Poor Saint Ansgar, Always Overshadowed by Saint Blaise

This Saturday, February 3, the Church has two optional memorials we can celebrate, the memorial for Saint Ansgar and the memorial for Saint Blaise. When we celebrate the saints throughout the year, these celebrations fall

into certain categories: solemnities, feasts, memorials, and optional memorials. In celebrating daily Mass, the priest must observe solemnities, feasts, and memorials, but optional memorials are a different story. The priest could choose to celebrate the saint of the day on an optional memorial, or he may choose just the regular Mass associated with the season or he can opt for doing a votive Mass for the Eucharist, the Cross or the Blessed Virgin Mary. So, optional memorials are just as they sound. Then, of course, there are days when more than one optional memorial could be assigned, with the priest picking one or the other to observe, or ignore them both.

So, we come to February 3, with two optional memorials assigned to that day: Saint Ansgar and Saint Blaise. Poor Ansgar does not have a ghost of a chance...; oops, I guess I should not say “ghost of a chance” since he is already dead. Poor Angsar does not have a prayer...; well, I should not say “not have a prayer” since he is a saint and does intercede for us. Let’s just say that Ansgar’s odds are slim to none that priest will opt for his memorial, unless of course the parish is named Saint Ansgar…and it is Catholic. It’s possible. I was born in Saint Ansgar’s Hospital in Moorhead. However, it is not a hospital anymore. Saint Blaise is the more fashionable memorial to celebrate on this day. It not just because he has a cooler name. (Let’s face it, if you had to name your kid either Ansgar or Blaise, Blaise would be picked every time, with the parent having in the back of one’s mind that with a name like Ansgar, he is already getting pummeled at recess.) Saint Blaise is opted for, especially around these parts, mainly because we do the blessing of the throats. Since I do not have a daily Mass on Saturday. I will do the Blessing of the Throats at St. Pius the day before at daily Mass after the homily; at St. Joe’s after the Saturday evening Mass and the Sunday

morning Mass.

I think poor old Ansgar needs to come up with a gimmick to get noticed around here, like the blessing of the Swedish meatballs.—TB

Catholic Services Appeal

Next weekend, we will again do the drive for the Catholic Services Appeal. As promised, since we made our goal, we will not show the video. Instead, I will preach about it on the weekend of February 4, and do the in pew commitment the following weekend.—TB

Thank you to Father Beeson, the help group that served the meal and to all who

helped with the funeral for Darleen Navara. Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated. The Navara Family

The KC's took in $753 for the pancake breakfast last Sunday. They will be giving half to Cannon Falls Food Shelf and half to Life Choice. Thank you to all who came.

Please pick up any dishes and cake pans that have been left after the past funerals. These items can be picked up in the kitchen. Thanks!

It’s that time of the year when the CCW collects it’s annual dues of $5. All women of the parish are members of the CCW. You can put your dues in the collection plate and have it marked for CCW. If you have questions on CCW and it’s programs and activities, please contact Pat Reinardy 263-3295.

Our sincere sympathy to Val Swentik in the loss of her mother Alba Murray, who passed away Tuesday, January 23. May she rest in peace.

Save the Date for the Grandparents Mass and Breakfast on February 11.

Cemetery Board Meeting Tuesday, January 30 at 7 pm. We will be discussing the addition of the columbarium, future expansion and any other items to be added to agenda, contact the parish office.

This Friday, Fr. Terry will have blessings of throats during Mass.

Adoration ends 3 pm this Friday.

Fish Fry Fridays start February 16th. This is your chance to something POSITIVE for Lent. Sign up sheets are posted in the back of the church.

1. Consider forming a team and committing to 3 Fridays in Lent. 4 teams are needed each Friday and each team testifies to having a good time working together. 2. Lots of help is needed each Friday night during the actual meal service. Please sign up and come when you can. 3. Homemade desserts are a big hit! Last year we served over 300 guests each Friday night (grand total 1876 meals), so lots of desserts are needed. See the sign up sheet for desserts.

The St. Pius Fish Fry is a huge service to the community, bringing in lots of people from all over the area and of all different faiths. Please sign up and join in the fun of serving others for lent. Thank you! Kathleen
