I was part of the setup of the Club and have been on friendly terms withthese gentlemen for many years, and for myself it truly was an honour for me tohave the pleasant job of making these announcements.

Our 19th

Annual Run takes place in The Burren in CountyClare, a place I know well. Our heartfelt thanks to CarolineCuddy for voluntarily taking on the task of organising thisyear’s event. I have been promoting the idea that we shoulddress for the occasion; will we give it a go for this year – if atlease for a bit of fun?

2008 is shaping up to be another active year for our Club. The celebration of 100 years of The Model T Ford is takingplace worldwide. Here in Ireland we hope to assemble 100cars at the annual Steam Rally in Stradbally in County Laois over the AugustBank holiday week end. SirI went to see Jim Twohig. Jim is 87. He was delighted to become an HonoraryMember of The Irish Model T Ford Club. He said it was a great honour, he ismost thankful; he will frame it and hang it up.Rena insisted on making the tea for me. We had a wonderful conversation.Rena told me that about 10 years ago I came in one evening they had justfinished their tea and she had a tiny piece ofham left over for the cat. Anyway she made asandwich for me, she cut up the piece of ham tospread it out a bit and then I asked for salt shewas mortified, to this day she was waiting to tellme she was sorry for not having more ham inthe house for my unexpected visit. They don't make people like that anymore. Jimand Rena will celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary in September. I wish themwell and have no doubt they will make the 100.TimCrowley - President12

SirI met John Boland about 19 years ago when I was looking for a Model T; longstory short a deal was done. John told me he would show me how to drive it.The night I collected the car John was in bed with the flu so I got no instruction.Later on I was trying to get it going, one lead from the coil box had no insulator, and I used a biro which is still doing the job 18 years later. It took me a while to

find out there was a neutral on the left hand pedal, JimTwohig told me that in an emergency to press any 2pedals. John rang me up and asked if I would like to starta Model T club. We met in New Ross and that was thebeginning of the Irish Model T Club. I became firstSecretary, and after serving the Club for 18 years Ibecame President. It has been great fun. John was avery strong supporter all the way. We travelled far andwide. In all those years John never missed a meeting, when we had no pot to piss in John got money from Fords.I am delighted to be able to make John an Honorarymember during my watch.John I have no doubt you will make the 100.

Honorary Members

T enthusiasts all over the world are celebrating in 2008 the 100th anniversary ofthe Model T Ford. To mark this unique occasion, The Irish Model T Ford Clubdecided to bestow on two of our long serving members, James Twohig and JohnBoland the title of Honorary Member. Our President, Tim Crowley, in writing tothe participants, said that it is our members' way of recording their appreciation oftheir founding initiative; support and contribution over many years and on behalfof the membership extend best wishes.

Custom Alert

All car enthusiasts especially of the veteran type should be interested in a recentdecision by the London Tribunal Centre concerning the tariff classification forduty purposes of a 1955 Ford Zephyr Mark 1 convertible motor car. Theappellant in the case had appealed against the decision by the Commissioners ofHM Revenue & Customs to classify the motor car under the heading 8703 whichcovers motor vehicles and attracts 10% import custom duty instead of heading9705 which covers collector’s pieces and attracts a 0% import duty. The appealwas held in two stages, in June 2006 and in December, 2007 respectively. TheCommissioners contended that, according to case law, an article properlyclassified under heading 9705 must satisfy certain criteria, i.e. it must be (a) acollector’s piece and (b) of historical or cultural interest. They were satisfied thatthe motor car was of historical or cultural interest. The conditions set out for a motor vehicle to qualify as a collector’s piece weredetermined as a result of the decision in the European Court of Justice (Case No.C200-84) which is known as the Daiber Case. The conditions include that avehicle must be relatively rare, not normally used for its original purpose, nottraded on the ordinary market and might fetch a high price. When the case was

The Irish T. Times Spring 2008

Page 7

reopened in December, 2007 evidence was given by a motor vehicle consultantto the effect that the scrap metal value of the car was £75 and the approximatevalue as a source of spare parts was £2,500. Taking into consideration that thevalue of the car including VAT amounted to £11,000, the Tribunal then decidedthat the value of the car was indeed out of all proportion to the value of itsintrinsic materials. The Tribunal therefore accepted that all the conditions for theclassification of the motor car as a collector’s piece for customs duty purposeunder heading 9705 were satisfied and the appeal succeeded.

Car enthusiasts who have either already imported cars that can be considered ascollector’s pieces or who might be considering importing classic or veteran carsinto Ireland should consider the outcome of this case. The RevenueCommissioners in Ireland can sometimes use unreasonable and arbitrarymethods of arriving at a value for customs purposes and they may not always becorrect in their interpretation of the tariff classification of imported goods. Thisrecent decision highlights the benefits of sometimes changeling the Revenue’sinterpretation.

Model T Ford Car Tractor conversion

A patent application covering an improved plough design was filed by Fergusonin September, 1917. Two months later, Harry Ferguson gave the first of a seriesof demonstrations to show his new plough in action. It was called the Belfastplough and was made in his garage and it included some basic ideas which wereto remain an essential part of his approach to tractor and machinery design. One important feature was the way the plough was hitched to a point underneaththe tractor and the head of the rear axle so thathard soil conditions produced a downward pullon the tractor to aid traction. The plough designhad been simplified to reduce the number ofparts and to minimise the weight and it wasdesigned for the Eros tractor, a light weightadapted Form Model T car by means of a conversion kit made by the Staudecompany of St. Paul, Minnesota. The Eros kit was one of several makesdesigned to give some of the millions of aging T’s new lease of life on the land asa low cost alternative to a tractor. The cheapness and light weight of the ModelT conversion were features which would have appealed to Harry Ferguson muchmore than the heavy outdated design of the overtime tractor.Supplied by John O’Shaughnessy Askeaton 086 3867229

Motor Mouth – Jay Leno

Readers might be interested to know that this well known writer published anarticle in the Sunday Times on the 2

ndMarch, 2008 under the

heading “My 83 year old Model Babe”. He goes onto say that“the car I have been driving to work in every day this pastweek is a 1925 Ford Model T. It just got me thinking abouthow much we like our hybrids these days. Is it not moreenvironmentally friendly to take an old car, something like aModel T, clean it up a bit and drive it around? Is that not asmaller carbon footprint than building cars in Japan and freighting them acrossthe ocean? It seems that this is the ultimate in recycling. They built 16,000,000 Model T’s and there are still 1,000,000 of them out there.I have been commuting with one every day and it is hilarious. First of all theroads in LA are terrible but I just skip over potholes the way they did in 1925. Idon’t go on the motorway with it but I take side streets and my top speed is about45 miles per hour. People wave and are very friendly. They look at you as ifyou are doing something to help the environment. “Oh, he is not buying somebig shiny new car that weighs 3 tons”.I think driving an old car for your entire life, or a long part of your life, is probablymore environmentally friendly than getting a new hybrid every three or four years.Obviously this is not practical for everybody but I have to say driving a Model Taround LA with the exception of getting broad sided by a 3ton SUV, is actuallyquite enjoyable. The weather is pleasant. It gets at least 25 miles to the gallon. It is literally bullet proof and you can go over any type of road surface. Whencommuting in the morning the traffic is bumper to bumper anyway. Nobody isgoing much over 30 or 40 miles per hour. I am in my 83 year old car that wasbuilt once. The paint that is on it has been on it for almost 55 years, it lookspresentable, it gets good mileage and I am not constantly depleting the earth’sresources. It was built once, has a shelf life of forever.I think you can offset any higher carbon emission from an old car.Obviously I know there are tremendous flaws in this argument but I am justsaying it’s something to think about”.

We have chosen Stradbally as being the ideal location andhave accepted an invitation from the Committee to participate with them. Weexpect to have a secure area cordoned off for Model T’s to mount our exhibition. We plan to line the cars up in a square facing outwards so that visitors will beable to see and admire our cars. Given that it is the 100

thAnniversary of the

Model T Ford, we hope to have on display 100 vehicles and we call upon ourmembers to signify their willingness to make an effort to try and achieve this aim.John Hendy has kindly offered us storage facilities pre and post the event. Beaulieu Auto Jumble 2008

Year 2008 sees the 100th

Anniversary of the start of production of the Model TFord. Many Irish people with an interest in old cars visit Beaulieu each year. Our Club is on friendly terms with the Model T Registrar of Great Britain. BothClubs are hosting separate stands side by side to celebrate and promote theModel T Ford. Our Club proposes to have present on our own stand an Irishassembled touring car for all to see. Our U.K. colleagues propose to have aManchester made car present also.

The Irish T. Times Spring 2008

Page 15

This facility should be of benefit to our members who could use our stand as ameeting point for the two day event. We hope this will be of interest to allvisitors and should assist in helping those interested in understanding the caritself and also the historical links that the Ford Motor Company has with Ireland.Whilst it is known that Henry Ford’s father, William Ford, emigrated from CountyCork in the mid-1800, it is not appreciated that his mother came from Fair Lane inCork City. Ireland holds a special place in the Ford family and Company and thefirst factory outside of North America was positioned at Marina in Cork for theproduction of the Fordson Tractor for worldwide distribution.
