Budding Authors
We will be looking closely at many great books in order to enhance our writing. Keep an eye out for topic specific ideas that you can do at home to help enhance your child's writing.
Mathematics
• Multiplication / Division• Addition / Subtraction• Fractions• Measurement• Geometry• Algebra• Data analysis
Fact Fluency
• Fluency of math facts, a critical factor for success in higher level mathematics, has been proven ineffective without strategy instruction (both in research and our own experience) and limits students to only the facts that they memorized. (example: 14x6 is not learned, but if students think flexibly, which is one of our goals, students can decompose the problem into the basic facts of 10x6 + 4x6. This also teaches the distributive property, which is a critical component of success in algebra and beyond)
Problem Solvers
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Check to see if the strategy are calculations are correct.
Use math vocabulary
and labels.
Using math symbols and numbers to solve problems in real life.
Make sense of a problem and persevere in solving them.
Think about the math in the problem and come up with a number sentence.
Using math tools, pictures, drawings, and objects to solve the problem.

StandardizedTesting
• At this time the state has not decided if the children will be taking the MCAS or the PARCC test. We will keep you updated.
Foxborough Elementary Schools will be using trimesters this year. We have a new report card. I encourage you to attend the parent night on October 7th.
Healthy Snack Choices
Research has shown that healthy snacks will give your child the energy and focus they need for learning.
Also, your child will have about 10 minutes to eat his or her snack.
AllergiesPlease remember that we have a peanut and tree nut safe classroom. Please be careful about reading labels it frees me up to do our class read aloud each day during snack time.
HOMEWORK POLICY Purpose of Homework
Homework is meant to be an extension of your child’s learning. Consequently, children should be able to get at least 70% of a homework assignment correct working independently. Homework is designed for students to: practice, apply and strengthen concepts introduced in the classroom, participate in research activities, to locate facts and data using traditional and technological tools, develop good work habits, gain confidence in preparing for tests and classroom participation, develop independent study skills, complete short and long-term projects. Guidelines for HomeworkHomework assignments are based on the skills and concepts the learner needs to review, practice, apply, and expand. Students learn to value the importance of homework during the primary grade years. The support and guidance provided by parents can influence the students’ attitude toward homework, meeting deadlines and the product quality. Communication among students, parents and staff is essential to success in completing high quality homework assignments. Each teacher determines the content and quantity of homework assignments with the following guidelines:
Reading Homework (total time including reading)
15-20 minutes 30-45 minutes
Homework may be requested for a sick child on the THIRD day the child is out of school. The parent may pick up the homework in the school office at the end of the school day. It is expected that work sent home will be completed and returned to school with the child. Teachers are not responsible for sending work home that is missed due to vacations or unexcused absences.
The purpose of 3rd grade homework is to practice reading nightly (15 – 20 minutes) and practice math fact fluency nightly (15 – 20 minutes). While still having time to be a kid to foster social interactions through sports, activities, and fun.
