TRENTON — Chrysler Group LLC plans to invest $114 million in equipment and create

268 new jobs at the Trenton Engine Complex on Van Horn Road. The investment, an-

nounced Wednesday, includes using 400,000 square feet of the 2-million-square-foot

building to produce parts for the engines made at its sister plant, Trenton South, which

is next door. The old plant had stopped operations in May. ―As Chrysler Group moves

to replace seven V-6 engines with the new Pentastar V-6, it has become necessary to

add capacity on core components in order to meet the production demands of this new

engine,‖ Brian Harlow, vice president and head of powertrain manufacturing, said in a

press release. ―This investment has also given Trenton North, which has been building

engines for nearly 60 years, a new lease on life.‖ At a special meeting Monday, the City

Council unanimously approved a tax abatement request to support Chrysler’s use of the

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Presto Products Company, a manufac-

turer of plastic film and bags will invest $6 million to expand its operation in Halifax

County. The company will add five new manufacturing lines, creating 22 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, ―Presto’s investment

and expansion of five manufacturing lines will allow for increased capacity, serving

more customers from its facility in Halifax County. This project will not only increase

the company’s competitiveness in its market, but also will help secure the future of the

AKG of American, which makes heat exchanges and cooling solutions, said Thursday

that it will expand its plant in North Carolina’s Orange County, creating more than 75

jobs and investing more than $3 million over the next three years. Gov. Beverly Perdue

said Thursday that AKG of America received a $100,000 grant from the One North

Carolina fund for the expansion. The company plans to add 42,000 square feet to its

manufacturing plant in Mebane, where it also has its North American headquarters

and sales office. The average annual salary will be almost $43,000, plus benefits. The

1,100 jobs for OH

The battered Mansfield-area economy, hurt by declines in the auto industry, is poised

to gain more than 1,000 jobs that also would help meet the growing demand for solar

energy. The U.S. Department of Energy said yesterday it is offering a $275 million loan

guarantee to Calisolar Inc. to locate a solar silicon plant in Ontario, just west of Mans-

field in Richland County. Calisolar, a California-based company that supports the alter-

native-energy industry, plans to invest $752 million to create a manufacturing opera-

tion that would include a former General Motors stamping plant and new construction.

Plans call for creating nearly 1,100 permanent jobs and up to 1,000 construction jobs.

The estimated annual payroll would be $37 million, representing an average base wage

1,300 Jobs for Chicago

United Airlines’ merger with Continental Airlines is bringing 1,300 additional workers

to Chicago by the end of 2012. Jeff Smisek, CEO of Chicago-based United Continental

Holdings Inc., parent company of the carriers, said most of the jobs are being trans-

ferred from cities around the country. The Friday announcement comes as United Con-

tinental Holdings Inc. works to combine the two airlines and workforces. The world’s

largest carrier, formed when United and Continental merged in October, seeks to have

a single operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration by the end of

100 Jobs for Ireland

Swedish technology and telecoms firm Ericsson is to create 100 software engineering

jobs at its facility in Athlone, Co Westmeath. The jobs have been added to Ericsson’s

presence in the town in order to boost the company’s research and development activi-

ties. Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation Richard Bruton described Ericsson’s

strengthening of its RD activities in Ireland as ―a great vote of confidence‖ in Govern-

2,000 Jobs for the UK

TYNESIDE has won hundreds of new jobs – and it’s all thanks to our manufacturing

skills. The Government announced a group led by Siemens had beaten Derby-based

Bombardier Transportation’s consortium to be preferred bidder for the contract for

1,200 new carriages on the Thameslink route in South East England. Siemens says up

to 2,000 new jobs will be created with around 600 highly skilled roles involved in mak-

ing train components – including up to 300 at one of its plants in Hebburn, South

Tyneside. The majority of jobs are expected to start in 2013 with the first new carriages

arriving in 2015. Existing Thameslink carriages will be used to relieve rail overcrowd-

80 Jobs for Scotland

More than 80 new jobs have been promised at the Edinburgh Centre on Climate

Change following a £1.6m injection from the Scottish government. Plans are in place to

build a new home for the centre at Edinburgh University. Research into climate change

and the development of low-carbon products and services will be carried out at the new

base, due to open in 2013. The Scottish government’s capital investment secretary Alex
