Bringing Arts Education Where It Is Needed Most In The Classroom “It takes a few weeks to digest the unusual classroom of a jail and teens who are also inmates. Even though I have accepted the reality of these young peoples’ circumstances, there are moments where the contradiction of it all still slaps me in the face. Sometimes though, it’s not a slap, but more like a kiss... Right before the holidays, I decided to take a break from our normal Restorative Justice curriculum to make Appreciation Cards with the students. In the girls’ unit on this particular Sunday, only a handful of the young women were allowed out of their cells for art class. This meant that there had been a fight, an altercation or something else disruptive which caused the guards to lockdown most of the girls. It also meant, that as a result, I could be facing bad attitudes and resistance to my “let’s appreciate somebody!” project. But, surprisingly the girls were in good spirits. They even took the assignment and made it their own. Three of the four girls decided to each make cards for another inmate who would be celebrating her 15th birthday in a few days, but was locked up in her room at the time. It was just another example of how art gives these girls a chance to express when their freedom is limited. Art allows them to show love when they are supposed to show that they are tough. And when I came back to the unit after the holiday break, the young lady who received the cards beamed with a bright smile, still grateful for her gifts from the others.” Jocelyn M. Bringing Arts Education Where It Is Needed Most

In The Classroom“It takes a few weeks to digest the unusual classroom of a jail and teens who are also inmates.

And when I came back to the unit after the holiday break, the young lady who received the cards beamed with a bright smile, still grateful for her gifts from the others.”
