There is a story about the ancient king of Macedon, Alexander the Great. As the tale is told, one day a beggar by the roadside asked for alms from Alexander as he passed by. The man was clearly destitute, and was quite bold and presumptuous even in asking anything from the powerful ruler. The Emperor had mercy up-on the man and threw him several gold coins. A cour-tier standing nearby was flabbergasted at his gener-osity and quickly commented, “Sir, copper coins would adequately meet a beggar’s need. Why give

him gold?” Alexander responded with the kind of conviction and cer-tainty that characterized his exploits: “Copper coins would suit the beg-gar’s need, but gold coins suit Alexander's giving.” Whether the story is apocryphal or not, we do not know…but we who follow Jesus Christ walk in the way of the King of kings. And as followers of the Almighty King, the question before us is, “What kind of giving suits us as God’s children?” Over the last five weeks we have set a course for the coming new church year. During the 2010-2011 Church Year, our emphasis will be upon becoming more fruitful as a congregation through practicing: Radical Hospitality…Passionate Worship…Intentional Faith Development…Risk Taking Mission & Service…and Extravagant Generosity. I’m asking each person who follows the Lord to commit to developing in these five practices. The whole church will grow as we individually give ourselves to these disciplines. How do you and I do that? I have put together a sheet of possibilities for you. Look them over when you receive them in the mail and then seek the Lord to see how you can grow stronger in the faith through committing to grow in one or all of the areas. If you do not see one listed that you feel led to pursue…pray and check other. Then list an activity that would enhance your fruitfulness as a Christian if you acted upon it. The last practice is Extravagant Generosity. It is the place where you can commit to grow in stewardship of all your resources. If you do not currently tithe…honor God through beginning to give. While the Old Testament and Jesus himself spoke of a tithe as presenting as a matter of your worship 10% of your income, there is no limit to what we can give as we devote ourselves to the Lord. Start somewhere, if not 10%...begin! Then as you learn the beauty of giving to the Lord, you will find the joy of giving more and more. We are as a community called to give. I hope this year, you will take a step toward extravagant generosity and give in love and joy to the Lord. I encourage you to write it down on the “Cultivating Fruitful Giving” card that you will be receiving in the mail. Your heart and love for God will lead you to an amount. Put it down and see how God works to make it possible for you to give that amount. You will develop better skills at management to make that commitment and you will grow spiritually as well. Please join me in sharing with the church an amount you are aiming to give. This pledge is a confidential matter. Between you and the Lord, pray and seek the amount…then trust God to transform you into that giver for His glory and kingdom. Keep looking up!

“A Weary World Rejoices” --O Holy Night

Perhaps the most recent example of a weary world rejoicing is the rescue of the 33 miners in Chile who were trapped underground for 69 days. It was a glorious sight for those of us watching on TV and I can only imagine how they and their families were feeling at the time. We do live in trying times, we have great struggles, we help carry others burdens to lighten the load only to make our load more difficult knowing that others will do the same for us. But we rejoice as Christians and Christmas is a time of year like no other to remind us of the reason for our perseverance and to raise our voices and rejoice together! This Christmas at FBCG we are focusing on the mission of God and our role in his mission. The theme of our missional CHRISTmas is a line from a Christmas hymn O Holy Night. Each Sunday of Advent we will highlight different areas of our Church mission. Get involved in sharing in the mission of God this Christmas. Sunday, November 28th we will write Christmas cards to soldiers who will be separated from their family during the holidays. Over the next few weeks we will be collecting Christmas cards for this project. If you have extra cards from previous years or if you would just like to get a box of cards, bring them to the church by November 14th so that we can begin preparing them. May our mission be God’s mission for us!

In the peace of Christ,

Pastor Caroline

PIANO DONATION GENERATES ANOTHER JOYFUL

THANK YOU!

An excerpt from Rev. Jini Kilgore Cockroft’s letter to Pastor

Charles Updike:

“We at HighWay Ministries want to thank you and FBC Glendale for the magnificent upright piano that you gave to us last week. We cleaned and polished the beautiful piano and prayed a prayer of dedication for it. On Sunday we inaugurated a new meth-od of presenting music (with projected words on the screen) to inspire greater participation. As the people sang, we all enjoyed the rich, full tone of our new piano. I even learned to play an old song in a new key for the occasion ("How Great Thou Art").

The piano comes just in time for the celebration of our second anniversary on Sunday, October 17, at 4:00 p.m. Please come if you can and consider this an invitation for First Baptist members who might want to attend.

Thank you so much. Your gift has brought a lot of joy to us and will greatly aid us in praising God. ”

PROUD TO BE A BAPTIST, WE WERE INVOLVED IN CHILE RESCUE MISSION

The Union of Evangelical Baptist Churches* of Chile dispatched one of its pastors, Marcelo Leiva, to the site where he has, for the past several weeks, had ongoing tele-phone conversation and prayer sessions with the trapped mineworkers. (For the full text of this article you can visit Baptist Word Alliance website: [email protected]). * First Baptist Church through American Baptist is a member of the Union of Evangelical Baptist Churches.
