Here is a selection of some of the questions we are frequently asked by students on our Adult Total Immersion Courses. If you don’t find the answer to your question here, please contact us at [email protected] and we will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Irish time is one hour behind CET (Central European Time).

Young Adults (17 to 19) should fly into Dublin airport where you will be met by a representative of The Language Place and accompanied to Dundalk. For Adults it is best to fly into Dublin airport as it is the nearest airport to Dundalk. However, you can also fly into Belfast, which has two airports, Belfast City and Belfast International, but you will have to pay additional transfer expenses.

You can fly into Dublin from many European airports with Aer Lingus (www.aerlingus.ie ), Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) or your country’s national airline.

The journey time from Dublin Airport to Dundalk is approximately 1 hour (70km). Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport to Dundalk is about 90 minutes.

Young Adults (17-19) will be met at the airport by a representative of The Language Place and taken to The Language Place. The cost of this transfer is €50. Adults usually take a public bus from Dublin airport to Dundalk where a representative of The Language Place will meet you at the bus station. There is a bus from the airport to Dundalk every hour and it costs €8 during the day. If you prefer, a representative of The Language Place can also meet you at the airport and take you directly to The Language Place but you will have to pay additional transfer fees of €50.

Young Adults (17-19) stay with a host family in full board accommodation in Dundalk. Adults on our Adult Total Immersion programme usually stay with a host person / host family because this is the best way to improve your English quickly and to get to know Irish culture. It is also a very economical option. Adults can also choose to stay in a self-catering apartment or rent a house in Dundalk. On Saturdays, you will stay in a Bed & Breakfast or hotel in Dublin (Week 1), Galway (Week 2), Kilkenny (Week 3) and Cork (Week 4).

All our hosts/host families are carefully chosen after a long interview process. We visit the families at their home and collect information about the family members’ ages, occupations, language skills, interests and hobbies, pets etc. The information you give us on your Application Form helps us to match you with a host person/host family that is best for you. adult total immersion: frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between Ireland and western Europe?

Where should I fly to?

Who should I fly with?

How long does it take to get from Dublin/Belfast to Dundalk?

Who will meet me at the airport?

Where will I stay?

do not usually have small children. All hosts/host families live in very comfortable houses in Dundalk or Blackrock.

Yes. All our students will have their own bedroom.

Usually, yes. Friends who stay with the same host person/host family usually share a bathroom.

Irish people usually have breakfast between 7.00 and 10.00, lunch between 12.00 and 14.00 and dinner between 17.30 and 19.30. Breakfast and dinner are the main meals of the day. It is important to know that lunch tends to be lighter than in Europe

Your host/host family will make you breakfast each morning and dinner each evening except on weekend excursions. On the days when you have an organised activity or day excursion, your host/host family will provide you with a packed lunch. A packed lunch is usually a sandwich, a salad, yoghurt, cheese and some fruit. Your host/host family will buy all the food you will need for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will also provide snacks between meals. All meals on organised weekend trips with The Language Place are also included in the Adult Total Immersion course price. Coffees and additional drinks are not included.

Irish food is a lot more varied than it was in the past but, obviously, national diets vary from country to country, as do the methods of cooking. If you a problem with the variety of food in your host house, mention it politely to your host person/host family.

It’s good to remember that Ireland is a different country, with different ways of preparing food and typical dishes in Ireland will be different from dishes in your home country - this is part of the adventure of really experiencing another culture. Before you come to Ireland you will fill in a very detailed likes and dislikes section on your Application Form. You can tell the host person/host family what you like, what you don’t eat, etc. You can eat as little or as much as you like. The host person/host family will not expect you to like absolutely everything. If you do not like something the host person/host family prepares, the best thing is to tell them. You can also use the host family kitchen to prepare some of your own meals if you want. If you like cooking, your host family would enjoy tasting dishes from your country too.

If you forgot to mention anything on your Application Form, tell your host person/host family when you arrive.

Will I have my own bedroom?

What are the mealtimes in Ireland?

Will I have my own bathroom?

What happens if I do not like the food my host/host family cooks?

What meals will I have with my host/host family?

A friend went to Ireland and didn’t like the food. Is Irish food bad?

I forgot to mention in my questionnaire that I don’t like milk? What should I do?

If you are staying with a host/host family, they will buy all the food you need for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will also provide snacks between meals. While on excursions to Dublin, Galway, Belfast and Cork you will eat away from your host house. These meals are included in the cost of your course but extra drinks and snacks are not included in the price. If you are staying in an apartment or house, your food/meals are not included in the price of your course and you will have to buy your own food to prepare your meals. Students staying in apartments also have to pay for their own meals while on excursions with The Language Place.

There is a section on your student Application Form that deals with food restrictions and allergies. We will make sure your host person/host family knows about these before you arrive.

Most of our hosts/host families live within 5-30 minutes’ walk of The Language Place. Your host will usually take you to the centre of town by car and The Language Place also offers a free transport service to and from your accommodation. The self-catering apartments are also very near to The Language Place.

Yes, your host/host family will wash your clothes with their own laundry.

Most Irish homes have broadband and wi-fi. In any case The Language Place offers free internet access to all our students in our study centre. You can also bring your own laptop or ipad.

No, you will have your own key.

The hosts/host families do not expect a present and this is entirely up to you. But if you would like to bring a small present but you are not sure what to bring, something cultural from your own country is always a good choice.

Our host families are committed to helping you improve your communication skills and are kind and patient. If you have a low or basic level of English (A2 level) do not expect to understand everything on the first day! During your Intensive English Language Course you will learn how to communicate better and you will feel more confident every day. The Language Place team want you to enjoy your English learning experience in Ireland and we are here to help you in whatever way we can. So don’t worry!

What food and drink do I need to buy for myself?

I’m allergic to dairy products/cats…. How will my host/host family know?

Will my host/host family wash my clothes?

Will my host/host family have broadband/wi-fi?

I’m worried that I won’t understand my host/host family or they won’t understand me.

How will I get from my host/host family’s house to The Language Place?

I don’t like going to sleep too early. Will this be a problem for my host/host family?

Should I bring my host person/host family a present?

If you wish to stay for any extra nights before your course starts, or after it finishes, then please let us know in advance (before arrival) so that we can make the necessary arrangements with the host person /host family. Extra nights cost €35 per night.

No. You do not have to do all the activities or excursions. Please let us know if you do not want to do anything in particular. Adults can also choose our Just Study option (classes and accommodation) and choose the activities and excursions they want to do. For more information and a price-list of all activities and excursions: [email protected]

All clases are especially designed to cover the needs of our students. You will spend 4 hours a day in class working on your speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. You will also benefit from many indirect classes through our progamme of activities, trips and excursions with your teachers.

In accordance with the objectives of our Total Immersion programme, we make sure our students have maximum opportunities to learn and practise English all day. Students will be free most evenings from 18.00 or 19.30. You can choose to practise the English you have learned during the day with your host person/host family but you can also relax, study, do sport etc.

The weather in Ireland is changeable (between 12° and 24°) in summer. August is the start of autumn in Ireland so we have sunny days but also cloudy days, and because we are so near the Atlantic Ocean we have rain regularly. The best thing to do is prepare yourself for all types of weather. When packing, be sure to include some warm clothes, a jacket and a raincoat (and maybe a small umbrella) as well as your summer t-shirts and light clothes.

If you get sick and need medical attention, the Student Welfare Officer at The Language Place or your host person will take you to the doctor. If you are from the EU, and have an EHIC card or an E111 form, EU Regulation 1408/71 says that holders of the European Health Insurance Card, E111 or equivalent, during a temporary stay in Ireland can have access to doctors and services in a public hospital free of charge. But if you don’t have this card, you will have to pay for medical treatment here, so make sure you get one before you come. The cost of medicine is higher in Ireland than in other countries. It usually costs around €50 to visit a local doctor and €100 for emergencies. If you have an illness for which you have to take regular medication, it is a good idea to make sure you bring enough of your medication with you for the duration of your stay here. If you get really sick and have to return home without completing your course, The Language Place will give you a partial refund for the proportional cost of activities, excursions and accommodation or a credit note for a course at a later date (please see terms and conditions in the Application Form).

Can I stay one or more extra nights with my host/host family?

What’s the weather like in Ireland in July/August? What clothes should I bring?

What happens if I get sick?

Do I have to attend all the activities and excursions?

What will I do on my Intensive English course?

Will I have enough free time to relax and/or do what I want?

We recommend that all students take out a good travel insurance policy in your own country to have adequate insurance against personal injury, theft or loss of belongings and personal injury while in Ireland. The Language Place cannot accept responsibility for personal injury, theft or loss of belongings.

Everything is included in the Adult Total Immersion course; classes, activities, excursions and entrance fees. In addition, if you stay with a host/host family, all your food and meals (except drinks outside the house) are included in the cost. So it is not necessary to bring a lot of money with you. We suggest you bring enough money to go out at night to have a drink or two if you want.

If you decide to stay in an apartment or a house, you will have to buy your own food or eat out. You should also bear in mind that food in Ireland is generally more expensive than in Europe.

If you are between 17 and 19 years old you are a Young Adult. Young Adults can join an adult course but please note that if you are under 18 you are not legally permitted to drink alcohol in Ireland. In addition, many pubs have age restrictions of over 21s. For this reason, you will not be able to join in some evening or weekend activities which take place in pubs.

Yes. Students on all our Total Immersion programmes should be prepared to speak in English all the time with their hosts, teachers and the other students on the programme. This is the best way to improve fluency in a short period of time.

Yes. We offer programmes for teenagers between 12 and 16 years of age in July and August. For information or to request a Teen Total Immersion brochure, please contact us at [email protected]
