Why is it important to conserve and protect the Yela Ka Forest & Watershed?

Area of Biological Significances Last intact watershed in Kosrae Ka (Terminalia carolinensis) is endemic to FSM Healthy watershed nourishes and protects feeding and spawning areas, marine animals, and habitats Largest, longest, and straightest mangroves are found in Yela One of the best fishing ground for community

What’s happening that effects the Yela natural biodiversity and the community?

Road & other infrastructural development-Contributes more on sedimentation that eventually degrades the coral reefs

Logging/Wood harvesting-Habitat degradation

What to accomplish? (Conservation Results)

By end of 2016, there will be at least 20% decrease in sedimentation level at the Yela Watershed through;

a) Increasing natural vegetation covers to control soil erosion;

b) Full compliance with EIA regulations to limit sedimentation production;
