A Word from Kyle Pfeifer - President of Epsilon Mu

Brothers of Epsilon Mu, As my term as President is coming to an end I wanted to share a few thoughts with you before I am done. I want you all to know it has been a privilege to be the president of this chapter. I ran for President in December with a good understanding of what was asked of me and I feel like I have contributed to returning our chapter to prominence. We, as a chapter, have poured our hearts and souls turning Epsilon Mu around and we are still working hard at it. I hope that everyone that is apart of Epsilon Mu is proud of what we have accomplished. I personally want to thank everyone that has helped our chapter get to where is it today and that we couldn’t have done it without you all. My focus, now that we have completed fall recruitment, will be to focus mainly on our ac-creditation report due on November 1, 2008. We have worked very hard to improve our chap-ter and I believe it will show on this report. With the help of my Executive Council and our advis-ing team, I am confi dent we will be in contention for some major awards this year. I currently have a date set with our advising team to look over a rough draft of the report and to suggest any improvements. The date of this meeting will be on Saturday October 18, 2008 at National Headquarters. If any of you of would like to attend, I would be pleased to work with you. Being a Delt is something that means a lot to me and something I will never take for granted. It has been challenging at times, but it’s an amazing experience that I would never change. Our four fundamental principles have been the cornerstone for the past four years and will continue to be for the rest of my life. I hope that some day, I will be able to give back to this brotherhood what it has given me. TCFP, Kyle PfeiferEpsilon Mu [email protected](317) 340-1734

Chapter Succeeds Following Spring Semester

The men of Epsilon Mu have prevailed over trying times this last year, but the future looks very bright. After consecutive semesters of below average academic expectations, the current members took the initiative by achieving a 2.86 GPA during the spring smeester. We are now ranked second on campus academically, well above the all men’s and all fraternity average. An extremely solid core group of Brothers lead the Chapter into the fall 2008 semester. These men, paired with the support of Alumni and a strong recruitment plan, gives the Delta Tau Delta slogan, “Our past is bright, our future is brilliant” new meaning.

A Different Approach to Rush For Fall 2008 Semester

This chapter has dedicated itself to growing as the strongest and most elite fraternity this campus has seen. With strong alumni support, we have developed a Value-Based Selection Process that allows us to strategically recruit the best men on Ball State’s campus. Before rush started, the chapter took time out of our Saturday morning to work with alumni Brett Benson on a dynamic recruitment plan. We hit Ball State’s campus and were able to meet and greet over one hundred freshman men. We took our time to talk with these men and explain to them the opportunities and possibilities of joining our successful organization. We discussed everything we have to offer. We successfully handed out twenty – one bids, prior to rush week, to men who were more than qualifi ed to join our Fraternity. Please take a moment to review the process on that we have developed on page four.

A Word from Brett Benson - Director of Alumni Affairs

When I think about my Delt experience at Ball State, I remember a lot of hard work and the most fun I can remember in my life. After spending the past ten years recruiting for sev-eral industries in Chicago, I am the biggest advocate of networking. I made a living from a skill I learned by recruiting candidates into Delta Tau Delta. After moving back to Indianapolis I took a corporate position. While there, I noticed I was missing the very thing I loved about recruit-ing: helping people climb their personal mountain. That led me back to our Fraternity and the position of Director of Alumni Affairs.

Upon starting my new position I found myself going through the Ritual and really listen-ing to the Oath that we all made. I realized that those words were more than just words on a page or a way to get a badge. They had become a part of who I am.

I found that Truth, Courage, Faith, and Power were not just ideals to live by in college, but words which grow character. Those four words have built a sense of pride inside of me, because character creates action...every day. Being shown the formula to living a life of excel-lence is a premium gift and can never be repaid.

I welcome all of you to contact me and network with your brothers by joining www.delt-incircle.com. We were given the opportunity to be great by the alumni that served us in advi-sory roles or who donated to Delta Tau Delta. One thing is sure; these current and future active brothers will need our help. I challenge you to reconnect with your brothers, visit the house this year, share your best stories, count how many times you laugh till you cry remembering them, and give back to the home that helped you become the success you are today.

Always your brother,

Chapter Highlights of the 2008 Spring Semester

The spring semester brought not only improved academic performance, but also a wide array of successful philanthropic events that have shined a positive light on the chapter. Here are some examples:

First Ever Greek Day Members of several different fraternities and sororities could be found on the front lawn of the Shelter during this fi rst ever annual event. Volleyball, cornhole (beanbag toss) tournaments, and a live DJ provided entertainment for the guests. The entree fees from the tournaments, as well a large donation from the Chapter, raised $2,000 for the Chi Omega Make a Wish Founda-tion. The women of Chi Omega were responsible for raising a large portion of the sponsors and it was voted that the proceeds would go to a charity of their choice. The volleyball and cornhole tournament ended with the home team, Delt Thunder, taking fi rst place in both.

Gold Canyon Candle FundraiserIn order to insure Greek Day as a success and raise some funds for Shelter improvements, the brothers took it upon themselves to go out and raise money by selling Gold Canyon can-dles. Internal Vice President Matt Jaenicke’s mother provided the connection for the candles. $1027 was raised, some of which went to a charity and the rest to a wireless printer for the Shelter. It was a great tool of which we can make great use in the future.

Easter Egg HuntStrengthening the community is essential to our vitality and the brothers in the house take this phrase in our mission and values very seriously. Children from the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie came to the Shelter and took part in a massive Easter egg hunt that involved roughly 42 children. The Brothers hid hundreds of eggs fi lled with candy throughout the front yard and watched as the kids raced to pick them up. A few of the eggs were spray-painted gold, which entitled their fi nder to a special prize. The day was an overwhelming success for the house and the children. Here is the story as it ran in the Ball State Daily News the following day:

More than 200 attend UPB, Delta Tau Delta fraternity events

Muncie residents had two opportunities to take their children on an Easter egg hunt Thursday on Ball State University’s campus.

Hundreds of people showed up for Delta Tau Delta’s annual Easter egg hunt for the Boys & Girls Club of Muncie and the University Program Board’s Eggstravaganza.

Delta Tau Delta President Kyle Pfeifer said about 45 children and 36 adults from the Boys & Girls Club attended the event. Fraternity members hid Easter eggs fi lled with candy in their front yard for the children to fi nd. They also had door prizes for those who found special eggs, he said.

“It was a good turn out,” he said. “The kids had a lot of fun. It was a good time. Any-thing you can give back to Muncie is a good thing to me.”

Nick Hewitt, a UPB director, said more than 200 children and their parents went to the soggy Quad for Eggstravaganza. UPB provided free popcorn, cotton candy and bottled water to those in attendance. Children could have their faces painted, com-pete in sack races and compete in coloring contests. Egg spoon races and ring and bean bag tosses were other games children could play. Every child received candy and novelty prizes.

They also could participate in Easter egg hunts and have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny, Hewitt said. The event was free and open to the public.

“It was defi nitely a success,” he said. “Almost every UPB member was here. ... We got lucky with the weather. ... All the kids had fun.”

Continued Success Requires Effective Risk ManagementA Letter from Epsilon Mu’s Risk Manager

Dear Brothers,

For Epsilon Mu to continue its climb toward another Hugh Shields award, following

the rules and sanctions handed down by the Delta Tau Delta national fraternity, as well

as Ball State University, has been a necessity. One of the sanctions that remains in ef-

fect for another semester is the prohibition of alcohol on Delta Tau Delta property. I can-

not stress the importance of this enough. Although we have improved as a chapter over

the last year, we are still under close supervision. I regret to inform you that Ball State

has denied our request for an alcohol exemption during homecoming weekend. There-

fore no alcohol will be permitted before or after the game on our property. We hope this

does not affect your decision to come back to the Shelter and support your alma mater.

”Over the summer I interned at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. I went out on stories everyday and shadowed the reporters. Some of my favorite memories are meeting Peyton Manning, Gover-nor Mitch Daniels, and the Jonas Brothers! I really enjoy being the Delta Tau Delta Sweetheart. These are some of the best men on campus and it’s an honor being a part of their chapter.”

Intramural Sports for Fall 2008 Semester

All Delta Tau Delta sporting teams compete in Fraternity League, Individual Events, and Team Tournaments. Points are received for competing as well as how well the individual or team places. The Ball State recreation offi ce tallies these points between all Fraternities on campus and at the end of the semester they declare a Grand Champion. Due to a lack of funds, we were restricted to competing in only a few sports over the last few years. This Fall we will be competing in every

single intramural sport. We would like to thank Wade Baertschi’s mother, Becky Kevoian, for donating funds that covered the entire fall intramural schedule. Below is a complete list of the

athletes competing for the Fall 2008 Fraternity All Sports Title.
