Dear Patrons, Members and Friends of the JRA,The James Renwick Alliance’s biggest and most rewarding event of the year is Spring Craft Weekend. We very much hope you’ll be able to join us.
This year Clemmer Montague has been leading a committee of great volunteers in planning a thrilling weekend full of surprises, learning and excitement. The programs are based on the intriguing theme, Materialism: The Medium or the Message.
We are very proud to bestow upon our long-time members Deena and Jerry Kaplan our One-of- a-Kind Award for their unfailing support of JRA and the art and craft communities. In addition, we are so honored to welcome the 2014 Distinguished Educators: Dan Dailey, Peter Held, Glen Kaufman and Patti Warashina.
During the weekend, you can listen to prominent educators discuss the concept of materialism, enjoy a great dinner, and participate in the auctions at the Willard Hotel. Caucus members and Patrons will visit private collections. To top it off, all can enjoy brunch with our four educators at the St. Regis Hotel on Sunday. It is really quite a weekend.
The funds we acquire during Spring Craft Weekend contribute to the JRA’s mission of acqui- sitions, exhibitions support, and educational and fellowship programs for the Renwick Gallery. This invitation details the events for each day. Please choose what you would like to attend. We aim to make your attendance at SCW 2014 most memorable.

The lively panel discussion will revolve around the meaning and usefulness of the word “materialism,” the theme of Spring Craft Weekend, to describe the craft art movement which began in the 1950s. Dan Dailey proposes Materialism as the name for the movement, giving a new definition to describe the “philosophy of artists who have passionately focused their work on specific materials and devoted their life’s work to a single medium.”

The James Renwick Alliance and the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery deeply appreciate the dedicated JRA members whose diligent efforts create a fairy-tale weekend to raise funds to support the mission. It takes a lot of people to pull off an event with all the complexities of Spring Craft Weekend, and we are grateful for their contributions of time and effort.

spring craft weekend patrons as of February 7, 2014
welcome patronsPatrons of Spring Craft Weekend are the backbone of the fund- raising efforts for this marvelous weekend. Dedicated supporters, they make very generous dona-tions to support the James Ren-wick Alliance mission to recognize the achievements of America’s craft artists.
Patrons may attend SCW events without charge, and Patron dona-tions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law, less the fair mar-ket value of all event admissions. A very special note of appreciation for all Patrons this year is an invi-tation to a reception at the home of Deena and Jerry Kaplan on Thursday, March 27.
