In 1256 King Alfonso X granted Seville the privilege of raising a school to foster the studies of latin and arabic languages.

In 1502, king Ferdinand and queen Isabella, best known as the Catholic, provided the city hall with a Real Cédula so Seville could establish a Estudio General with «Seats for theology, laws,medicine and other liberal arts.”

But the University as such would become a reality 3 years later when Archdeacon Maese Rodrigo Fernández de Santaella who had founded the School of Blessed Mary of Jesus (Colegio de Santa María de Jesús) obtained In 1505 a papal bull from Pope Julius II
