Summer time is one of my most favorite times in the church year. The children are out of school and our program gets cranked with wonderful opportunities like our Annual Community Block party and Vacation Bible School...we take the kids to the beach at Paradise Cove and

celebrate how God has allowed us to reach out at community events like “Cruise Night” in the city of Glendale. The whole experience is one that I have always responded to in a very favorable manner. This particular summer, I look forward to savoring the daylights out of the experience because I’ll be very aware that this will be my last time as a Senior Pastor to experience these events with you. I announced to the congregation last Sunday that I will retire from the full time parish ministry at the end of the current church year (September 30, 2013). It is a decision that I have thought and prayed about for some time. When is the right time to move from something you love and have done for forty years? As near as I can understand, it is when the God who calls us to anything calls us a new place of learning, growing and witnessing. As best I can discern, forty years after being ordained one warm August night where I promised to follow the Lord’s leading, I am being gently nudged toward a new phase of living for Him. I also sense this is a time God has prepared for the church to transition to a younger pastor to lead in the coming years. As I looked ahead at the new church year coming in October, I began to realize that though my love for ministry and the church has never been stronger, my physical strength and energy are not what they used to be. I sense that God is leading me to continue serving in a different way than the rigors of the pastorate. So, with great trust and confidence in our Heavenly Father, I’m looking forward to whatever ways God will use my availability. In one sense, there is no retirement from ministry...just a re-tooling of God’s gifts to be used in new ways. Sharon, who has been with me each step of the journey from putting me through Seminary to serving alongside me in each congregation senses the leading of the Spirit in this decision as well. So, we plan on finding ways for God to utilize our gifts together in our senior years. I am excited and feel peace in all of these and look with deep gratitude at how God has used us in each place of service. We plan on continuing to reside in Glendale. It is our home now and we look forward to being around and greatly value your friendship now and in the future.

THANKS FOR ALL YOU ARE IN OUR LIVES AND IN THIS COMMUNITY TO SHARE THE GOSPEL.

Shares about Atherton Home, one of our

mission partners during...

FBCG’s JUNE 19th POTLUCK

Atherton Baptist Homes and their wonderful ministry

will be spotlighted at our next Potluck on Wednesday June 19th.

Rev. Craig Statton, Director of Planned Giving and Church

Relations will be giving the presentation.

PASTOR MATT’S MEDITATIONS Some of you might have noticed already, but our potlucks have taken on a new flavor!

First, we’ve added a special theme to each night. Last month our theme was “Mexican Fiesta”, which

brought forth delicious Mexican dishes and even Mariachi music (special thanks to the Zenners). This

month our theme is “Comfort Foods”, which will take us back to the good ol’ fashion meals our mothers

used to make.

Second, we’ve added to each night what I like to call, “Mission Sessions”. With the exception of ministry

reviews and other special circumstances, every monthly potluck will host a guest speaker from one of

our many missions partnerships. In May, we had the privilege of hearing from Aaron and Stephanie

Glenn, Cooperative Baptist missionaries who work tirelessly to help rescue and empower victims of slave trafficking in LA. This month, we hear from our friends at Atherton Baptist Homes, a Christian

retirement community. This concept of hosting missions partners every month popped into my head

after this year’s MissionsFEST. Why should we have to wait a whole year until we get to see our

partners again? These “Mission Sessions” afford us the opportunity to build deeper relationships with

our missions partners so that when MissionsFEST arrives, we truly can celebrate with them because we already know who they are and what they are doing for God’s kingdom.

These wonderful additions will bring even more joy and fellowship to our potluck

experiences. You will be counting down the days to the next potluck, excited not only

about a delicious meal, but also about hearing how the Spirit is on the move in our community and our world. And how we, as individuals and as a church, can support the

good work of the Holy Spirit.

Title: “If Christ is Truly Lord”: The Politics of Jesus

Date and Time: Starting July 1st from 7-8pm

Location: Adult Classroom

Description: In this six week class starting July 1st, we will together explore ways in which the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus matters, “politically,” to how each of us as disciples are to live our everyday lives, in ways that go well beyond who one votes for. As we focus each week on a different passage of scripture, the basic question that will orient our class will be, “If Jesus is Lord of all, what implications follow for us?” By the end of the course, we will hopefully have a deeper appreciation of C.S. Lewis’ description of Jesus (via a description of Aslan the Lion): “Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe! But he’s good.”

Bio: Ryan is from the tobacco roads of North Carolina, plays guitar, and loves teaching about, talking about, and fostering ways Christians can live faithfully and boldly in a post-modern and post-Christendom context. Ryan holds a B.A. in Religious Studies and Sociology from Elon University, an M.Div. from Wake Forest University School of Divinity, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Fuller Theological Seminary in Christian Ethics and Philosophical Theology. He is currently immersed, happily, in the work of the late baptist narrative theologian James Wm. McClendon, Jr., whose work he foists on anyone who will let him.

PASTOR CHARLES UPDIKE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Pastor Updike announced to the congregation his plans to enter retirement at the end of this church’s calendar year, which is September 30, 2013. Pastor

Updike will be working with the congregation between now and then to facilitate a 90 day transition plan following the Church’s Constitutional directives. We pray for Pastor and Mrs. Updike as well as for our church as we continue to grow in God’s love and
