I like to express my deepest sympathy with the Chinese people and especially with the families where family members lost their life, was wounded or are missing after the earthquake!
The number of the causalities is shocking and heart breaking, and leaves me speechless!
However, despite the tragedy, I am impressed by the way the Chinese people has handled the disaster!

The recent disasters in China and Myanmar, which may have as many as 200 000 causalities, and left millions of people homeless and in need of help, have reminded again the whole world of the vulnerability for part of the world population concerning natural disasters!
These catastrophes have reminded us of the need for proper risk assessment and emergency and disaster management planning and the importance of this work to reduce the consequences!
These events have also put the focus on the need for always open global communication to be prepared!

Risk Assessment is a very valuable tool in both macro as well as micro emergency risk considerationsBoth qualitative and quantitative assessments are valuable, but quantitative analysis are preferableStatistical background data is therefore a mustPresentation of the Risk Assessment results are important for bringing forward the message to the decision makersCost consequences or gains are important messages to sell the resultsRisk assessments is today tools very integrated in the Norwegian society in both industry and government decisions

This workshop was run as a brainstorming event with a group of 22 experts from 14 different European countries. The objective of the workshop was to outline future research or innovation actions with clear European added value. The general theme was the management of urban and peri-urban areas with a particular focus on ICT tools enabling cities to reduce their environmental footprint and achieve sustainable development objectives
