HECTOR BIZERK SUPPORT FROM THE ILL COLLECTIVEFormed by drummer/producer Audrey Tait and Scottish battle rap champion Louie, Hector Bizerk have an insatiable desire to experiment with noise, colour, rhythm and rhyme. Their live show is a crescendo of thought-provoking music that includes elements of live visual art, b-boying and improvisation. Hector Bizerk is a celebration of modern hip hop culture with a Scottish twist, combining frontman Louie’s razor sharp poetry with incredible tribal rhythms and grooving funk basslines that encapsulates audiences.

ALKANES, EMILIO LARGO & COLD YEARSFollowing the split of his old band Purple Divide, Guitarist/Vocalist Dale Sutherland looked to challenge himself with a new project. After experimenting with his song writing, Dale set his sights on a sound heavier than Purple Divide. With a focus on big dynamic riffs and drawing influence from bands such as Arcane Roots, Biffy Clyro, Muse, Oceansize and Marmozets, the sound of Alkanes began to develop.

MIN DIESELHJEARTS & WENDELL BORTONMin Diesel are a guitar-led three-piece from the North-east of Scotland, who shamelessly plunder the best bits from their favourite late-80s/early-90s punk, lo-fi and math-rock bands’ to create music they’ve taken great amusement from dubbing “min-die rock”. Min Diesel have shared a stage with Errors, Acoustic Ladyland, Joan of Arc, Hot Club de Paris, Sky Larkin and Paws.

PRONTO MAMA ALPHAS & THE HARMONICA MOVEMENTPronto Mama are a past post-modern bug-eyed beatnik group from Glasgow who are just as confused as anyone else. They are soulful. They believe irreverent wordplay, clean musicianship and a dirty dedication to song-writing is how you do it. The music is built around the songs written by Marc Rooney and Ciaran McEneny, who in coughing copy-cat fashion opted for McEneny/Rooney. Keeping it alphabetical preserves good feeling and the over-arching idea you have of yourself, maybe.

BILLY BRAGGOrator, entertainer, rabble-rouser, negotiator, pamphleteer, the fabled ‘big-nosed bard from Barking’, Billy Bragg is many things. A regular contributor to the national debate as TV pundit and newspaper columnist, he continues to sharpen his pen as a writer and songwriter. Whether it’s unionized workers, constitutional reform, bankers’ bonuses, illegal wars or the undemocratic commandeering of a portable toilet backstage at a festival, Billy Bragg will help fight your corner.

COCKNEY REJECTSCockney Rejects were formed in the late seventies in East London as an answer to the art school punk that had dominated the scene up until then. Fiercely working class in stance and attitude, the band shunned the political ramblings of punk’s first wave and sang about the circumstances that surrounded them. Spotted by Sham 69’s Jimmy Pursey and signed by EMI after playing four local gigs they found themselves playing sell out tours the length and breadth of the UK.

ALABAMA 3Alabama 3 is a pop band, a punk rock, blues and country techno situationist crypto-Marxist-Leninist electro band. We never went on X Factor or Pop Idol or Stooge Quest. We did it the old fashioned way; Back in 1996, we threw a big old party, invited all our friends. Geffen records bought it..! for a million dollars! We never needed a self-appointed quango of jaded vampires to tell us how to sing the blues...we got MOJO. We have the power to raise the dead.

TREACHEROUS ORCHESTRATreacherous Orchestra are a powerful force in Scottish music; a huge eleven strong, folk big band that delivers epic, incendiary live performances night after night. On stage the players are hugely entertaining, mixing their original tunes up with theatrical anarchic rock attitude. Here is a band that is playing at the next level, technical, impressive and yet impossibly raw, whose shows are always vital and make the audience feel truly alive and in the moment.

THE HIGH KINGSFor centuries, Ireland was ruled by High Kings. As their reign came to an end, their deeds and stories merged into the world of legend and myth and the High Kings of Ireland were no more except in story, music and song. The High Kings are continuing to live up to their reputation as a phenomenal live band, serving up laughter, good times and even the odd sing along.

PAUL JONES & DAVE KELLYThese long standing co-vocalists with The Blues Band get a big buzz out of taking things down a level, simplifying the music a little, and plying their trade as a duo, thus imbuing their very own personal and individual approaches to a dynamic, rootsy and exhilarating set of Country Blues. Venues large and small have been hushed and then enraptured by the sense of ‘old times’ in the Mississippi Delta.

:NEW VOICES: :NEW TALENT: :NEW THEATRE:The theme for Aberdeen Performing Arts’ new work strand is Northern Lights with an emphasis on astronomy and the stars. For our Lemon Tree Christmas show this year A Ladder to the Stars (see p. 35) we’ve teamed up with Scottish theatre company Visible Fictions who’ve been creating theatre for young people for nearly 25 years. Our popular A Play, A Pie and A Pint season includes a co-commission with the city’s Sound Festival - The Wakeful Chamber - based on the life of Aberdeen’s Royal Astronomer Sir David Gill. Aberdeen Performing Arts’ Senior Youth Theatre are performing a rehearsed reading of Lynsey Murdoch’s Escape Seed and you can share your dreams of stardom through our Stars In Their Eyes Scratch Night.

Escape Seedby Lynsey MurdochA comet is coming: the drama of the cosmos and the city streets entwine in Escape Speed, a play created in consultation with the Astronomer Royal for Scotland. Escape Seed follows the fate of Emma, a tough teen with a secret and her bumbling, gang-heavy classmate Kai. When their paths collide on one eventful night, their earth-bound universe is changed forever.

NORTHERN LIGHTS In partnership with sound, one of the autumn season of A Play, A Pie & A Pints is a co-commission with the 2015 festival that unites the talents of writer Rebecca Sharp and composer Pippa Murphy. Between them they’ve created a brand new piece of theatre and original musical score.

Tuesday 20 - Saturday 24 October Tue-Fri 6pm, Thu & Sat 1pmA sound Festival, Aberdeen Performing Arts and Òran Mór - A Play, A Pie & A Pint co-commission

The Wakeful ChamberWritten by: Rebecca Sharp Music composed by: Pippa Murphy A woman’s chronic somniphobia (fear of sleep) leads her to develop an elaborate system of rituals in order to survive the hours of night – measuring time, light, distances, stars – until day breaks and the world around her wakes up. Inspired by the work of Aberdeen’s Royal Astronomer Sir David Gill, alchemy, fantasy and bats, The Wakeful Chamber explores what happens to our sensory perception when familiar routines are under threat.

Youth Arts Collective North East is made up of youth, arts and community organisations from across Aberdeen city and shire. We are creating opportunities for young people aged 0-25 to shape and participate in the arts and to find, explore and develop their creative potential.

We’ll be offering opportunities for young people to explore the arts as a career path, to get involved as young directors, actors, dancers and artists. We’ll be trying to find the next generation of the world’s theatre technicians, filmmakers and young journalists interested in dance, theatre, music and art.

But to start with, we want to ask you what you’d like to see us working on. Young people are at the heart of what we do, and so it makes sense for us to ask what you need first.

Collective Noun uk/k’lek.tiv/ us -“A group of entities that share or are motivated by at least one common issue or interest, or work together to achieve a common objective.”

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU GETTING INVOLVED IN YOUTH ARTS VERY SOON
