing. Think of this as your annual season to complete those lingering obligations so you can enjoy a clear slate in time for your birthday.

SCORPIO OCT. 23-NOV. 21

Spread your wings! This is collaboration season for you, social Sagittarius, a chance to delve into lofty ideas, visionary alliances and other world-changing pursuits that your expansive sign adores. A natural community organizer of sorts, you'll love playing super-connector with your tribe, matching up people and sparking synergies. In fact, these two Forbes-identified habits of the world's best networkers—ex-treme giving and consistent introductions—come naturally to the affable, generous Sag. While you're at it, ask for a few introductions, too—or head out to meet some interesting, like-minded people.

SAGITTARIUS NOV. 22-DEC. 21

Ask, believe…achieve? This month, set your sights on a lofty goal, and don't let it out of your crosshairs. The Sun spends its first three weeks of October in Libra, your tenth house of success and professional endeavors. As the natural ruler of the zodiac's tenth house, you feel right at home when you're striving toward a big end game, taking deliberate steps and marking your progress along the way.

CAPRICORNDEC. 22-JAN. 19 Ready for liftoff! Or…are you? October's stars

call forth your expansive spirit, with the Sun and dazzling Venus both in your ninth house of travel, adventure and new horizons. However, there are other planetary players scrambling signals. So as much as you may want to lift the wheels, you might not get the all-clear signal from the astrological air traffic control towers. The best use of your precious energy this month? Plot your trajectory, make big plans, but wait to implement some of them (if you can) until the end of October.

AQUARIUS JAN. 20-FEB. 18

Swim into the depths, Fish, as intimate and profound waters beckon you this month. The Sun and mag-netic Venus spend the first three weeks of October in Libra, your eighth house of intensity, privacy and merging. You’re in the mood to tighten your circle, letting in only the people you unequivocally trust. And this is not a bad thing, Pisces—not at all. Let’s face it, with your compassionate personality, some shady characters can slither into your orbit. Now is the time to purge those unsavory types from your sphere. You don’t have time for their drama!
